We're in the middle of a new season of locally-made Sunday Theatres on TVNZ One - all, as they say, plucked from the nation's headlines. Why Does Love told the story of pop band the Dance Exponents, this week sees Resolve, about Chris Crean who bravely fought the Taranaki gangs (pictured), and next week more crime - the story of the infamous Black Widow.

The country's only gallery committed to craft, design and architecture has a new home, an Auckland warehouse redesigned and kitted out in a 630-thousand dollar makeover. All will be revealed later this week when the new Objectspace gallery on Rose Street in Ponosonby opens its doors. The new not-for-profit gallery's much bigger - all the better to show the work of designers and architects. Lynn Freeman speaks to Objectspace Director Kim Paton, and Chairperson Ben Corban and Managing Director of Design Studio Alt Group.

Philip Temple and Emma Neale have edited Manifesto after receiving around 500 poems from established through to emerging poets. The collection is in four parts: Politics, Rights, Environment and Conflict and the book is published by Otago University Press. They talk to Lynn Freeman about the rich history of political poetry in New Zealand.

Peruvian master weaver Máximo Laura is one of his country's living treasures and his giant works have been shown throughout the world. Using five thousand year old weaving techniques, his designs blend the contemporary with the traditional. Maximo is currently in New Zealand, showing some of his large intensely coloured works and taking workshops to share his skills and philosophy of weaving, as a guest of Creative Fibre NZ. His exhibition Eternal Vision is on at Pataka in Porirua.

Qianna Titore is making history as the youngest filmmaker to have her work accepted into the New Zealand International film festival programme. She was just 16 when she wrote and directed her short film Natalie as part of Script to Screen's Hokianga Film Project writing workshops last year. Eloise Veber produced Natalie and other film professionals also helped out including leading cinematagropher Leon Narbey, and Michael Bennett who worked on the script.

The country's art teachers are about to swap notes on digital media - what's working, and not working for them and their students in our classrooms. Their 2017 conference is being held in Whanganui this week and new technology is the focus. But that doesn't mean there isn't still room for pen, paint and paper in the art curicculum.

Patricia Barker is the latest overseas appointment to the job of Artisitic Director at the Royal New Zealand Ballet company. Before moving into leadership roles she was a dancer for 27 years with roles in many of the great classical ballets and contemporary works, as well as appearing on screen. In recent years Patricia headed both the Detroit based Grand Rapids Ballet Company, and its accompanying school.

Wellington author Tim Corballis imagines a very different 1975 to how we remember it in his new novel Our Future is in the Air. Glimpses into the future, events like 9/11, sees jet air travel and time travel banned. But many New Zealanders are feeling isolated and frustrated and protest movements are growing. It's still possible to travel a few decades into the future, but it's risky. Someone unable to resist the lure of time travel has disappeared and his friends are trying to find him.

Simon Morris talks to Megan Peacock Coyle, the New Zealand co-ordinator of the International Youth Silent Film Festival. Entries close on the 1st of October, and the finals take place in Tauranaga in November.

We do judge books by their covers - so what's grabbing our attention these days? This year's PANZ book design awards are good way to find out what's hot, and what's not, in bookstores and libraries around the country. Last year's PANZ Young Designer of the Year, Anna Egan-Reid, and business commentator Vincent Heeringa are two of the three judges for this years awards.
