    On the show today:

We discuss 2004: Podcasting is Born Stories
-Many new people in podcasting have a big misunderstanding on how this medium started
-Partially Correct: Adam Curry earned the nickname “Podfather” not by inventing podcasting, but by driving the digital-consumption model into the mainstream with his hit program Daily Source Code.
-Correct: Adam helped create the first RSS based “Podcatcher” application that triggered the automatic download and transfer of a media file (mp3) to a portable media player like iPod.
-Correct: Actual credit for the invention of the podcasting open syndication concept/model goes to Dave Winer. Software developer Winer helped create Really Simple Syndication (RSS) — a basic web like text document/feed simplifying the process of subscribing to websites and other online media. He used RSS to deliver his audio program.
-Incorrect: Apple created the Podcasting Medium
-Correct: Apple added Podcasts to iTunes June, 2005, almost a year after podcasting started in Aug/Sept 2004.
-Rob Greenlee’s Interview with Adam Curry in 2005 - http://web.archive.org/web/20130729211722id_/http://itc.conversationsnetwork.org/shows/detail581.html

We discuss “Court says patent troll didn’t invent podcasting?”

-A patent holder that went after podcasters in 2013 has lost its appeal before the Federal Circuit. In 2015, the Electronic Frontier Foundation successfully petitioned the US Patent and Trademark Office to invalidate parts of Personal Audio, LLC’s patent, arguing that they were not the first to invent a “system for disseminating media content representing episodes in a serialized sequence.”

-For example, in 2011, a jury awarded Personal Audio $8 million from Apple over a patent on downloadable playlists. But the podcasting patent itself became particularly notorious after Personal Audio sued comedian and radio show host Adam Carolla over his podcast The Adam Carolla Show in 2013. “How could a patent issued in 2012 cover podcasting, a technology that's been around since 2001?” asked Dave Winer, who is sometimes billed as the co-creator of podcasting technology.

-Carolla raised nearly half a million dollars from outraged fans for legal representation, only to reach a settlement with the patent holder about a year later. Since the settlement could not stop Personal Audio from suing other podcasters in the future, the EFF went to the patent office itself to invalidate the patent.

-The Federal Circuit upheld the patent office’s decision to invalidate five key claims in the podcasting patent. The court agreed that earlier academic publications describing online broadcasting by CNN and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation not only “anticipated” the claims being made in the patent, but also showed that the claimed invention was too “obvious” to warrant protection.

    We discuss “Show Promotion Strategies”

-Building reputation in related online discussion / social media communities

-Communities exist all over the Internet: Facebook Groups, Reddit Subreddits, Google+ Communities, and more. Often times your audience hangs out in these communities, and they may be interested in your podcast.

-Be careful not to spam a bunch of communities with your self-promotion. That will quickly get you banned and get you a poor reputation inside of those communities.

-Ideally you will only have time to participate in a few of these groups, so pick wisely. Post questions, share answers, and comment on other posts. Become an active, contributing member of that community. Then, when it's relevant and appropriate, you may find opportunities to share an episode of your podcast or your website if you have some relevant information to share.

    Participate live

-Get involved in live-broadcast shows or events however you can, as will give you a great opportunity to connect with other potential listeners.

-You could host your own live chat sessions. That could be powered by your own hashtag or by a chat room embedded on a /live audio or video page on your own website. ChatWING, Chattango, Flyzoo, and Chatroll.

-Time event to focus on Eastern and Central usually broadcast together and might have the most audience.

Live-stream after conference or other news related event or episode

-You could consider doing a Live bonus episode after your recorded show is published.

Align publishing with the related news event

-Timely publishing are the most important things you can do with a current-events-based podcast. Incorporating audience feedback, you'll need to allow enough time for your audience to watch and send their feedback.

-Too much time passing from news event to lessen impact.

    Time zones are Important

-Try to accommodate different time zones as much as possible.

-For example, hosting a live stream at 7 pm Eastern may conflict with people still at work when it's 4 pm Pacific. Or a 10 pm Pacific event is 1 am Eastern.

-You should be aware of how such choices may limit your audience's participation.

-Consider using Eastern if you're in the USA. That's considered the official time in the USA because the capital is in Eastern Time.

-Be technically accurate with your time zone abbreviations. “EST” applies to standard time, while “EDT” applies to Daylight Saving Time.

