Splice. Star Trek has a history of tackling questions of scientific ethics. This is familiar territory for Discovery's lead director, Vincenzo Natali, who created the 2009 film, Splice. In the film, two scientists, played by Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody, create a human/animal hybrid, and things get out of hand very quickly. In this episode of Stage Nine, Mike and John take a look at Natali's movie. We discuss what worked for us and what didn't, Natali's strong visual style, and the challenges of creating a sci-fi world. Tomorrow Never Dies.

The recent casting of Michelle Yeoh in Star Trek: Discovery has been applauded by many. The actress is the best known cast member thus far, having appeared in such films as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Sunshine. But her big introduction to American audiences came in 1997 with the James Bond film, Tomorrow Never Dies.

In this episode of Stage Nine, Mike and John are joined by Zach Moore of Standard Orbit, and Lee Hutchison of Earl Grey to look at Yeoh's work in Tomorrow Never Dies. We discuss our first experiences watching the film, Nicholas Meyer's contribution to the script, and what makes Yeoh different from most Bond Girls. In news, we cover the latest on Bryan Fuller's departure from Disco, and preview two other new cast members, Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp.

Darmok Commentary. Before joining the writing staff of Star Trek: Discovery, Joe Menosky wrote 67 episodes of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. Perhaps the most beloved of those is "Darmok." The episode, from TNG Season 5, is about Picard's attempt to communicate with the captain of an alien species which speaks only in metaphor. In this episode of Stage Nine, Mike and John record an audio commentary for "Darmok." We discuss how the episode is representative of Menosky's style, how it holds up on repeated viewings, and how awesome Picard's new jacket is. GCB. Last month, Bryan Fuller stepped back as showrunner of Star Trek: Discovery, handing off the series to his "Number Ones," Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts. But this is not the first writing staff which Berg and Harberts have led. In 2012, the duo executive produced the short-lived ABC series, GCB, a comedy about five women in Dallas high society. In this episode of Stage Nine, John and Mike take a look at GCB. We discuss its similarity to other shows from the era, whether or not it works as satire, and why it failed to find an audience. Mike also relays his first experience riding The Tower of Terror.
