    On the show today:

-2018 and Podcasting: What the next year might have in store for us?

What happens to your Audio Files when you Record or Upload to Spreaker

This topic is being asked really regularly, lets explain how it works right now. There are three things in place:

Spreaker keeps the original uploaded file only if it’s an mp3. So to answer the question: we do have the original file ONLY if it’s an mp3, no matter the encoding settings. This was done for different reason that what you maybe expect, and the reason was to preserve the ID3 metadata in file, since at that time we were not able to safely copy them over to the new file.

We re-encode EVERY file that’s not mp3 AND 128kbps AND stereo AND 44100Hz. This is because to keep our custom streaming server simple back in the days, we decided to support only this format.

For streaming (website + apps) we always use the re-encoded one.

For Downloads we use the original one when it’s available (see 1) except when the download comes from the iOS podcast app. The reason behind this is that we detected that app to be broken when processing some ID3 metatada (at least iOS8/9/10) so to avoid playback issues we have an exception in place that checks the user agent of the request and decide based also on that.

    Podcasting: Now and in 2018

Over the past couple of years, we have been in a content quantity and quality growth era, with the technology side really struggling to innovate in the face of relatively slow ad revenue growth and business models that would not support increases in spending on technology advancements in the podcasting medium.

In 2018, we will see newer content genres develop into being major contributors to the community of podcast creators.

“Reality and fictional storytelling podcasts seem to be hitting the mainstream on the creation and listening sides with a larger growing share of young people in a demographically balanced cross-section”

Finally will start to see some technology innovations come to the podcasting market this coming year. Will see some real progress on advertiser/agency campaigns beyond just the very big podcasts, technology innovation around metrics and monetization tools.

    - What is Podcasting Dynamic Ad Insertion? How does it work?
What are Prerolls, Midrolls and Postrolls
Host Reads or also called Live Reads - can also be dynamically inserted too if pre-recorded.
Targeted injection of a pre-recorded ad spot into an mp3 file not unlike sliding a book into a bookshelf
Targeting is done based on the listener’s IP address for geo-targeting, but other factors can be used like demographics and mapping of user preferences or likes or interests
Advertisers come into a tool and buy ad campaigns (fixed number of plays over a period of time) based on delivered plays of the ads via CPM, CPA or other less common methods
This ability is coming to Spreaker in 2018 and we are excited to work on tools like this that can help podcasters make money from all their hard work

    - What Many Sports Podcasters Can Teach Us About Building Audiences?
Actively engaging with audience on a daily basis

    - Does Podcasting have a Discovery Problem or Some Other Problem?

JacobsMedia.com posted an article this week offering quotes from many leaders in the podcasting space and about half agree we don’t have a podcast listener discovery problem: http://jacobsmedia.com/do-podcasts-have-a-discoverability-problem-we-asked-leaders-in-the-space/

But do we have an awareness/medium understanding issue still?

One quote: “Yes, podcasts have a discoverability problem, to a degree. Podcast networks appear to be the best way round that, though there’s good work being done by some tech companies, notably Castbox and RadioPublic.

The bigger problem podcasts have is that the majority of people who podcast only listen to 2 podcasts a week. The question is whether it’s possible for this to be significantly grown. Discoverability is one thing, but available eartime is quite another.”

Another quote: I feel like the problem is less about the discovery of individual podcasts, and more about discovery (and understanding) of podcasts as a whole. Rarely do I hear people who are seasoned podcast listeners complain about not being able to find anything they like to listen to. On the contrary, I often hear of listeners saying there are more shows they want to listen to, than time they have for listening!

I think the industry as a whole should be just as focused on becoming more mainstream in terms of awareness, and making it easier for new listeners to actually listen.

Rob quote in article: This continued complaining that podcasts have a discovery problem is being driven by many podcasters who are wanting to grow audience faster. Growth like that can be achieved by doing some basic things that are fundamental to online marketing practices that includes inspiring word of mouth sharing.