    Promote Soon

-Promote episode as quickly, as possible! It would also help to promote it for days following the event.

-Create a recurring schedule for your promotion that could look something like this:

-Day of event: Promote coming episode, live chat, then promote episode after show
1 day after: Promote after show episode
2 days after: Promote after show episode and ask for feedback
    4 days after: Promote episode
5 days after: Promote upcoming live episode participation for next show
6 days after (day before next event): Encourage upcoming live participation

-Listeners care most about your podcast when the subject is already on their minds. So the more quickly you can publish your content about the current event, the more your existing and potential new audience will be interested in your episode.

    Watch for timely opportunities

-The actual news related event may not be the only opportunity you have to leverage the audience's energy. Watch for breaking news and announcements you can use to create or promote relevant content. This could be a great time for you to promote that older content. For example:

    On the show today:

We discuss “Does Podcasting have a Discovery Issue?”

    https://blog.audioboom.com/lack-of-diversity-in-podcast-market-stems-from-issue-of-discoverability-according-to-audioboom-d5421b92f096

YouGov, reveals that 76% of minority Americans listen to podcasts less than once a week, with 60% not listening at all.
Findings show that 3 in 4 minority Americans listen to podcasts less than once a week, partly due to not knowing where to find them, as well as being unaware of podcasts that cover the diverse topics they’re interested in.
In order to address this discrepancy and make podcasts more appealing to the masses, there’s a need to create more diverse content, identify and nurture undiscovered minority podcast talent, bring more niche shows to the top of the charts, and make podcasts more convenient for on-the-go listeners.
Create more diverse content: Among minority Americans who think podcasts could become more mainstream to a diverse audience, almost half (46%) believe that creating more content around topics that appeal to diverse audiences would help.
Content creators need to remember that the term “minorities” doesn’t just refer to race — it also encompasses interests and lifestyles.
This also includes working with different content producers and up-and-coming hosts that will inevitably bring a different perspective for an entirely new segment of listeners.
    Discover undiscovered podcast talent:
According to the report, among US minorities who believe that podcasts can be made more mainstream to a diverse audience, 31% think that finding undiscovered podcast talent (i.e. hosts, producers, etc.) would make them more listened to.
US minorities who believe that podcasts can be made more mainstream to a diverse audience, 34% think using technology to boost the ease of discovering diverse podcasts would help solve the issue.
Make podcasts convenient, especially for women on-the-go: 25% of women surveyed care about the length of the podcast, citing that they would only engage with podcasts that can be listened to in full, while on the go???
The facts are Podcasts are pretty easy to discover today, depending on your definition of Discovery? Not knowing what app to use is an understanding and awareness issue, not content discovery issue.

We discuss “What Changes are Coming and Needed in Radio Now?”

Radio industry needs the leadership and views from the millennials generation in stations to reach and connect with the now largest age segment of the USA market. Given the fact that the boomer generation. Millennials are different and are shifting to other types of content and on demand audio aka podcasts.
We are in a period of change for radio and how people access the audio content, the transition from over air to digital gradually converging on each other.
I am hearing a conflicting message on stage at the conclave, one is that we are fine as we have 93% of people listening to radio and then others are saying that radio is under threat from digital distribution.
Some are also saying radio industry is slowly disappearing and becoming audio experience industry. Clearly public radio is ahead of commercial radio in it transition to on demand digital and podcasting distribution.
Unless radio transitions to digital platforms for live and on demand distribution then stations will be in trouble.
The key factor in this potential disaster for radio with the fast growing Apple’s CarPlay and Android Auto platforms that are being deployed in most new cars today.
The other interesting topic at the event was a session titled “Here’s to The Rulebreakers”. This session highlighted the continuing need for creative out of the box content that shock and engage listeners.
The concept of a “Shock Jock” is not so much embraced by the current on demand podcasting market. It seems like this could be the viral content opportunity that is missing from the podcasting space.

