When we are unsettled by events in our lives we know that God will be by our side.

Being sent into the wilderness isn't about being punished. Its about being sent to a place: of preparation, of waiting for God, and learning to trust God's timing. Jesus withstands temptation by denying and responding with using scripture.

The commonalities between the gospel reading and the old testament reading for the day were that the people were invited up on the mountain, they obeyed and went, and they stayed as long as God needed them to receive their revelation. Why were they called? It changed them, it gave them important information, and they needed to be equipped for when they came down off the mountain.

Jesus really means what he says about turning the other cheek, etc. Take seriously the teachings of Jesus to love our enemies, etc.

As we continue with the sermon on the mount, Jesus not only cites the ancient law, but adds to it and reinforces how strict we should live our lives. Jesus wanted to have his lessons stick.

Jesus moves his disciples into action when he says that they are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Scripture is a source of authority for Jesus's teachings. We create the change in the world, and the light that that change bring connection, truth, inspiration, and gives power.

To be blessed means to be in Gods' favor, freely given by God, recognition of God's present and knowing God is acting even if it seems like He isn't.