Many podcasters simplistically think that if their show can be magically featured or promoted at existing and new start-up audio companies and available in audio search more, then they will reach more audience and make more money. While this goal is good and fine, the real question being asked is how do we grow the overall audience for all podcasts faster.

The question should be how we grow the overall listener base for podcasting to maintain audience growth that matches the escalating number of new podcasts being launched in the market every month? To date the growth of podcast audience has been relatively slow over the past 13 years. Growth of word of mouth sharing of podcasts has been steady and been driven by increasing quality of content, expansion into new content genres and growing media coverage.

As we look forward we need to partner with our radio colleagues to transition audio audiences to the inevitable move to on demand audio listening in digital platforms. Then encourage Google Android to do a much better job of presenting podcasting content to its millions of mobile smartphone users.

    - Apple Launches New Podcast Stats Beta to Underwhelmed Podcast Community

The talk about the New Apple Podcasts stats kinda landed with a thud, not much discussion in the community as it is very early days for the new Apple data and much of it is just not populated. Many shows are just not populated with data yet.

It is still very interesting to see the number of devices connected to episodes in a timeline to see when devices drop off listening and the over indexing of listening to some episode (listened to more than once by the same device). We have more questions than answers at this point and will develop but go check it out you podcast and see for yourself

The new podcast metrics beta into this area https://podcastsconnect.apple.com you should check it out if you have a podcast on in Apple #Podcasts.

    On the show today:

Podcon: Who are the Young Creative Storytellers and Why are they Important to Podcasting

Podcon.com 2017: Most attendees were all very young, new and enthusiastic about podcasting. Was a really interesting event. It uncovered a whole new genre "Young Creative Storytellers" community in podcasting.

Podcon could easily become the largest podcasting event next year, even bigger than Podcast Movement, but got a sense that maybe the first year event was not big enough for its VIDCON organizers.

Yet, this is sea change and scale of this community that combines YouTube + Comicon + Podcasting + Character Fans will transform podcasting community as we know it in just a few years.

This community is largely female and ready to write and tell entertaining and emotional stories to passionate fan/communities that are willing to dress up in costumes of the characters in the stories being told in podcasts of the next generation. This is even larger potential impact then when the comedians joined podcasting in 2009. Audio theater of the mind has been rebirthed in a new generation.

Not a single person we talked to 300 plus wanted to do sports, business, tech to a person all wanted to do storytelling shows like lore etc. this was one of the most refreshing events in a very long time. W need more storytellers and this audience will generate the next serial, lore etc..

Editing Audio via Text Editing is HERE
    https://medium.com/descript/introducing-descript-fa37eb193819
    http://descript.com

Service is called “Descript”, only supports MAC today - you can request to be added to a list requesting a windows version.

Launched with a $5M seed investment from Andreesen Horowitz VC.

Descript is taking advantage of the recent explosion in speech recognition accuracy to press the reset button on how talk-driven media is being created and edited.

    1. Audio Word Processing
View voice audio files as text instead of waveforms — and then edit the audio by editing text. Cleaned up by simply editing the script at 15 cents a minute = 45 min show costs = $6.75 cents, but does not correct any space or other audio issues, so you will need to do a second round of editing in a wave editor too.

    2. Fast/Cheap/Accurate Transcription (by robots or humans, as needed)

Fast. Transcripts in under five minutes.
Cheap. Just 7¢ per minute of audio— pricing details here.
    Accurate. Up to 95% accurate,

    3. Waveform Editor with a special trick
For fine-tuned trims and crossfades, Descript has a full-featured waveform editor. It’s got something you won’t find anywhere else — the Word Bar. Just grab a word tab to add/remove silence between words:

    4. Web Publishing and Commenting
Publish your Descript composition to the Web, and share the link with friends and colleagues, who can listen and leave comments, Google Docs style. If you’ve ever had to give feedback on an audio file, you’ll love this a lot. See a live demo here.

