Spiritual Warfare

Jesus warned His disciples ahead of time so they would not stumble, quit, or be stopped when persecution came. John 16 shows that the hatred they would face would not only come from the openly wicked world, but also from religious people who believed they were serving God while rejecting Christ and harming His followers. The word "offended" means more than having hurt feelings; it means being hindered, caused to stumble, or stopped in the way. Real faith must be grounded in the words of Jesus so it can endure when trouble, rejection, slander, misunderstanding, or persecution comes. True believers will continue in Christ because they belong to Him, abide in Him, and cannot be separated from Him, even when the world and false religion oppose them. Believers must know what Jesus said, expect tribulation, refuse to quit over hurt or opposition, and let their light shine faithfully in a world that hates the truth.

We are shown through Jesus' conversation with the woman at the well that true worship must be centered on the Father and grounded in both spirit and truth. Many people are willing to talk about worship and religion while avoiding the truth about their sin, just as the woman shifted the conversation from her immoral life to the question of where to worship. Jesus did not allow her diversion to take control, but lovingly and wisely brought her face to face with the truth about herself, her false worship, and her need for God. Believers must not be deceived with this common modern type of worship that is built only on emotion, music, tradition, or religious excitement, and seek true worship that responds to the truth of God's Word through the witness of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus makes it as clear as possible that if we truly belong to Christ, the world will hate us because it hated Him first. John 15 makes it clear that there are only two spiritual camps: those who belong to Christ and those who belong to the world, and that a real disciple of Christ will not fit comfortably into a world that hates God, righteousness, and truth. Kindness, good works, and religious profession will not remove the reproach of Christ, because the world's hatred is ultimately against Jesus Himself and all who bear His name. The message calls us to openly confess Christ, live unashamed of His name, bear His reproach faithfully, and remember that whatever we suffer for Him now will be worth it when we stand before Him.

Christ's dealing with the woman at the well shows believers how to speak to souls wisely, personally, and with God at the center. From John 4 we see that true evangelism often happens in ordinary daily encounters, not in organized campaigns, and that believers should be ready to speak first, use everyday circumstances as a doorway, and turn the conversation toward God and eternal things. We can see how Jesus moved the woman from earthly thoughts about water and daily burdens to the deeper need of her soul, eventually bringing her sin into the light without a careless or confrontational approach. Believers need to be filled with the Word of God, alert to divine appointments, willing to speak a good word for the Lord, and careful to let God expose the heart so sinners may come face to face with Him, their sin, and the living water only Christ can give.

To love God supremely is the fundamental duty of man, as well as the foundation of true salvation, obedience, and Christian living. From John 15:9 and other scriptures, the Bible teaches that Christ loves His people as the Father loves Him, and He told us to "continue in his love." Real love is not merely emotion, religious zeal, loyalty, or words, but a life that gives itself to God in obedience and sacrifice. Love is not love unless it puts to death the selfish, self-centered heart, and esteems God and others more than ourselves. Do not be deceived by your emotional feelings toward God if you are living in disobedience to his Word. Love lives only in deeds, and the kind of love God commands from us is not feelings and emotion, but recognizing his greatness and goodness and laying down our lives for Him.

Using Jesus' encounter with the woman at the well in John 4, we learn that the right way to speak to someone about salvation is to begin with God Himself, as Jesus did when He turned the woman's attention away from herself and toward who He was. This man-centered gospel that presents Christ mainly as the answer to personal problems, while leaving self, sin, repentance, and the fear of God untouched is deceiving multitudes of people who will perish as a result. We must learn from Christ's example, put God first in witnessing, reject selfish forms of religion and worship, and remember that true salvation requires a sinner to be brought face to face with God, His authority, and His call to repentance.

Asking "why" is a profound part of our human reasoning and spiritual growth. There is a difference between sincerely seeking understanding and using the question to complain against or resist God's sovereignty. We see many examples where God in the Old Testament, and Jesus in the New Testament, asked "why?" When God asks "why?" we see that these questions are meant to expose unbelief, confront fear, and lead us toward repentance. God is never searching for information when He asks why, rather, God uses the question to reveal the condition of our hearts and call us to trust His perfect will. We must learn to rest in God's character and wisdom, accepting that some mysteries belong to Him alone while giving ourselves to the truths He has clearly revealed.

Music is a divine means of communication, created by God to speak directly to the heart, soul, and spirit in a way that words do not. Using Isaiah 12:2 and the truth that "the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song," the message teaches that music is woven into God's creation and even reflects biblical patterns of completion, new beginnings, and the hope of redemption. The sermon connects the musical scale's movement from beginning to completion with Christ as Alpha and Omega, showing that just as music longs for resolution, creation itself points beyond this present world to the new heaven, new earth, and the reign of Christ. It calls believers to see music as holy rather than common, to recognize its witness to God's truth, and to take comfort that the end of this present world is not despair, but the beginning of all things made new in Christ.

True repentance must deal not only with sins against God, but also with trespasses against other people. From Luke 17, Matthew 18, and other scriptures, we learn that trespasses involve the harm, offense, injury, or dishonor we bring upon others, and that they cannot simply be ignored while claiming to be right with God. Forgiveness, restitution, humility, and reconciliation are necessary parts of walking in love, because love works no ill to its neighbor and seeks peace wherever possible. We, as believers, need to examine whether we have wronged others, seek forgiveness where needed, forgive those who have trespassed against us, and live as new creatures who fear God, love others, and stop walking carelessly over the lives of people around them.

Music is not morally neutral, but has a powerful influence on the heart, mind, body, emotions, and character of those who hear it. According to Ephesians 5:10-11 believers must prove what is acceptable unto the Lord and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, especially in the music used for worship. Godly music should be marked by order, melody, harmony, reverence, and spiritual purpose, while fleshly and worldly music appeals to the body, stirs carnal passions, and will lead the church away from holiness and truth. It is critical, in this late hour, to exercise careful discernment, especially in the house of God, so that music offered in worship honors the Lord rather than conforming to the spirit and appetites of the world.
