At the point of the recording, two nights of a four-night hunt have been accomplished. The account of opening night; a date coon hunters universally look forward to all year long, is the tale of a young dog coming of age and the tale of his journey from pup to coon dog.
Each listener that keeps hounds and loves the outdoors will enjoy this podcast. The conversation will paint the picture of two friends, two hounds, a coon dog and a pup, in an amazing autumn setting that can only be experienced in depth by doing as Steve has done, by getting in the truck and putting nearly 1000 miles on the odometer before the hounds are released into the mountain air on an incredible opening night.

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is flying solo by the seat of his pants. With the holidays and hunting season, it's hard to get much of anything planned this time of year! On the road home from opening weekend of deer camp, Mitch recaps the past 10 days of hunting season. This includes a successful northwoods bear camp where the gang harvested 3 bears on the first 3 drives of opening day. Mitch delves into the backstory of why he believes this hunt was so successful, as the hunt Captain and good friend Clayton Good did an excellent job of scouting and strategically placing standers.
Next he dives into the opening weekend of deer season at his camp in north central PA. With little scouting preparation going into this weekend, there needed to be a few cards in his favor for things to line up. Spoiler alert - the cards were subpar at best. Mitch discusses why the area he chose to sit on opening day was good, however it missed the spot by about 100 yards. Still hunting with a gun was also on Mitch's mind to level his odds and cover ground, but with snow and rain followed by temps in the teens, the snow became so crunchy it was nearly impossible to still hunt successfully. Moral of the story: there is plenty of season left, keep grinding, and be patient.

"Over? Did you say 'over'? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was is over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! It ain't over now, 'cause when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Who's with me?" Of course, this is a line from the movie Animal House, where Bluto addresses the fraternity. In today's episode, Jacob shares his recent public land hunt and how he plans to pivot now that we are in December. While in many ways it feels like the party is over, there is opportunity and Jacob shares how he will approach this next phase of the deer season.