    5. Non-destructively export to other audio apps
After you’re done editing in Descript, you can export your session to a format that can be read by Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, and most other Digital Audio Workstations. That means it will preserve the original audio file, and all of your edits will be visible when you open it in the DAW.

Today’s Descript — a single-track voice audio editor with automated transcription — is the tip of the iceberg. With a little imagination, you can guess where we’re going — a ground-up reimagining of how people create talk-driven media.

    Planning Your Podcast Script
    https://blog.spreaker.com/2017/12/06/planning-podcast-script/

The big question is whether you should or shouldn’t plan your podcast script and there are people who sit in both camps. Some believe that scripted podcasts make speech feel stiff and rehearsed, others believe it’s the key to being confident, concise and keeping the content flowing.

The answer is to plan, but to plan right, as it is almost impossible to create great content without some sort of planning.

No need for a rigid script which you follow word for word, you can create a guide which gives you pointers and leads you through your topics. The power of planning is that it ensures captivating content which hooks listeners and keeps you focused.

    A clear summary
To get started you need to look at the bigger picture – what are the main ideas and themes you want to cover during your podcast? Start by getting the central ideas down on paper and use them to branch out into smaller subcategories –

    Write how you talk
Once you have your ideas clear, it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty, the writing, and there are lots of tools out there to help you get your writing in order.

    Show Your Style
Whilst re-reworking your script you need to remember that you have a very short window in which to grab listeners attention. Your intro should pack with a punch and immediately deliver your podcast’s personality and style.

first impression’ – which means you literally have seconds to convince your audience that you’re worth listening to.

Giving your podcast character and individuality is what will create a bond between you and listeners; write with a friendly style and avoid using complicated terminology which could cause listeners to lose interest.

    Refine it to Perfection
The final step in getting your podcast ready for broadcast is refining it until you feel confident that it delivers with power. One of the best ways to be sure is to read your text aloud. Reading text aloud means you will become more familiar with the material, giving you more confidence and it will highlight any weaknesses or errors so you can rework them until perfection. So get reading and get perfecting!

What is clear is that great podcasts are never accidental but that different types of podcasts require different levels of preparation. Whatever your podcast style – organization will allow you to feel prepared with information to hand – adding confidence to your presentation and allowing your podcast to soar!

Easier Podcast Listening with the New Spreaker Podcast Radio Widget
    https://blog.spreaker.com/2017/12/05/new-spreaker-podcast-radio-widget/
We’re adding a new feature that will have you listening to your favorite and most listened to podcasts in no time at all. Introducing the new Spreaker Podcast Radio home screen widget.

Your tried and true podcasts will be clearly laid out for you and each will be readily accessible with just a tap, right from your home screen. It’ll save you swipes and time, especially when you’re multitasking between your workout, emails, and instant messages.

Check out this rundown of how the widget works:
    - The widget will display an array of podcasts, even when your phone is locked, divided into two sections.

    - In the top half, you’ll find the podcasts you listen to most.
    - Tap on any one of them and you’ll be prompted to unlock your phone. As soon as you do, the Spreaker Podcast Radio app will open up automatically to that very podcast.

Just below, you’ll see your most recently downloaded episodes. By tapping on any one of those, you’ll go through a similar process as the one mentioned above: You’ll be prompted to unlock your phone, but this time, you’ll be brought automatically to a list of whatever you last downloaded.
Easy peasy, isn’t it? And your podcast or episode will start playing immediately, too.
    iOS and Android widgets

You can add Spreaker Podcast Radio’s widget to your home screen like you would any other app:

    On iOS:
Swipe the home screen or lock screen to the right.
Scroll down to the bottom. Then tap on Edit.
Tap on the “+” symbol to add Spreaker Podcast Radio to your home screen.
    Tap on Done to finish.

