The author was working as a veterinarian. She was asked to give a talk about her profession at her daughter’s school. She shared this story with the children.

An ambulance was on its way to pick up a very sick patient when… suddenly out of nowhere a cat runs across the road in front of the speeding ambulance! The driver hits the brakes but unfortunately hit the cat! Thinking quickly, the paramedic jumped out of the ambulance, bundled the cat into the ambulance, and raced to the nearest vet clinic. Will his life be saved?

The anonymous cat was transported by ambulance to the vet clinic. He undergoes veterinary treatment and surgery. He recovers and finds a wonderful new home with the paramedic. 

When the author finished telling the story, she was very surprised by the  reactions of the children. They had all sorts of questions about the procedures used to save the life of the cat, now named St. John by the veterinary staff. They wanted to know how you could become a veterinarian. They were so interested and curious, they inspired the author to write the beautifully illustrated book. Her hope is that by sharing the story of ST. JOHN THE AMBULANCE CAT, young readers will take away three messages:
