For episode 31 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss Season 2 Episode 6 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, The Sound of Thunder. It was written by co-producers Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt, who are said to be the creators of the new Section 31 series, and directed by Douglas Aarniokoski. You may have seen this referred to as The Sounds of Thunder, as all of the outlets had it as Sounds, but when it premiered, it was only a singular Sound. I've already seen several podcasts and YouTubers have it wrong. The Sound of Thunder is correct.
Discussion on The Sound of Thunder begins at 17:50...We begin the podcast with feedback from previous episodes. Then, we finally get into this episode at 17 minutes 50 seconds in.
Fred's Pics and Spoiler Alert! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post. To that end, SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched The Sound of Thunder, you may want to stop reading here!
Another Big One for Saru...A new signal appears over Kaminar, Saru's homeworld. Saru hasn't been back since he left, but since going through the vahar'ai, he has undergone certain changes. Saru doesn't immediately leave the captain's chair when Pike is summoned to the bridge, and later borders on being insubordinate when Pike doesn't choose him for the away team. Burnham diffuses the moment by asking for him to accompany her on the surface.
STDP 031 - Star Trek Discovery S2E6 (13:46) - Burnham de-escalating Saru's outburst
STDP 031 - Star Trek Discovery S2E6 (18:14) - Michael taking Saru's hand
STDP 031 - Star Trek Discovery S2E6 (18:09) - Michael (close-up) on Kaminar beach
Saru and Burnham meet up with the village priest, only to find out that it's Saru's sister, Siranna, who we met during the third Short Trek, The Brightest Star, which was shot at the same time as this episode.
STDP 031 - Star Trek Discovery S2E6 (19:52) - Where have you been all this time?
Contact with the Ba'ul doesn't go very well, as they plan to kill the rest of the Kelpiens if Saru doesn't surrender himself. Saru attempts to beam himself away before Burnham stops him.
STDP 031 - Star Trek Discovery S2E6 (29.47) - Michael pointing a gun at Saru, as he tries to beam himself off the ship and surrender to the Ba'ul.
Yes, we do meet them, but they are never clearly seen. Many commented that the Ba'ul reminded them of Armus, the lifeform from TNG's Skin of Evil that killed Tasha Yar.
STDP 031 - Star Trek Discovery S2E6 (35:45) - A Ba'ul emerging from his pool
STDP 031 - Star Trek Discovery S2E6 (37:21) - Ba'ul
The Red Angel appears to Saru and Siranna on the Ba'ul ship. This time, we see more detail, as it appears to be a female in an advanced space suit.
STDP 031 - Star Trek Discovery S2E6 (47:24) - The Red Angel, seen from inside the Ba'ul stronghold.
We also see Culber in sickbay, as he gets used to his new body. This is an interesting story, and I wish we would have seen a little more of it this episode.
STDP 031 - Star Trek Discovery S2E6 (02:56) - Hugh on a sickbay bed
We both loved the episode, although I'd probably rate it the least best of the six so far. Don't get me wrong. I still loved it, just not as much as some of the others. We'll be back in a week with our next episode. As always, your feedback is essential to this podcast! We'll be having a short feedback deadline most weeks this season, due to scheduling issues. We'll cover more feedback from S2E6 The Sound of Thunder, so do not hesitate to send in your feedback if you miss the deadline. For Star Trek: Discovery S2E7, which is titled Light and Shadows\, the deadline to get in your feedback is Friday, March 1, 2019, at 6 PM Eastern/5 PM Central or 11 PM UTC. You can submit feedback via the GSM Feedback page, Facebook Group, Twitter, you can email startrekgsm at gmail dot com, or call the GSM voicemail at (304) 837-2278 and leave us a message there. Make sure to mention you're calling The Star Trek Discovery Podcast when you call. I'm also podcasting on The Walking Dead. Because of this schedule, we are trying to get our episodes down to a more reasonable podcast length. To help with this, we'd like you to focus on a few key points from the episode, rather than discussing everything about the episode. If submitting a voicemail, please try to keep your calls to 4 minutes or less, with an absolute maximum of 5 minutes. We would like to keep our episodes under 2 hours! Please help with that!

For episode 30 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie is back and we discuss Season 2 Episode 5 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, Saints of Imperfection. It was written by executive story editor Kirsten Beyer, who is said to be one of the creators of the new Picard series, and directed by David Barrett. He previously directed S1E7 Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad.
