  • The Thorn in the Flesh - Jul 7 - Seventh Sunday after Pentecost
    The question, why does God allow me to suffer, has many possible biblical
    answers. The overwhelming answer in Paul's second letter to the Corinthians is that
    our brokenness and weakness makes us rely on the sufficiency of God's grace in
    Jesus, allows the strength of God to take center stage in our own weakness, and
    allows us to boast and praise not about ourselves but about the cross of Jesus.

  • His Mercies Are New Every Morning - Jun 30 - Sixth Sunday after Pentecost
    Have you ever felt consumed by the challenges of life, or that the odds
    were stacked against you? You are not alone. However,in the middle of a book of the
    Bible in which the writer laments the hardship of crushing challenges and the weight
    of God's just judgment, we find these refreshing words that still bring us comfort
    today:
    "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
    his mercies never come to an end;
    they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22-23, ESV)
    Because God is faithful--even when we are unfaithful, and in the worst of
    circumstances, we can say with hope-filled assurance:
    “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
    “therefore I will hope in him.” (Lamentations 3:24, ESV)

  • When Jesus Is Sleeping - Jun 23 - Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
    When Jesus tells his disciples to take him in a boat across the Sea of
    Galilee, and when a massive storm blows up that threatens to sink them, and when
    Jesus falls asleep in the back of the boat and doesn't wake up, his disciples ask if
    he doesn't care that they're all going to drown. But what Jesus knows, and wants
    them to believe as well, is that wherever he is at they are completely safe.

  • New Creation Now - Jun 16 - Fourth Sunday after Pentecost
    Paul's relationship with the Corinthian church had been tense - his
    apostolic authority had been challenged and denied - but Paul did not give up hope
    in either his ministry or in their faith: since Jesus died and rose from the dead
    all those who believe in him, even when struggling and doubting, are part of the new
    creation of God's kingdom.

    Jesus' family thought he was crazy and his opponents accused him of being
    demon-possessed, but Jesus' true followers recognized the inherent logic in his

  • To Love God’s Word - Jun 2 - Second Sunday after Pentecost
    In the reading from Deuteronomy, we focus on the 3rd Commandment: "Remember
    the Sabbath day by keeping it Holy."
    This commandment emphasizes taking a day to rest and dedicate to God, avoiding work
    and secular activities. It serves as a reminder of God's deliverance from slavery,
    paralleling our deliverance from sin through Christ.
    Jesus reiterates this in John 14, where He links loving Him to keeping His
    commandments, not as a burden but as a response to the salvation we have already
    received.

  • The Restoration of the Holy Spirit - May 19 - The Day of Pentecost
    The third of St. James' three pillars is restoration - God's mission to
    restore Glen Carbon for himself. The power behind this massive task is the
    outpouring of the Holy Spirit, who brings Jesus into the midst of his people and
    sends us out under this same power to live and preach the gospel in our town.
    The fruit of the Spirit is not primarily about the Christian's personal and private
    experience, but about the results the Holy Spirit produces in the life of the
    Christian which - when lived out in public - transform the world. The love, joy, and
    peace the world craves but cannot experience in its fallen and rebellious state can
    be had through the gracious power of the loving and restoring Holy Spirit.

  • What Happened at the Ascension of Jesus? - May 12 - Ascension Sunday
    When Jesus ascended to the right hand of his Father, he was given complete
    power and lordship over everything in heaven and earth. Also, through his ascension
    he now "fills all things", so that he is ubiquitously present with his whole church
    on earth. And now, through his ascension, he gives good gifts to his people so that
    we can be empowered to love and serve each other and our community in Jesus'
