  • Healed by the Power of New Creation - Sep 8 - Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Isaiah pictures a world where all mental and psychological diseases have
been done away with and every physical illness and deformity has been cured; a world
where Jesus has turned the desert into a garden and death into life. The arrival of
this world is the hope that brings the future, complete cure for all our problems
    rushing now into the present.

  • The Quality of Self-Sacrificing Love - Aug 25 - Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Paul's classic statement on the heart of marriage in Ephesians 5 can speak
more broadly to how we are called to love not just our spouses but everyone else as
well. The key to understanding how true love works is to recognize that true love
does not respond to someone who is lovable but makes the other lovable, true love
does not demand but earns submission, and true love is self-love to the extent that
    it is self-giving love.

  • Human Sexuality and the World - Aug 18 - Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost
In this third sermon on the Bible's teaching about human sexuality, Aaron
Mueller looks at what Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians about how to relate to the
sexual sin that's prevalent in the world. Paul insists that judging the world for
its sexual sin is his job, not the job of the Christian church. Instead, the church
is to constantly be deeply repentant of its own sin, strive for repentant chastity
in its own personal conduct, and constantly live within the joy of the identity God
has given it in her Passover Lamb, Jesus.

  • Human Sexuality and the Church - Aug 11 - Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost
We fallen humans are born with the propensity to worship God's good gifts
instead of God himself, and this propensity includes our tendency to make an idol
out of his good gift of sexuality. But since this goes against the way he designed
us to be, this type of idolatry manifests itself in foolish thinking, enslaved
thinking, and gnostic thinking. But when we find our identity not in God's good
gifts but in Jesus, we are given a new fresh resurrection-centered and Holy
    Spirit-indwelt life.

  • A Biblical Foundation for Human Sexuality - Aug 4 - Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost
Paul writes 1 Corinthians 5 to address the way the church of Corinth had
neglected to hold accountable a man in the congregation who was having sex with his
stepmother. Paul first points out how this sexual sin had not only violated God's
will in Scripture but also the standards to which the unbelieving Corinthian culture
themselves held. Paul then addresses the deeper problem with their tolerance of this
sexual sin: their pride. And finally Paul points them toward the biblical standard
of God's will, the lordship of Jesus over all creation (including human sexuality),
and the self-sacrificial love of Jesus who became our Passover Lamb to rescue us
    from slavery to all sin.

  • Jesus Walks on Water - Jul 28 - Tenth Sunday after Pentecost
When Jesus' disciples are stuck in the middle of the Sea of Galilee in the
middle of the night, he comes walking on the water to them. The disciples don't
understand what it means because their hearts are hard, but Jesus wants them to see
that he is the true God who makes a path of redemption in the water, he is the true
God who alone deserves worship, and he is the true God who works for those who
    belong to him.

  • The Impossible Meal - Jul 21 - Ninth Sunday after Pentecost
Although Jesus' disciples are hungry and worn out, he commands them to feed
the massive crowd which has gathered to hear his teaching. The disciples are
perplexed by their lack of resources and ability to do this, but Jesus meets the
need by turning a small amount of food into a large amount of food. But when Jesus
does this he also allows and empowers the disciples to deliver the food to the
people. In other words, they keep his command to feed them but only because he
miraculously made the impossible meal himself.

  • Adopted into the Trinity - Jul 14 - Eighth Sunday after Pentecost
The Trinity is not an extraneous Christian doctrine - redemption only works
if the Father, who eternally loves his own Son, chooses to adopt us as his children.
But he doesn't make us his "extra" children, he unites us to Jesus so that we become
just as much his children as Jesus. Then he guarantees this eternal reality by
giving us his Holy Spirit as the down payment for our ultimate realization of this
new family when Jesus returns and makes us completely his own.
