  • What is Perfect Love? - Apr 28 - Fifth Sunday of Easter
The perfect love we have been given in Jesus is able to cast out our fear
of judgment by putting us into a community of forgiven sinners, whose unconditional
love for us is a constant manifestation and reinforcement of God’s infinitely
forgiving love for us in Jesus.

  • Who Are the True Christians? - Apr 21 - Fourth Sunday of Easter
The false teachers John is defending his church against made much of their
own leadership, creating doubt in the minds of her members by causing them to
selfishly look for the locus of their relationship with God inside themselves. But
John draws them back by making much of Jesus' love for them, a love which works in
their own hearts to pull them outside of themselves to love and serve each other,
and find their status before God in his declaration of his love for them.

  • How to Stop Sinning - Apr 14 - Third Sunday of Easter
God wants us to stop sinning, but how can we even begin this impossible
task? John's answer: look to the cross of the crucified Jesus who died to sin for
us, look to the new creation where our destiny as full-formed children of God will
become a reality, and look to our heavenly Father whose deep and forgiving love for
us constantly woo us to himself.

  • Our Sin, Our Savior, and Complete Joy - Apr 7 - Second Sunday of Easter
John's church was attacked from within by teachers who taught that Jesus
was not actually a physical being and that salvation was not about a restored
relationship with God but about secret knowledge of God gained privately by the
enlightened initiated. John attacks this false teaching with the reality of Easter:
the God-man Jesus breaks through the barrier between us and him, revealing the light
of truth to all men, forgiving our sins, and restoring us to a relationship with him
    and each other.

  • The Unexpected Resurrection of Jesus - Mar 31
The women who go to the empty tomb have a plan to anoint Jesus' body, but
they soon realize the main problem with their plan is not merely that the body is
missing but that they had planned to anoint his body in the first place. Today, we
(and the culture) are still frequently surprised by the empty tomb, and once again
must come to grips with the reality that our Savior is an alive Savior, confounding
expectations and bringing back from irrelevance and failure those who trust in him.

The crowd who has just witnessed Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead follow

The new covenant happens when God acts to forgive his people's sins, create
a fresh community of people who have all experienced the power of this new covenant,
and pour out his Holy Spirit into his people's hearts so that his good Law can be
internalized and kept by those who have been united to Jesus' death and

The preacher of Hebrews argues that the ministry of Jesus is far greater
than the ministry of the Old Testament high priests, that Jesus has been chosen by
God to be a priest according to the order of Melchizedek, that he mediates perfectly
between God and humanity, and that by his passionate prayers and requests on our

  • From Death to Life - Mar 13 - Midweek Lent Service
Humans have searched for ways to deal with the reality of death -
everything from medical advances, psychological therapy, and existential fatalism
have been used to try, however unsuccessfully, to deal with the fact that everyone
dies. But when death is seen not as a technical but as a theological problem, we can
be liberated to look to God for mercy, which he freely gives us by grace in his son
Jesus, who rose from the dead creating a path through death and out the other side
    to eternal life.