    On Android:
Touch and hold any empty space on the home screen.
    Tap on the Widgets icon.
Touch and hold the Spreaker Podcast Radio widget.
A preview of your home screen will appear.
Drop the widget on whichever spot you prefer.
Check out the new quick actions
    And there’s more.

A few other side features will be introduced together with the widget that will get you to your favorite content even faster. The name says it all: quick actions are shortcuts that get you to different kinds of content in a snap. Now, by just touching and holding (on Android) or 3D touching (on iOS) Spreaker Podcast Radio’s app icon, you’ll be able to begin a new search, open the Listen Later playlist, or open the Downloads playlist.

But a quick note: While quick actions are available to all iOS users, currently they’re only available to Android users with Android 7.1 and above (Nougat).

Finally caught a live show. Perhaps the defination of podcast could be modified. Maybe another term. Or the creator is clear in what they are doing. For example, this is the XYZ show on YouTube or FB Live and being record for playback on the XYZ podcast. Thanks for the show!

Hello, I have been listening to The Spreaker Live show since the first episode. I have also listened to the Exum Experience since 2015. I have a question. I moving my podcast to spreaker in January. Is there a way I can put my spreaker podcasts behind a pay wall? If not directly through spreaker, what if I set my back catalog to private on spreaker. Then embed the player behind a paywall on my site. Would that work? Anyway thanks I love the show.

Is there a new trend that if you create online media content of any kind — YouTube, Twitch, Google Hangouts, for example — you call it a podcast?
Episodes only on YouTube are more and more being called a podcast. Only place you can find it. Is that a podcast? To be a podcast, media must be hosted for download and an RSS feed. So is this something new? “Oh look, I have a discussion I have recorded. It’s online. I’ll call it my podcast.”

How to Find the Right Tone of Voice for your Podcast
    https://blog.spreaker.com/2017/11/28/find-right-tone-voice-podcast/

Whether you listen to Common Sense with Dan Carlin, PBS NewsHour, or The New Yorker to get your podcast newsfix you’re aware of the big difference in how the presenters communicate their message; not just in the language they use but also their tone of voice.

Tone can convey a thousand things to a listener and is key in getting what you want to say across correctly, how you use it will affect everything from how you’re interpreted as a person to the sincerity of the message you’re broadcasting. The Guardian says tone will “affect how we’re seen in terms of our personality, our emotional state, and even our professional competence”. Let’s take a look at some of the different podcast genres out there and see how you can use tone to create impact for yours!

    Journalistic
Generally speaking, if you’re reporting news a more ‘formal’ tone of voice is required. You need to sound authoritative and speaking with a lower pitch will help audience members feel confident in your credibility. Speak clearly and enunciate well, putting emphasis on the key facts such as locations and timings of events – there’s no room for misunderstandings with the news. However, you need to find that sweet spot where you aren’t over-enunciating as you could come across as patronizing! Last but not least you must always sound objective, keep a steady tone and try not to put emphasis on words which could imply personal opinion. Check out how Up First report the daily news for some inspiration on how to hit the right reporting note. As a rule of thumb, Jill Geisler advises to “communicate with command, comfort, and clarity”.

    Intimate - Passionate
At the other end of the spectrum, if you’re planning on sharing intimate details with your audience you need to take on a completely different voice persona, being as natural as possible. Talking about personal matters such as: marital problems, relationships and sexuality need to sound unrehearsed and honest. Imagine you are talking to a friend one-on-one, emphasize words you normally would and add inflection at the end of a phrase, making your speech sound question-like will invite listeners in.
Kaitlin Prest’s show The Heart is just the sort of tonal dialogue to be aiming for check out her episode on arranged marriage to get some insight in how to use your voice.

    Reassuring
To have a voice which makes listeners feel in safe hands you need to sound genuine and warm. Your aim is to communicate with a soothing tone which creates a bubble of trust between you and your audience – opening up the opportunity for sharing. states Low frequency, continuous sounds are seen as comforting and Jennifer Pardo, says “in general people who speak a little slower tend to be perceived as more friendly” – marrying these two elements will help you be accepted as a trusted source by your listeners. ‘Agony aunt’ Dan Savage’s hit podcast, Savage Lovecast gives food for thought on how to master a comforting voice, his recent episode on will idea of what to work towards. To achieve it, imagine how a therapist might communicate with their patient – speak slowly in a stable low tone, inviting listeners into a safe virtual environment.

    Informative / Educational - Passionate
Reliability and credibility are the key character traits you want to convey when presenting an educational or informative show. To hit the nail on the head, speak with conviction, have a steady tone, communicate clearly and with confidence and don’t add go up in pitch at the end of your sentences – it will sound like you doubt what you’re saying! Try listening to Flash Forward discussing climate change to get some inspiration on how to use your voice. Sounding like a trusted source means pacing yourself, speaking too quickly and you come off sounding nervous and unsure, and add pauses here and there to add weight to what you’re saying.

    Storytelling
The key to great storytelling? “Communicating your humanity” according to the Huffingtonpost.com. Performance/acting. Be as human as possible, allow your audience to connect with what you’re saying and this will captivate them and compel them into wanting more. Be playful in where you place emphasis on words, storytelling can also allow you to have fun and take on various voices to convey different characters. Chasing Ghosts is a perfect example of the sort of engaging true-crime storytelling which has taken the world by storm of late – listen and get creative!

This American Life’s presenter Ira Glass shares his trick for gripping storytelling, “Any story hits you harder if the person delivering it doesn’t sound like a news robot but, in fact, sounds like a real person having the reactions a real person would”. The overriding tip? Be as natural as possible with how you use your tone of voice, it is how a listener will engage with you as a presenter and ultimately connect with the message and TheBalance.com confirms this “on-air media superstars are those with the natural ability to communicate”.

I have already gone to other platforms, Wenoo and VidLii. No problems in either places. To clarify the monetizing comment, I mean that people are getting flagged even if they are not monetized. By fair use, I mean reviewing a product or program even if you do not actually use images or clips from what you are reviewing, just flagged for mentioning their name.

    On the show today:

What is a SUPER Podcast Listener? Sharing some recent researchtelephone survey of media habits, a portrait emerged of what appears to be the podcasting “super listener” — a highly engaged consumer of informative digital audio content.
    https://medium.com/informed-and-engaged/understanding-public-medias-most-engaged-podcast-users-bb592cd7e03e

In April and May of 2017, Edison Research — with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation — conducted a series of online interviews with podcast listeners across a group of major podcast publishers. We collected a total of 28,964 interviews with podcast listeners 18 years of age or older, all of whom listened to at least one audio podcast from one of six sources: National Public Radio, WNYC, American Public Media, WBUR, PRX and Gimlet Media. (For more on the methodology, please see the appendix.)
In comparing these results with the Edison/Triton Infinite Dial research series, a nationally representative

Some of the characteristics of this “super listener” include:
Greater content consumption (by hours and by shows listened to).
A preference for subscription (Not Paid) and time-shifted consumption.
Reliance on mobile consumption, usually in transit.
A willingness to promote content to others, and reliance on word-of-mouth.
    A preference for in-depth content.
A loyalty to public media, and willingness to invest — even as broadcast consumption levels decline.

    Conclusion:
This study, and our ability to compare it with two other, more representative datasets of podcast consumers, gave us a fascinating perspective on the public media podcast “super listener.” It is clear that while they don’t represent the body of podcast listeners across participating publishers, they do represent the most active, most engaged and most willing to take supportive actions. They can also be tapped as ambassadors for the medium. Finding ways to “ask for the order” and providing them with incentives to share new podcasts (and indeed, the medium in general) with their friends and family as passionate advocates and influencers might be one of the most powerful marketing tools at our disposal.

