If we are to rise above the chatter, tell our own story and know how to defend our way of life we have to be intentional and intellectual. TL Jones has blessed the hound hunting community for years with his short yet precise speculative writings that make us think and reflect on ourselves and upon that which we love; hunting with hounds.
TL Jones is at least a fourth generation bear hunter from the mountains of East Tennessee. His grandfather Berry Tarlton is a notable bear hunter and breeder of plott dogs. Berry resided in the Houston Valley near Greenville, TN and his strain of bear dogs is known as Houston Valley Plotts. That lineage has been passed down in the family and now TL and his son Ben carry on the family legacy.
TL joins Chris on this episode to have a deep discussion about hunting, the perception of hunting with hounds and how Houndsmen can improve the often mischaracterization of the Houndsman and hunting with hounds.

On The Journey we cross paths with people who put us on certain paths. In 2009 Heath started with a new line of hounds he wasn’t familiar with, Topper Again. Mike Leonard was the one that pointed him in that direction. Mike has been a horseman and houndsman for more than 5 decades. From bird dogs to hounds Mike has spent the majority of his life following game all over the West. Heath and Mike talk about a training method Mike told Heath about 14 years ago that Heath still uses today. They talk about what Mike thinks the differences between a good Lion dog and a good bear dog is.
Heath asks Mike the infamous question, can a lion shut off its scent? The two discuss theories, science, and what the heck is actually going on. The Journey is just getting started, listen up this is the diamond in the rough.

On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by host of the Pennsylvania Woodsmen Podcast, Mitchell Shirk. Together the guys unpack the unique hunting traditions of Pennsylvania, and how they also relate to many of the Northern states' big woods traditions. Mitchell also tells about bears and bear hunting, a practice that gets him very excited. And to finish off the discussion, Mitchell lays out his favorite celebration meal, and his dish to pass at the Emperor's Table. Thanks for tuning in, and enjoy this episode of Huntavore.
Mitchell Shirk says that he didn’t find podcasting, but podcasting found him. As host of the Pennsylvania Woodsman Podcast, he brings a unique skill set of hunting big woods for deer and bears with coordinated drives. These drives could be a few friends and a woodlot, to 20+ hunters over several miles. Bringing a team effort to a normally solo style of hunt. Hunting for black bear specifically becomes a huge trophy, for the fact that in a no bait state, and given the range of bears coming into range of shooter is rare. Mitchell tells the story of how his and his grandfather share getting their first bears on the same hunt. Being a novice in the kitchen, Mitchell appreciates using minimal to basic seasonings on wild game, letting the flavor of the animal come through. Mitchell is a regular contributor to the Sportsmen’ Empire network, and you can follow along with him @pennsylvaniawoodsmanpodcast on Instagram.

In this crazy world Houndsmen need all the friends they can get. With legislative assaults, whacko extremists, Karen complains about your tethered dog, fur mommies worried about your kennel and the anthropomorphic wildlife disillusionists the world seems like a pretty lonely place for Houndsmen.
On this episode of the Houndsman XP Podcast host Chris Powell is joined by the world renowned conservationist and widely accepted spokesman for true wildlife management, Ivan Carter. Ivan has hosted multiple television shows on multiple networks to tell the true story about wildlife, management of wildlife habitat and how hunting plays a valuable role in the process. Ivan has traveled the world showcasing efforts of wildlife experts. He recently traveled to Utah from his home in Zimbabwe to work on a project with the Utah Houndsmen Association and Brigham Young University to collect data on mountain lions. He has been a strong voice and supporter of the anti poaching K9 teams in Africa that have made a huge impact on Rhino poaching. He worked with the Wildlife College in Africa to develop the program.
Most importantly for our efforts as Houndsmen, he is willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with us, to tell our story and showcase our value to the entire world.

In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, Derek smells like beaver. He’s been busy trapping nuisance beavers on a property for the last few weeks using several 330 Conibear body traps. He talks about how he can’t use snares or a drowning rod and with trapping beaver, you have to work with what you got. Have you seen the” Zombeavers” movie?? Do you know how to check the gender of a beaver … it’s a bit of a sniff test. Why does Derek trap beaver if it’s not just for their pelts? Tune in to learn ever more exciting facts about beavers.
Brad is considering a questionable method of fleshing his whitetail deer hides. We bring up one of the biggest problems of having a big freezer full of wild game meat and debate over how long frozen meat is good for. We tease out some things to do with meat that’s been in there for a while and Derek drops his favorite beaver meat recipes. Brad bumps into a bonehead who broke into our trailer at the office and he recently competed in a PineWood Derby race with his son.
Jacob went fishing, of course, and went after trout and smallmouth bass. Bryaden got out to fish as well, and posed a question about the color of crawfish and water temperature. This is a good time to mention that we have a monster wave of new fishing gear coming to the GoWild store, from soft plastics to crankbaits to line, rods, reels and more, all just in time for spring fishing season, so gear up and get ready! We’re also loading up on all the gear you need for spring turkey hunting, including boots, camo, vests, and more.

[UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. [UNCENSORED] is a behind the scenes look at our adventures, failures, wins, embarrassing moments at trade shows, hilarious tales from the warehouse, and a good rant or three about the most recent tyranny from the Dark Lord of the Sith himself.