    On the show today:

We discuss “Is Podcasting Growing Up?”
-Podcasting is growing up: According to the Interactive Advertising Bureau, podcast industry ad revenue will reach $220 million in 2017, up 85 percent from 2016’s $119 million. And, after years of offering only an opaque “downloads” number, Apple is getting ready to give podcast creators more data about their listeners.
-IAB Version 2.0 Podcast Measurement Guidelines Released
    -https://www.iab.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Podcast-Measurementv2.0.pdf

We discuss “Will Better Tracking of Downloads from Apple Help Make Podcasting Better?”
-Some will want to optimize for the metrics when creating shows, some will not
-Will having more specificity about podcast numbers attract more advertisers and benefit the creators of shows that have passionate audiences?
-Not so sure we have a big issue with it now as most advertisers are fine with downloads as a metric.
-This change will give a little bit more data on duration and activity around already downloaded files, but will still not give us a “COMPLETE” data on this as many podcatchers enabling downloads are not being tracked by Apple.
-This so called “black box” of not knowing actual plays of downloaded episodes. I question the commonly held belief with some podcasting analysts scares away a lot of advertisers that are accustomed to a higher degree of measurement and more specificity into whether your ads are being served. Some may not jump in with full budgets, but it has not really held back brands and companies from testing and running podcast ads to date.
-With this New Apple data there could be many podcasts realizing that they didn’t have audiences as big as they thought based on download numbers.
-There’s going to be a percentage of podcasts that realize they have a very, very engaged audience base that is listening to whole episodes and not dropping out early.
-This new data could cause a resizing and reconceptualization of, how do you measure for the success of a show?

    Listener Comments:
Linda Irwin Also, keep consistent distance from your microphone and avoid excessive "You know", "Umm" and "Like" peppered throughout your sentences.

I never listen nor am involved with BTR since May 2015. What Alex said in addition to the sound quality being poor on BTR. Always make sure if you have a guest, get to know what the guest is presenting. Sending media kits for them to fill out well in advance of having them on so you have time to research and can give your own perspectives on their points of view.

There are those also where segments are pre-recorded and then produced in advance.

I wish the Spreaker Desktop software would record multiple tracks. Say there are three people on Hangouts or two people on Skype, record a track from each source. That addition would make it an amazing studio (in my opinion).

We discuss “Show Guest Interviews or Co-Hosts: What Format is Best?”

    Solo, co-host, or guest?
There are a few different podcast formats you could try:

    - Only you: You’re the host, the one host, and the only host.
    - This can work but you must have a talent for connecting with listeners, rare talent
    - You + one other standing host: You co-host with same partner for every episode.
    - This can work well, is a matter of chemistry between the two, but is a gamble
    - You will find with good and regular co-host you can build a solid/loyal audience
    - You + guest: You interview with a new guest on each episode.
    - You could also have a standing co-host + guest, but complicated
    - This format brings new perspectives, opinions, stories, voices, and talent to every episode. Your guests will share their episodes with their audiences, too, serving as advocates that will help you grow your listener base.

  • SLS: Getting Ready for Followers & Advertisers
Spreaker Live Show #117 for June 28th, 2017

    Show Today:
-How To Be Ready and When You Are Ready for Advertising
-Spreaker Announces “Follower Tracking in CMS Tools”
    -Your comments and questions

    Show Duration: 58 minutes

Host: Rob Greenlee, Head of Content, Spreaker @robgreenlee - rob(at)spreaker(dotcom)
Co-Host: Alex Exum, Host of “The Exum Experience Podcast” on Spreaker

    On the show today:
-On the Spreaker Blog this week is an NEW article titled: “Podcast, and They Will Follow: Spreaker Introduces Follower Tracking!” at http://Blog.Spreaker.com
-We’re thrilled to launch a new data point: follower tracking!
-With that info, you can put together a very specific idea of what your typical listener is like.

-Helps you refine your content with a target audience in mind, as that target will dictate the angle, language, and overall tone you’ll take on when approaching your podcast.
-Statistics can let you know if your show and target line up and help you hone your show segments/topics further.

-If you’re looking to actually earn money through your podcast, then detailed statistics will provide the crucial data you need to report to ad agencies or sponsors.
-They’ll know exactly what types of products or messages to advertise during your podcast and the kind of reach to expect.
-What can your followers tell you?
-For one, you can trace spikes in followers back to actual episodes and marketing decisions.
-Maybe that spike coincides with that amazing interview. Or perhaps it came right after that killer social media campaign.
-Second, one could argue that your follower count is just as, if not more, important than your plays.
-However – similarly to subscribing – someone who opts to follow you and your shows is committed. They want to find out more and plan on coming back.
-It also shows you’ve kept up all your promises on your end as a phenomenal podcaster: keeping up with high-quality content, a consistent schedule, and engaging material.

