  • Fire & Hemlock- Episode 6
This section is so strange because of Seb getting involved with Polly. I just do not know how to feel about this. The way that she's clearly not than enthusiastic is kind of sad but also hilarious?
I also want to know a lot more about Polly's grandmother, who seems to keep having some kind of inkling about things and I'm dying over it. Well-informed older women are some of my faves.
Thank you again to Patricia Bing-Grant for sponsoring this episode! I'm really enjoying this book a lot.

  • The Thing
Oh boy, it's the first scary movie of the Halloween season! I'm really excited to be kicking off with The Thing because it's one of those classics I had always intended to watch and never got around to, so thanks a million to David Waters for commissioning this episode.
This movie was NUTS and if you guys are interested in the uber-meta experience of watching me watch it, the Crowdcast link is here! https://www.crowdcast.io/e/spoil-me-the-thing
I really enjoyed this movie, especially the crazy creature-effects, which are just so fucking creepy and gross. There is so much great stuff to work with here, from the isolated setting to the barren landscape to the crew of wildly different personalities being forced to live together and trust each other...or not.

  • Six Of Crows, Chapters 10-15
Hey there, everyone! It's time for the next section on Six of Crows, which is covering 5 chapters because they were so much shorter this time around.
There's a lot going on here, and I just love the way the narrative skips around from one perspective to another. Also I know that it goes against everything that most of you know about me, but I love the character of Matthias. He's so single-minded, bullheaded, and frustrating! And yet there's something really endearing about him.
This is also the first time we get a really good look at how brutal Kaz can be. We've seen him be cunning and strong-willed and good at reading human nature, but this is the first time we've really seen him be cruel. He digs a dude's eye out of its socket. Like, for fuck's sake.
Anyway, this is a really great section and if you guys wanna read along you can pick up the book here! https://amzn.to/2DHiSkw

  • The Magicians' Guild, Episode 2- Chapters 5, 6, & 7
*rolls up sleeves* Alright, now we're cooking with gas!
I'm totally into the whole "we have to make a deal with the devil because they have awesome resources that nobody else seems to have access to" trope, and in this section we get a double-whammy of that because the Thieves are making deals both with Sonea and with the Guild. Oh, snap!
I appreciate that while Sonea may not have control over her powers yet, she's still quick about understanding a lot of the accidental magic she's done so far. She may not be able to reliably replicate it, but she's got an instinct for what she did the first time, and even understands what's happening when the Guild begins to search for her with their minds. I think they may have met their match.
If only the asshole she hit with a rock doesn't get his hands on her anytime soon.

  • Fire & Hemlock- Episode 5
Alright y'all, so this is a pretty rough one. Please don't let my mispronunciation of the word "abandonment" at the top of the episode undercut that.
Ivy is garbage and I want her to be covered in honey and dropped on top of a nest of ants. Reg is a coward and I want him to be stripped naked and paraded down High Street while people chuck handfuls of horse manure at him.
The ending section of this chapter gives us a little relief, only to almost immediately tear it away from us by creating a giant garbage-monster that chases Tom and Polly, and I resent it.
Thank you again to Patricia for commissioning this episode, and I will be seeing you all very soon with the next installment! If you'd like to buy the book, you may do so here: https://amzn.to/2xY8yhS

  • Iron Druid, Episode 5- Chapters 21-25
Hey everyone! I'm here with the final installment of Iron Druid, in which a certain freaky witch jumps into the mix and fucks shit up. Also, Atticus does some stuff.
This was a really fun book, and I'm a big fan of getting to see new ways of working magic, so there were a lot of little moments in this that were gratifying. From Laksha's sharing a body with Gran, to the way the werewolves communicate, to the fact that the earth can be sucked dry of power if you're selfish enough, there was a lot here that I found fascinating.
But I have to say, I don't know that sleeping with the goddess of death and battlefields is the reward I would be looking for. Good thing about that extra sword.
Thanks so much for commissioning this episode, Aaron, and I can't wait to get started on the next book!

  • Veronica Mars, S01E06- Return Of The Kane
Hey marshmallows! It's time for another installment of Veronica Mars in which I am unprepared for this show.
So this one is about 2 things: the campaign for Student Council President, and Logan. Let me just say that one of them turns out much better than the other, although both are heartbreaking in their very own special ways.
Thank you so much to Anonymous for sponsoring this episode, and I will see you all soon with a new Crowdcast!

  • Six Of Crows, Chapters 7, 8 & 9
Hi there, lovelies! Let's talk about a heist!
I'm a big fan of this book, both because it has done a nice job melding recognizable elements from our world with magic, and because it jumps from one POV to the other which I tend to be a sucker for. It's the Libra in me, what can I say.
In this trio of chapters, our motley band of miscreants all gathers in the same room for the first time to discuss their plans, their skills, and their target. We get a couple new POVs from Matthias and Jesper, and we find out a little more about how this world works. There's also something rather interesting about Kaz's aversion to skin-on-skin contact, which would explain why he wears gloves all the time, but I'm really curious what causes that revulsion to rise up in him. And also, Matthias is a bit of a big dumb ox but I rather like him.

Many thanks to Megan Tolentino for commissioning this new episode, and if you'd like to read along you can find the book here! https://amzn.to/2DvlAcW

  • So You Want To Be A Wizard- Episode 6
Y'all. I really wasn't ready for these final chapters. At all.
You're going to hear me break down and start crying, which is apparently going to be a running theme on Spoil Me! episodes, between how I reacted to this and to Fire & Hemlock. I really tried to get through reading some pertinent paragraphs without breaking down, but I couldn't manage it. Forgive the sniffling that persists afterward.
Really though, this book got hella deep hella fast, and there is really something to be said for a "YA" book that can manage the kind of nuance on display here. I was deeply moved in a way that I thought about a lot afterwards, and that's always a rewarding experience.
Thanks so much to Tristen and Devin for commissioning this book, and I hope that I can get started on the next one soon!