Fred's Pics!We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post.
Discussion on Saints of Imperfection begins at 18:12...We begin the podcast with feedback from previous episodes, and Ruthie's take on last week's episode, since she was out sick. Then, we finally get into this wonderful episode a little over 18 minutes in.
A very cool looking episode!
From the Section 31 tech, to the partial spore jump, to the beauty of the mycelial network, this episode was beautiful. This show just keeps outdoing itself visually!
STDP 030 - Discovery's Partial Jump
STDP 030 - Bridge In The Network
Taken to the mycelial network to kill a monster, Tilly has yet another tough episode, but one that she comes through in the end with support from her friends. This may be the end of that connection with May, but I have a feeling that those two will meet again. One thing I said during recording was that I didn't feel that the emotional connection between Tilly and May didn't seem earned, but I have rethought that stance. I can see it now.
STDP 030 - Discovery In The Mycelial Network
One of the worst kept secrets in Star Trek history, Culber has returned, although it is a new Culber, reconstituted in the mycelial network. How much of the old Culber is in this new Culber is hard to know, but if you think this is far fetched, remember Star Trek III: The Search for Spock! Is this anymore far fetched than if it was his katra?
STDP 030 - Culber In The Network
We got another long glimpse at what the Section 31 series may be like in this episode. With Georgiou, Tyler, newcomer Leland and (possibly) Admiral Cornwell, who showed up near the end of the episode, we could definitely see those characters in that show. To me, it's looking more and more interesting.
Sparks fly when the Discovery captures Spock's shuttlecraft, only to find that Georgiou is piloting it. We think Pike may put two and two together about Georgiou if he knows where Lorca came from. There were some interesting scenes between Georgiou and Burnham and more interesting actions by the former Mirror Emperor that will keep us guessing. What are her true intentions? We'll have to keep watching to find out!
STDP 030 - Georgiou Hands Up
STDP 030 - Georgiou and Burnham close talking

For episode 29 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie is out sick, but I was able to get emergency guest co-host Wes Huntington from the Minnesota Star Trek Nerd Podcast to fill in, as we discuss Season 2 Episode 4 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, An Obol for Charon. The teleplay was written by producer Alan McElroy (I got his name wrong during the recording - it's Alan, not Adam) & co-executive producer Andrew Colville, the story was written by co-executive producer Jordon Nardino & showrunners Gretchen J. Berg & Aaron Harberts (who were still showrunners at the time). It was directed by Lee Rose. She also directed S1E5 Choose Your Pain.
Fred's Pics!We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post.
Last time on The Star Trek Discovery Podcast! We start this episode with some feedback for our last episode that covered Season 2 Episode 3, titled Point of Light. We did get quite a bit of feedback for last week, but nothing like the previous week!
NOTE: Discussion of S2E4 An Obol for Charon begins at 20:32. A Tough One for Saru...It was a tough episode for Commander Saru. It looked like we would be losing the first and only Kelpien in Starfleet during this episode, and they sold that death. I had myself questioning it. Could they kill him off? Would this be the right time to do that? I knew we see his sister Siranna in the last trailer, but I thought that maybe it could end up being a flashback or a hallucination before death. When it looked like he was going to die, though, he didn't die. He evolved. One of his most problematic traits, his threat ganglia, are gone for good, and he feels like he's never felt before. I loved the Burnham/Saru scenes, showing that the bickering we had seen early on was the behavior of brother and sister. It took a tragedy for them both to admit it to each other, and to themselves. So, what will become of Saru, and the Kelpiens, who were being culled, seemingly as a part of a big lie. Time will tell.
STDP 029 - Saru in Full Makeup
I liked Saru's quarters, by the way. Very idyllic.
STDP 029 - Saru's Quarters
This was also a tough episode for Tilly and looks like the next one will be, too. The blob formerly seen as May has attached itself to Tilly and isn't going to easily let go. Tilly gets a drill to the head to facilitate communications, which had to hurt. At the end of the episode, we see Tilly's been consumed by the blob. For what purpose, we cannot know.
STDP 029 - A Distressed Tilly
Speaking of Tilly, this episode marks the return of Jett Reno, Tig Notaro's character from the season premiere. I had predicted that Stamets and Reno would make a good combination, and I was right! There were some great insults, barbs and comic lines exchanged. I look forward to seeing her again, but WHO IS THE CHIEF ENGINEER, anyway??? With the spores in the air, mushrooms abound and make Stamets and Reno high. Very trippy!
