  • How to Vote as a Christian - Nov 3 - Twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost
The question of whether Christians must vote is a hotly contested one in
the Christian church; and while there are no explicit commands in Scripture to vote
we are commanded to seek the good of the city in which we dwell. Christians, like
all citizens, are faced with an array of issues to vote for, and the one issue which
must drive the way Christians serve their communities is the preciousness of the
image of God. And Christians must be controlled not by fear, or anger, or worry, but
by the deep conviction that the true Ruler of the world is not any country, or any
leader or political party, but King Jesus himself, who is orchestrating his
sovereign rule over the world until the day when he returns and takes the kingdom
    completely as his own.

  • The Truth Will Set You Free - Oct 27 - Reformation Day
The people Jesus is talking to in John 8 really do believe that they are
free, in spite of the fact that they really are under the thumb of the Roman Empire.
But instead of framing their problem as a purely political problem, Jesus says that
the problem at its root is sinfulness - theirs and others! And unless they are freed
from this sin they will always be slaves. But Jesus has come to join himself to his
people, making them his sons and daughters, and giving them the world as an
inheritance. In other words, Jesus turns us from slaves into sons.

  • The Wrong Way and the Right Way to View Money - Oct 20 - Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost
The book of Ecclesiastes' raw outlook on the fallen human condition sees
the pursuit of money and material goods as an empty waste, a vanity. But then, in
the next breath, it will turn towards the enjoyment of the things money can buy as
genuinely worthwhile. For the writer of Ecclesiastes, the difference in these two
different viewpoints comes down to the view of money the reader takes. Do you see
money as a source of meaning, of purpose, of salvation? Then money will always be
for you a source of darkness, vexation, sickness, and anger. But do you see money as
a gift from the Gift-giving God, one sign among many that he loves us and wants our
happiness, an echo (however obliquely) of His willingness to give Himself to us for
our salvation? Then, for you, money can be a reminder of His goodness and the beauty
of the life He has given to us.

  • Misusing the Law - Oct 13 - Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost
The discussion between Jesus and the rich young man revolves around the
young man's inability to see the Law of God as anything more than a way for humans
to display their goodness or their badness. But Jesus calls him to see the Law,
instead, as a display of the unique and infinite goodness of God. And while this way
of looking at the Law takes us out of the equation, it also has the effect of
separating us from the God we hope our Law-keeping can connect us to. Jesus solves
this problem by calling the young man deeper into God's heart by pointing out that
while humans can't be good, God can - by giving up everything he owns (his own
life!) and giving it to the poor (by saving us from ourselves and from
    destruction!).

  • Better Than the Angels - Oct 6 - Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost
Jesus is better than angels because while they mediated the law to Moses on
Sinai, Jesus has mediated an eternal covenantal relationship between God and his
people. Because of this, in Jesus we are given the privilege to rule and reign over
all things, we are able to experience the power of the Gospel, and we now know what
it means to be the daughters and sons of God.

  • Patience in Hope - Sep 29 - Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost
In James 5:7-11, James calls his readers to practice patience in all
things. The way he motivates us to this patience is by frequently reminding us that
Jesus is coming back and is going to put all things to right. This certainty allows
us to trust Him in hard times, knowing that He is in charge and is certainly going
    to rescue us.

  • Loving the Unlovable - Sep 22 - Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost
We all want to be loved because we deserve it, but none of us can be
deserving enough to earn the kind of love we really crave. So, in spite of our fear
that we can never be truly loved because of our unlovability, Jesus holds on to us,
he identifies with us, and he sacrifices himself in order to rescue us with his
    infinitely deep love.

  • The Untamable Tongue: Blessing or Curse - Sep 15 - Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost
This sermon reflects on James 3:5-10, exploring how the tongue, though
small, has a mighty impact. James underscores the human inability to fully control
the tongue, which He describes as a "restless evil" that can stain the entire body
and set lives ablaze. However, the message of hope emerges and predominates as we
see in Christ's power to redeem us and transform even our speech. It is through the
work of the Holy Spirit that our tongues can be turned from instruments of harm into
tools that proclaim God’s abundant love, truth, and forgiveness.