We also learned that these respondents are receptive to national and international news content via podcasts, and they trust this content — again, as potential advocates for the dissemination of this content. And finally, these younger, more mobile podcast consumers are taking content (including public media content) on the road with them — opening up contextual opportunities for new forms of content for consumers on public transit, at the gym, or in other short, opportunistic windows.

Podcast Suicide: 5 Errors to Avoid
    1. Refusing to recognize your target audience
While keeping a broad appeal is good, not targeting a specific bracket is like shooting yourself in the foot. It’s like refusing to recognize that you’re speaking to actual listeners, not just to thin air.
Start with the very basics: who is your model listener? Are they a man or a woman? Are they a 23-year-old student who is getting serious about politics, or a 55-year-old launching a new career? What do they get up to at the weekends?
It may feel weird at first to draw up an identikit of your ideal target audience member, but keeping this picture in mind will help you avoid going off on unrelated directions, and even really help you in matters such as deciding your episode’s duration or getting your podcast exposure on relevant platforms.

    2. Not having a pre-launch marketing plan
This is no time to be modest. At the very beginning, you have got to be your very own cheerleader – cos if you don’t cheer, who will? Your launch is a great moment to capitalize on excitement – that energy is hard to regain at a later date, if you miss that opportunity.

A pre-launch marketing plan demonstrates confidence that you can pull this off and passion in your topic and the podcasting format. That’s the kind of attitude that intrigues listeners, even before being presented with the actual content.
Give yourself a checklist for getting listeners on board with the hype from day 1:
Create a launch team of 20+ people that commit to downloading and sharing your podcast with all their networks too.
Build a database of influencers who can give a first boost to your audience
Have your social media pages building momentum, follow people in your target audience to encourage them to follow back
Search for the hottest trend related to your topic on Twitter
Set a launch date and a clear plan of the next episodes

    3. Not bothering to submit to iTunes
Maybe you just haven’t got round to it yet. Maybe you are trying an alternative podcatcher service. But there’s no denying that the first place where listeners seek out podcasts is iTunes so no submitting yours amounts to podcast suicide.
Aside from the fact that many devices have iTunes pre-installed on them, making it the first point of call especially for podcast newbies, if you manage to get a high rate of downloads, subscriptions, rates and reviews podcast once it goes live, there is also the opportunity to be featured in the New and Noteworthy section in your first weeks, which will be a great boost for even more listeners taking notice.
Business podcaster Tyler Basu, whose podcast ranked at the top of iTunes’ USA New and Noteworthy charts when it launched, suggests that one clever way to better your chances is to be very strategic in how categorize your podcast. Consider also putting your podcast in several categories as well as subcategories that won’t be as broad and competitive.

    4. Messing up your RSS feed
The magic touch of podcasting lies in the seamless way information syncs up, like a smooth dive into a pool. This is thanks to your RSS feed. Messing that up, well, it’s tantamount to a belly-flop: jarring and kinda cringe-worthy.

Always make sure to submit the same RSS feed on all the distributive platforms that you use, for every episode you publish. You should avoid at all costs spreading around different RSS according to the different platform that you use because you’ll never have one single link where people can access and download your show – therefore cutting you off from gathering clear, comprehensive statistics from across the board.
A singular RSS feed is easier to follow in case something goes wrong. An easy trick to keep on top of this is subscribing to your own podcast so you can quickly double-check your RSS feed is working once you publish new episodes.

    5. Uploading your podcast directly onto your website
It’s nice to keep everything in one place, but that’s no reason for uploading your podcast files onto the same server as your website. First of all, hosting your podcast on your site will be a strain on your bandwidth and therefore make your website really slow. Secondly, the audio quality will not be so good.
Podcast hosting services are the answer, particularly when the podcast player can be fully embedded into your official website and customized to fit in with your branding. Host platforms such as Soundcloud, Libsyn, Spreaker and Podbean all offer embedded players, so it’s worth exploring the various different features – you’ll find that some are mobile-friendly, too, as well as being able to track plays, downloads, and likes.