-Lastly, follower info helps you get to know your audience well – like really well. A Spreaker follower is an actual person with a profile you can look at.

-So, whenever you see a sudden upshot in numbers, find out who else that follower follows and who follows them back, and discover a whole network of communities to tap into.

-These new statistical gold nuggets can be found straight from Spreaker’s CMS, right in the Statistics section, though only if you have a Broadcaster plan or higher.

-You’ll see your total amount of account followers on any given day and track their growth as time goes by.
-Like what you see? Take a peep in your CMS to see the new development!

-Want to add follower tracking to your dashboard? Upgrade now to the Broadcaster plan!

-We discuss “How To Be Ready and When You Are Ready for Podcast Advertising”
-Basic tips to help you make your podcast one that is advertising and sponsorship ready.
-Know your audience. Do the best you can to know your audience size along with some general demographic information.
-Publish on a consistent schedule. Shows that have a track record of keeping a regular schedule are more attractive to advertisers. A consistent schedule tells the potential sponsor that you are very likely to deliver your audience.
-Maintain a current media kit. This kit provides a lot of information about your show to people who might want to sponsor you. Include in your media kit:
-Show branding like a header image and/or show photos.
-Description of your show and content.
    -Podcast producers and hosts bios.
-Statistics: Number of episodes, publishing schedule and estimated/actual audience size per episode download number over a 4 week period.
-Basic demographic information on the audience including ages and geographic locations that you can get with a Spreaker Pro account.
-Quotes from reviews or press related to the podcast.
-Information about the types of advertising you are seeking and host read locations in podcast.
-Contact information including the name and phone number of the appropriate person.
-Prepare your audience for advertising. Feel free to let your audience know that you are seeking sponsorship. Someone in the audience may want to sponsor you! Get feedback on the types of advertising they might like to have in your podcast.

I personally prefer internet radio with or without archives. When I think of the word "pod"cast, it makes me think of "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers". 😃

Linda, I am running Levelator on the latest version of Windows 10 right now and it works fine. http://conversationsnetwork.org/levelator

    Linda Irwin
I found another place to down-load Levelator, but it is really old and did not work with Windows 10. 😞

I guess they are no longer in business?

Play a 4 minute clip from the show - I explain my background and how I got started in radio/podcasting

    On the show today:
We discuss the Most Common “New Podcaster Fears and Frustrations”
Then we chat about last week’s “Listener Comments”

Starting a podcast is not always easy, we at Spreaker make it as easy as possible, but even we present frustrations to the process because you must learn how to use the platform. I (Rob) spends a lot of time each week with new podcasters to help them get through these Frustrations and Fears.

Every podcaster has some of these fears and frustrations.. I still have them after 13 years of podcasting.

“Frustrations with learning all the tools and processes needed to start and operate successful podcast”

“What is a “podcast?” Am I one or Not on Spreaker?”

“Is content you only upload to YouTube and Do Live on Facebook a podcast?”

“Is there such a thing as a Live Podcast?”

“I hate it when my volume levels are all over the map in my show”

“I am scared to setup an RSS Feed, is Intimidating”

“I don’t like my voice and cannot listen to it, no one else will like either”

“What is and How do I get quality cover art?

“Scared about doing a podcast and no one listens or friends judge me”

“How do I do mobile on the road recordings and the setup needed?”

    “People will hate my show”

“Scared to learn all that needs to be learned to podcast”

“What will my boss think if he learns I have a podcast?”

    “What microphone should I get?”

“Who and How do I get my show into all the listening platforms?”

“How do I get a Skype caller on my show?”

    Listener Comments:

    Tamara Ford
Great show gentlemen. Alex, I totally agree with you about satellite radio, I'm surprised the services are still alive. I'd NEVER pay for it. I rarely listen to the radio. I stream podcasts on my phone using a few different apps, connected to my car via Bluetooth. I also listen to audiobooks.

    Linda Irwin
I actually up-load everything in 44.1 *.wav so that it will be better when it compresses than if it is double encoded as *.mp3.

    Linda Irwin
I am addicted to coffee, too. 😉

    Linda Irwin
I only listen to area FM radio when we are in the vehicle. If I am inside, I listen to Spreaker.
