“The Amashova – South Africa’s oldest classic cycle race – has become a flagship event for the province and it will do a lot to address seasonality and getting people who wouldn’t otherwise take a trip at this time of the year to come to the region,” said Phindile Makwakwa, Acting Chief Executive of Tourism KwaZulu-Natal (TKZN). This promises higher occupancies for hotels and other accommodation facilities during what would normally be a quiet time, enabling the province “to build a lucrative tourism sector that will continue to create sustainable jobs for the people of KZN”, continued Makwakwa. The event was recently placed in the famous Gran Fondo World Tour series – a world cycling series that takes place over eight months across four continents, with the Amashova leg the final race of the season. This has leveraged the event to international standing.

South Africa Para Surfing Team Heading to World Para Surf Championships! Surfing is my medicine. It remains a privilege to share para surfing and surf therapy with thousands of surfers with disabilities and volunteers across the Western Cape through a formalised Para Surfing Programme that started in 2016. There are a particular group of surfers who, no matter their (dis)ability, come down to the beach, adapt, excel and have earned a spot at the World Para Surf Championships in Pismo Beach, California 4-11 December this year. For the FIRST time, South Africa will be sending a team of 9 male and 5 female para surfers and 6 support team members to the World Para Surf Championships. Each year the team grows in numbers, (dis)ability classifications and skills.

The oldest, annual, classic road-cycling race in South Africa enjoys full road closure, and this year, it has returned to follow the famous ‘Comrades’ route from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Apart from the race being one of the oldest, it’s also one of the prettiest with picturesque and challenging routes that will see cyclists young and old, from beginners to advanced, participate in the 38km, 65km and 106km routes. The Amashova is regarded as a great family event that encourages people to ride for a cause with a special ‘Charity Batch’ that people can enter.

For Jacquin Hess, golf has become the pathway to success. At first, playing professionally was a boyhood dream, but now the 31-year-old travels the world, competes with the best and hopes to one day go up against some of the greatest players of his generation, including one of his sporting idols Tiger Woods. Jacquin, from Robertson in the Western Cape, learnt about golf from the pages of magazines like Compleat Golfer and Golf Digest, piquing his interest at an early age. His mother, a widow, worked at a golf estate on weekends when Jacquin was a boy. He was too young to be left home alone, so he reluctantly tagged along. It was here, whiling away the hours that Jacquin would come to read about the sport. Watching players on the course, he quickly became engrossed in the elegance of the game; one he’d find himself enjoying once he finally hit the green at age 15

The city is set to host Africa’s first continental Rubik's speed-cubing competition at GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World from October 7 – 9. The Rubik's Cube was invented in 1974 by Ernő Rubik, a Hungarian designer and architect who lived and worked in Budapest. It was originally created to teach mathematical formulas.

The World Cube Association (WCA) has chosen The Cubing Hub, founded by Donovan Pretorius in 2015 when he was in Grade 9, to host the competition.

Each African New year that comes, so comes the guests Cycling Races in the season to raise funds for various charities and raise Cyclist Safety awareness with our Check-A-Cyclist NPO. It’s been a crazy year kicking off with the Cycling Accident that led me off the bike for 8 weeks & losing/damaging very important equipment, alas – I’m back & stronger than before. This year I’m part of the “NJR Steel – SEEDS OF AFRICA” Cycling Team that will take on #RideJoburg (GP’s Highlight Cycling Race). My Purpose & Passion will always be to create a meaningful contribution to our society in this Sport I’m highly enthusiastic of.

Tania and Jacques De Kock have set off on a journey from Cape Town to Mpumalanga, running over 1000km along the way to raise funds for CANSA. De Kock have set themselves a mammoth task of running 1000km to raise funds for CANSA, they are documenting their journey online and call themselves the “Running Turtles”.

In 2016, Jacques’ father passed away from throat cancer. The couple decided they wanted to do something that would honour “Pa Billy”. They started running, and used their running to raise awareness and try to make a difference. They set their goal and set off, determined.
