Notre Dame football gained some ground in the national polls released Sunday. The Irish are up five spots to 13th this week on the strength of their 44-nothing beat down of Boston College at a cold and snowy Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday. The Irish can play spoiler this Saturday at now 5th ranked Southern Cal, which took care of UCLA Saturday. The Trojans have a legitimate shot at the College Football Playoff if they can beat the Irish and win the Pac-12 title game. The regular season finale in California could also affect Notre Dame’s bowl destination. Saturday’s coverage rolls at 2pm for a 7:30 kickoff on Sports Radio 960 WSBT.

Big Ten results from Saturday include Indiana’s upset double overtime win at Michigan State, 39-31. Purdue downed Northwestern in West Lafayette, 19-17. And 3rd ranked Michigan struggled to get past Illinois, 19-to-17. They take on 2nd ranked Ohio State in Columbus this Saturday at noon.

Perhaps the surprise team of the NFL weekend is the Detroit Lions, who have now won three straight after downing the Giants at the Meadowlands Sunday, 31-to-18. Now 4-and-6, the Lions play Thanksgiving Day at home against the Buffalo Bills.

In Atlanta, the Chicago Bears came up short once again, and await word on how badly quarterback Justin Fields’s shoulder in injured. Fields left the game late after taking a hit, and it could be Wednesday before we know much more. The Bears are 3-and-8 after Sunday’s 27-24 loss to the Falcons. They take on the Jets at the Meadowlands this Sunday at one on Z 94-3.

Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Siriani said after Sunday’s one point win over the Colts he really wanted this one after the Colts fired his friend and former boss Frank Reich. The Eagles managed a 17-to-16 win at Lucas Oil Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Colts have an extra day this week, as they await the Pittsburgh Steelers for the Monday night game a week from tonight on 96-1 the Ton.

Notre Dame women’s basketball handled business Sunday at Purcell Pavilion in a 95-to-60 won over Ball State. They have a couple of games in the Bahamas starting Thursday.

Hockey: the Blackhawks lost in Chicago to Pittsburgh, 5-to-3. Notre Dame split a pair at Ohio State, losing Friday 5-to-2, winning Saturday 1-nothing.