    6. Not inspiring emotions in your listeners

    Comments:

    Linda Irwin
You Tube has been marking everyone "not advertiser friendly" en masse. If you get enough, they will shut down your channel. You can appeal this if you have, IIRC, 1,000 or more subscribers. They are also hitting people that are not monetizing. We have no idea why they are doing this. Fair use means nothing even if you are making commentary.

    Linda Irwin
Also when I embed Spreaker to Wix, using the "embed code" widget, you can also change the size to specifications "height= width=". Autoplay if "0", change to "1" in the code script if you want shows to autoplay.

When I submitted to iHeart 22 episodes in, I was rejected specifically because I did not have at least 100 followers. This was back in August 2015.LOL

A New Research Report focuses on Canadian podcast consumption, conducted by Audience Insights, a Canadian audience research firm.

Podcasting is becoming an increasingly important part of the Canadian conversation.
Nearly 10 million Canadian adults have listened to a podcast in the past year.

The demographic trends younger, more affluent, and more educated, also leans male. That’s more or less in the same bucket as Australia and the U.S

24% of adults listening monthly and 15% weekly. A fast-growing audience, more than
7-in-10 started listening in the past three years.

Podcasting attracts often hard-to-reach young, affluent, educated consumers.
Podcast listening peaks among 18-34 year olds, among men, among those with a
university education, and in households with more than $100K income.

Podcast listeners show an appetite to hear more Canadian produced podcasts.

-Why Start Podcasting If You’re a Small Business

As a small business, it can be impossible to find your unique voice in the marketplace and successfully reach your audience. Consumers’ lives are saturated by advertising on a daily basis, so just how can you create brand personality and make your business heard?

The answer is podcasts. Podcasts are increasingly being integrated into brands’ content marketing strategies and rightly so; it is advertising which requires minimal equipment, little money and offers businesses the opportunity to create an intimate rapport with their customer.

If you need further convincing as to why podcasts are the future of B2C advertising, here are three more reasons as to why they might be just what your business needs to get on the road to establishing a relationship of trust between brand and consumer:

-Let them hear your business’s most intimate voice
Podcasts allow you to create a voice and personality for your brand, in turn allowing you to build an intimate relationship with your customer. It is tailor-made content, which is thoughtful, informative and can make you stand out amongst the crowd. By speaking directly to your customer it helps put you on a level with them, allowing consumers to feel more empathetic towards your brand and letting them see another side of your business.

    -Grow your audience with interviews
Securing an influential guest who has a large or loyal following can be a great way of broadening your audience. Guests who are not directly related to your subject matter or might offer a unique point of view give you the opportunity to entice new listeners. More importantly, if the guests are willing to share the content via their social media channels it can give a real boost to your numbers and strengthen brand validity.

Reach your customers without them even thinking about it
What makes podcasts truly unique as a content medium is the fact they don’t require undivided attention like lots of other media, such as video. Podcasts are easily consumable content – you can speak to your audience while they are going about their daily lives: driving, cooking or commuting. The development of home listening devices such as Amazon Echo allow listeners to multi-task while they get their podcast hit and mobile devices allow listening on the move.

Research is showing that the number of people listening to podcasts outside the home is on the up swing:

“While Home continues to be the most often named location for podcast listening, the vehicle is a strong second.” Edison Research.

If used wisely podcasts can be a powerful tool in a small business’s content marketing strategy. They allow companies to directly speak to their consumers in a personalized way and are a clever way to create a trusted relationship between brand and customer. More importantly, all you need to get started is a microphone, a computer, and some recording equipment…so what are you waiting for?

Preparing Your Show for Podcast Advertising
If your goal is to monetize from advertising then running ads early in your podcast and often is good practice.

