South African powerlifting prodigy Nkosinathi Suhail Ntuli returned to Johannesburg on September 19 with a silver medal from the African Powerlifting Championships that were held in Morocco. Besides being crowned the second-strongest 93kg powerlifter on the continent, the medal is the culmination of a fairytale story that starts in Soweto with a little boy who had no idea he’d one day travel to represent his country in a power sport.

“I am naturally very excited - and a bit sore - but I am honoured to have represented my country in a sport I love, nevermind travel to another country to do what I love. About two months ago I didn’t think I would even be able to compete but then Zoom Fibre caught wind of my crowd-funding page, sponsored me, and the rest is history,” he says with a contagious smile.

Kevin Lerena hit former world title challenger Mariusz Wach with everything he had but had to settle for a wide 12-round unanimous decision in front of an adoring home crowd Saturday night at Emperor’s Palace. Judges John Shipanuka and Patrick Mukondiwa gave it a shutout at 120-108, with a third score of 118-110 from Tony Nyangiwe.

Wach, who towered over the much smaller Lerena, tried to get some distance with his jab in the first round, but as soon as Lerena snapped the Polish fighter’s head back with a left hook-right uppercut from his southpaw stance, the pattern was set.

Coetzee won silver and bronze medals at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo last year. She was born blind and competes in the T11 category which is the highest level of visual impairment for athletes.

Coetzee runs with a guide Claus Kempen who recently competed in the Comrades Marathon. Kempen was with Coetzee last year when she claimed silver in the women’s 1500m T11 and bronze in the marathon T12 in Tokyo.

I took up archery in 2000 first buying a bow for hunting only. I am still a keen hunter and have harvested 13 big game species with the bow and in total I have hunted more 150 big game animals. I took up target archery in 2010 first entering the ABO 3D competitions. In my first year shooting ABO I won 2 of the three triple crowns and the National championships with a record score of 408 that still stand today. In 2011 I started target archery focusing on World archery events I really like the precision of outdoor target archery coupled with the adrenaline of the elimination matches.