STDP 029 - Engineering is Trippy
Rebecca Romijn makes an appearance as the legendary Number One, from the TOS pilot, "The Cage" and the two-parter, "The Menagerie". It was a short appearance and one that did not yield what many of us thought it would, including me: Her name. That said, it was a good performance by Romijn. We're pretty sure we'll be seeing her again, and if you believe me (Brian), we'll see a lot more of her soon. By the way, you may recall that Number One was one of the people I thought might have taken command of the Discovery at the end of Season 1. The right ship, the wrong officer! :-) I speculate in this episode what Kurtzman and CBS might have planned, and those plans involve her (and some other crew we've either already seen or have been talking about all season long).
STDP 029 - Rebecca Romijn as Number One
There are a few more tweaks to Star Trek canon in this episode, which we can appreciate! What? The holograms caused massive failures on the Enterprise? That's it! Rip'em out!!! We also hear that the current Chief Engineer of the Enterprise, Louvier, is in love with his ship like another engineer of the Enterprise a few years later. We also learn that the entity downloaded 100,000 years of knowledge. Could the Federation still be unraveling those mysteries in the 24th Century? We also see Commander Nhan appear back on the Discovery. Could she end up becoming Chief of Security?
Spot the 47!!!I made a few omissions during this podcast. Most of them I added back in post-production, but one that I didn't was that I left off Spot the 47. Saru says to Burnham that life support is down to 47% in the science lab, at 23:26 of the episode.
STDP 029 - Saru & Burnham in the Science Lab (23:41), just after Saru mentioned that Life Support is at 47%.
STDP 029 - Burnham talking to Saru after he mentioned a 47 (24:00).

For this supersized episode 28 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss Season 2 Episode 3 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, Point of Light. It was written by co-executive producer Andrew Colville (his first writing credit on Discovery, but he's got a long list of shows he's worked on) and directed by executive producer Olatunde Osunsanmi. Unfortunately, his name was mispelled in the credits. See for yourself.
STDP 028 - Osunsanmi Typo
We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post.
Last time on The Star Trek Discovery Podcast! We start this episode with some feedback for our last episode that covered Season 2 Episode 2, titled New Eden. We received more feedback for last week's episode than we have ever gotten for any podcast episode before!
NOTE: Discussion of S2E3 Point of Light begins at 1:04:27. The Search for SpockThe seven signals search reaches a bit of an impasse, but Discovery gets an unexpected visitor from Amanda, Spock and Burnham's mother. She has stolen Spock's medical records.
STDP 028 - Pike, Burnham and Amanda in the new Ready Room
STDP 028 - Pike confers with Burnham and Amanda
What did Burnham do to hurt Spock??? Amanda hears this and decides she must find Spock on her own. It can be interpreted a few ways how to take this point, but it's a powerful moment.
STDP 028 - Amanda and Burnham
The haunting of Tilly by May, which seemed to be a harmless thing in the last episode, has taken a turn to the strange and for the worse. May becomes more insistent and demanding. Tilly appears to lose it on the bridge at the worst time. I loved the sense of humor shown by Pike here, by the way. Mary Wiseman is great as usual in this scene.
STDP 028 - Tilly and May, on the bridge.
Later, we see her confer with her best friend (and still roommate, it seems?) Burnham, who makes her realize she is not going insane. There's some nice work, all the way around.
STDP 028 - Tilly confers with Burnham
We see a pretty amazing scene with Stamets pulling May out of Tilly.
STDP 028 - Stamets pulls May out of Tilly
STDP 028 - Tilly's Gravity Pull
We return to Qo'noS to find Chancellor L'Rell in a fight to keep her position from a challenge from Kol-Sha, leader of the House of Kor (where is Kor?) and father of the deceased General Kol. Torchbearer Tyler is still by her side, but his human side is causing issues for L'Rell.
STDP 028 - Chancellor L'Rell
We learn that L'Rell's keeping a secret from Tyler. Before his transformation, L'Rell became pregnant with Tyler's child. Tyler sees a "baby Voq", as the child has that same translucent skin Voq had.
STDP 028 - Baby Voq
We see an interesting scene with Burnham having a "holographic Skype" session with Tyler. Here are some visuals.