Getting skilled and practicing doing ads is important as you will not be good at it out of the gate
When paying advertisers are interested then you and your show will be ready
Gets your listeners accustomed to hearing ads on your show as adding ads to an ad free show can be jarring for your listeners
Start driving home the idea that advertising supports the sponsors that make the show possible, greater ad response
Get started with Affiliate Programs like Amazon Affiliates, Commission Junction (CJ.com) or Share A Sale
This gives you an inventory of sample ads that you can show potential CPM advertisers that you have the skills to create and deliver a great ad read - create an mp3 of all the reads you have done one after another
The best way to cut those sample ad reads for the ad demo mp3 is to save the clips with 30 seconds of lead in, the ad spot and 30 seconds of post ad content. This will give advertisers a sense of how you lead in, deliver and roll out of an ad spot.
Start keeping track on every single episode where an ad could be dynamically injected into your mp3 file. If you’re doing your show and find a natural transition spot record that time hack for each episode down to this HH:MM:SS.

    Tips:

    - Find a product on Amazon Associate or any product or service you love that has an affiliate program and apply for it.
    - Thought leaders who sell courses and information products online offer affiliate partnerships
    - What about your own product or service gives you something to promote on your show.
    - Keep the ads relevant.
    - You only get good at running ads when you’re really running ads
    - Prepare for ads to be dynamically inserted in the future.
    - “Dynamic insertion” refers to a type of ad inserted at a pre-determined time in the episodeo

    - Creating an App for Your Podcast Just Got Easier!

Connect with your audience more directly with an exclusive experience, all while expanding on your brand, with a customized Mobile App dedicated to your show.

It’s a seemingly small addition to your podcast’s overall distribution system that offers considerable benefits. It’s just about the closest you can get to your listeners, who can download your app (from either iTunes or Google Play—you can choose where to place it) and use it to get direct access to your show and only your show. There’s no getting distracted by other podcasts, and they’ll be able to give back and show you their love and appreciation by liking your episodes and leaving comments.

Aside from this intimate experience, Mobile Apps also offer a way to expand and build upon your podcast’s mission, what it stands for, and the brand you’ve constructed around it. It’s a professional touch that impresses listeners as well as potential sponsors looking for established podcasts to support and work with.

Creating and customizing a Mobile App is a cinch. Spreaker offers a simple app-builder straight from its website where you can modify and manage your app with just a few clicks. How it looks and the keywords and information you add are all your choice and under your control. And if it building one was easy before, it’s even easier now, thanks to a few more features we’ve added to make creating your app a snap. Now you can crop your images and get some immediate help with your title and descriptions.

    Crop your images
Those of you who have already submitted a Mobile App to either the iTunes Store or Google Play know that they are infuriatingly specific about the images you use to brand and embellish your app. You have to adhere to strict restrictions, not just in regards to content, but size, too. If you don’t set them correctly right off the bat, with the exact measurements required, you’re either prevented from completing your app or risk publishing one with distorted images.
So we’ve come up with a solution that’s easy and will make you look good, too. Now, once you’ve uploaded your images while building your app, you can crop them as you please right from the builder. So even if you upload images that are bigger than what’s needed, you’ll still be able to adjust them to make them fit.

Taking the words right out of your mouth
Coming up with a way to describe your podcast that’s both informative and enticing is not exactly easy, and it gets even harder when you have to worry about keywords and creating multiple descriptions that differ just enough from each other.

But now you won’t have to waste any more time coming up with various turns of phrases and call-to-actions. As you build your Mobile App, the app name, short description, and long description will appear in the fields pre-populated for you, drawing from the information you’ve included on your podcast’s Spreaker page. Of course, you can always modify the text if you’d like, but otherwise you’ll be free to just carry on with the rest of the setup and submit it.

Now, not only can you customize your Mobile App to your heart’s content, but you can do it all in less than 10 minutes! It’s a professional product, made exclusively for your listeners, that’ll be ready in a jiffy.

Ready to take your podcast to the next level? Create your own Mobile App now!
