  • Music, AI & American Politics: Inside the Mind of bananasutra

Welcome to the second instalment of my Featured Artist Spotlight, where I sit down with bananasutra, a talented singer-songwriter originally from France who now calls San Francisco home.

Celine and I have a fascinating conversation about what inspires her songwriting, how her experiences growing up in France shaped her musical influences, and her thoughts on the current U.S. political climate. We also dive into the increasingly interesting—and sometimes controversial—world of artificial intelligence in music. Celine opens up about her creative process, how she uses AI as a tool to bring her lyrics to life, and why honesty matters in making music.

We wrap things up with her song “Everybody Knows,” a thoughtful and heartfelt track inspired by the legendary Leonard Cohen. While Cohen’s original takes a more cynical look at the world, Celine offers her own perspective, focusing on compassion, kindness, and the hope that we can find a better way forward.

It’s a great conversation about music, creativity, and finding ways to make sense of a sometimes crazy world.

She speaks openly and honestly about the stalled train underpass, Pitt Meadows’ new tree bylaw, and some of the frustrations she’s experienced when dealing with the provincial and federal governments. It’s an interesting and candid conversation about local politics, the challenges of leadership, and the issues that matter to our community.

  • From Hockey to Afghanistan: An RCMP Officer’s Story of Service, Resilience & Mental Health + SERIFRIAL🎵

An incredible chinwag with a beautiful human being and a true hero, Elliott Lemire

Elliott talks about growing up around hockey and music, and the big influence his father had on his life. His aspirations to become a firefighter, along with his love of Canada’s game, eventually pulled him toward joining the Armed Forces, where he served in Kandahar and helped train the Afghan Army. That desire to serve others and help make the world a better place eventually led him to policing with the RCMP in Powell River.

No apologies. No bullshit. This is as real as it gets.

    Enjoy!

Featured artist spotlight: SERIFRIAL with her song LAST MAY.

Musical mentions to OPNCSKT for the intro, BOMBINSOUND in the commercial, and TIGRIS BLOOM at the end.

  • “I Lost by Two Votes. Now I’m Running Again.”— Jeff Jacobs + SAM ANTIX🎵

Jeff Jacobs is a local, grassroots candidate running for Langley City Council for the third time. In 2022, he came within just two votes of winning a seat. Now, he’s back for another shot, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this is his year!

We talk about what he’s hearing from residents while knocking on doors, the challenges facing Langley City, his vision for safer streets and stronger neighbourhoods, and why he wants to see more community events and live music. We also discuss lowering the voting age to 16 and, in a more personal conversation, Jeff opens up about his own mental health struggles, losing a close friend, and the importance of taking time to heal and leaning on the people around us.

Jeff is one of the most genuine, down-to-earth guys you’ll meet, and it was a pleasure to sit down with him.

Special musical guest: Sam Antix with his song Coin for Leisure. https://on.soundcloud.com/7hZ6vM7uD6KoHM6T02

  • The Legacy of a Rugby Legend & The Road to Greece —-Sean Baron & Donny Valle + OPNCKST🎵

    A Testosterone-Filled Father’s Day Special! 🏉🏀

This Father’s Day, Stand Up brings you a special doubleheader celebrating fatherhood, sports, community, and resilience.

In the first half, I sit down with my friend and coworker Sean Barron to remember his late father, Steve Barron, a passionate rugby player and community leader who dedicated much of his life to helping others. From playing with the Twilighters Rugby Club and building international connections with rugby clubs in Japan to supporting youth sports and school meal programs in Burnaby, Steve left behind an incredible legacy. Sean shares how he’s continuing his father’s work through Barons of Rugby, helping kids and families who might otherwise struggle to afford organized sports.

In the second half, I catch up with Donald Napoleon Val, better known as Donnie, the driving force behind Langley’s Finest basketball team. Fresh off a Division B league championship, Donnie is preparing to take his team to Greece to represent Canada at the FIBA 3-on-3 basketball tournament in Syros. We talk about his lifelong love of basketball, building a strong community, and how the game—and the support of good friends—helped him navigate some difficult times and improve his mental health.

To cap off the show I have a great rock & roll band from Phoenix, Arizona called OPNCSKT. The song is called Black Void. Listen to it loud! 🎸🤘