STDP 028 - Holographic Skype scene between Burnham and Tyler
Captain Georgiou is back, only she's not a Captain anymore, and she's not that Georgiou. Yes, it's the former Emperor Georgiou! She's "retired", and a "Starfleet Security Consultant". She makes a spectacular entrance, saving L'Rell and Tyler from certain death at the hands of Kol-Sha.
STDP 028 - Georgiou's spectacular entrance
This episode serves as a kind of a back-door pilot for the new Section 31 show. We get a good look at the tech, uniforms and how they work behind the scenes.
STDP 028 - Section 31 - Bridge of their ship
STDP 028 - The Section 31 ship
There are a few tweaks for canon in this episode, which we can appreciate! The Klingons are growing hair again, and are building the D7 battle cruiser, the standard within the Klingon Empire for decades to come. Why does the Enterprise not seem to use holograms? Because Pike's old fashioned! Dumb, yeah, but I loved it nonetheless. We don't see Pike use holograms, and you can assume Kirk follows suit for either the same reason, the Enterprise doesn't have them installed, or there's a security issue that comes to light later.

For episode 27 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss Season 2 Episode 2 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, New Eden. The teleplay is by Vaun Wilmott & Sean Cochran, with story by Akiva Goldsman & Sean Cochran. It was directed by someone who should need no introduction, Jonathan Frakes, who of course played Commander William T. Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation, and is no stranger to directing Star Trek, directed Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection, and a total of 17 episodes of TNG, DS9, VOY and Discovery (including S2E9 later this season).
Fred's Pics!We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post.
Last time on The Star Trek Discovery Podcast! We start this episode with some feedback from our last episode. The talk about the spore drive seemed to hit a nerve. We explain our thoughts about it... or mine, at least, that the spore drive needs to be explained away, especially with respect to what happens with the Voyager a century later. Although I won't detail it here, we go through our thoughts here, and I explain a theory that would explain the spore drive and everything we are seeing so far this season at the end of the episode. If you want to know much, you'll have to listen!
Now THIS is Star Trek! This episode advanced the Red Angel plot while feeling like a classic Star Trek story that we all remember! We start with Burnham showing Pike the drawings made by Spock that predict the seven signals months before they ever appeared.
STDP 027 - Spock's Drawing The source of the next signal appears far away in the Beta Quadrant, 51,450 light years from Discovery's present position. Pike orders use of the spore drive to get there. Like before, when they get there, the signal has gone away, but Discovery finds an M-class planet that we later learn is called Terralysium, which is much like Earth, but with a radioactive asteroid belt. Like many stories before it, the crew finds a human colony broadcasting a signal over 200 years. It appears the Red Angel had brought a group of 200 that were hiding from the bombs in a church during World War III, just before nuclear bombs were about to be dropped on them.
STDP 027 - The Red Angel Church We end up with a "Prime Directive" story (which is called General Order 1 at this point in Federation history) about whether or not the colonists that have settled in New Eden should be told that Earth survived the war and went on to help create the Federation or allow them to evolve their own way without intervention. Unfortunately, the asteroid field is about to fall out of orbit and cause fatal radiation to the inhabitants, and it's up to Discovery, mainly Tilly, to come up with a plan, and the rest of the crew to carry it out.
STDP 027 - A couple of light moments from the episode
So far, Tilly's Short Trek has been the one with the most ties to the season. Her eagerness to do well in the Command Training Program causes her to take unnecessary risks to capture a piece of the asteroid to create an interface to interact with the spore drive.
STDP 027 - Tilly Drilling the Asteroid
STDP 027 - Tilly's Dark Matter Piece of the Asteroid We meet May, who Tilly later figures out is an old friend from Musk Junior High (I incorrectly called it Musk Middle School during the episode) that had passed away five years earlier. I believe May will play a part in this season going forward. Is she in the mycelial network? How did she die?
We love Pike!!! Anson Mount is playing the captain we knew little about, but in a way like we always knew him. What a great presence he has. He seems to understand how to behave in this religious community, and questions whether this is divine intervention or not (at least that would have been how the people saw it). I thought he was great in this episode, as we get to know this honorable and honest captain, about a 180 from Lorca! He seems to be settling in nicely, including a new ready room.
STDP 027 - Pike is settling in nicely!
