Secrets poorly kept: Revealed! Wade's been ill, so any fighting in this episode could be fatal. Can the podcast pull it off? Tyler and Michael's relationship takes a turn. What did we like in this episode, what were we glad to finally get to, and just how might we have made this episode better? Lots to discuss. Give us a call and join in on the discussion later in the week! 917 408 3898

Voicemails and more thoughts on "Despite Yourself"! We've had a few days to cool down, and reflect a bit on that shocking twist in the last episode. 9:41 Eric from Pennsylvania (@aerialbass) agrees with Wade, in that he can't decypher what Hugh and James want from the show. Hugh and James reiterate what they think Discovery's problems are, and how your hosts can better talk about the show is discussed. This goes on for a while.
39:35 Lane, who is definitely a real person, shares his worries about the tone of the show and who the "New Redshirts" might be.
Is there room for the tone to get lighter and trend more towards Star Trek Ideals? James and Hugh disagree on what's possible for some of the characters.
Wade is assembling his army to tell James and Hugh they are wrong! Let us know what you think by giving us a call at

Chapter 2 Begins! Can we begin anew? We're finally in the Mirror Universe, and a few of the plot bombs have finally gone off. With the Discovery crew is in a setting even more unfamiliar to us than the "Prime" universe will we finally be able to sit back and enjoy the show?
But wait! Are there any characters left to care about at the end of this episode? There was some fun to be had, even as things get more grimdark than ever in a galaxy full of murderers.

WILL WE?
What if… https://twitter.com/karterhol/status/931197711625412608
What mysteries will be explained, and which were done intentionally enough that we can expect them to be?
Will the Stamets mirror scene ever be explained? Opinions differ.
Tom from Cleveland has a fan theory of his own regarding the podcast…
Lane has a bone to pick with James
We argue Auteur theory. Who is to take credit/blame?
JR calls to "take Wade's side" and stand up for the show, but has some critiques…
Willow calls to let us know what she likes about the show, and hey, it's not Voyager. So there's that.
What Game of Thrones actually does that things trying to "be Game of Thrones in ___" don't.
Why does "modernize" always mean "make it darker"?

and do all the stuff.
We start off with some puerile excitement over certain… reveals in this episode…
And then get into fights over whether this was a good episode or whether this is a good series and whether we can have one without the other. Just because it's not what we want, can we still enjoy this show?
It would seem the answer varies according to the viewer…

What is the dumbest thing?
Kristin from Toronto corrects a mistake, and also points out the lack of guiding thesis for the show, which other Treks have.
Lane calls up with a Schrodingers box metaphor, since we can't quite know whether not the contents (cat, Cornball, or the show itself) are either dead, banged up and starving, or miraculously healthy until we actually open the dang thing up.
What do we think is going to happen in the Fall finale and beyond?

If you want peace, prepare for War.
We jump right in and decide how we feel about this episode of Star Trek: Discovery.
Wade liked a lot of this one, until he didn't.
Hugh appreciates the pew pew space fight noises.
James... James just doesn't know.
Was this also a "classic Star Trek" trope of an episode? Were parts of the A plot at least? Just how good do we think the Klingon plot is? [not very].
Later we try to elucidate different ways or approaches to enjoying a show. No, we're not going to say mystery box, but…
Just what does this show want to be, what its trying to be, and what it actually is [to us]?

Here's that Lost podcast we referenced! (https://rulesofacquisitionpodcast.podbean.com/e/spinoff-lost-explained-part-1/)
The most recent episode of Star Trek Discovery felt more like "Star Trek" to a lot of fans, but what exactly does that mean?
Can a show fill our desire for Trek while being worse than better shows that that don't scratch that itch? We explore our issues with Discovery and take a couple of your calls.
A few thoughts about Rainn Wilson Mudd, who is fine, but what if Matt Berry was Mudd?
Lane clarifies his feelings and resents us for making him defend the show.
So this felt "Star Trek"? Is Star Trek a format of show that DS9 is the exception to? What is necessary to do a different kind of show that still feels like Trek?
What is this show anyway? Stefan really would like an answer.
What is the arc of this first season so far?
Is Michael a virgin, and does it even matter?
How DO other folks feel about the show, inside and outside the fandom? Orville wars? We break down the numbers. What does the gross side of the internet think about things?
Big reveals are coming! Or are they? Will we believe them?

Time loop shenanigans!
Is this the most "Star Trek" episode of Star Trek: Discovery so far?
Harry Mudd returns with some quips and some humor and the urge to brutally murder Lorca over and over again with as many ways to disintegrate a guy as you can make a gun out of (and one transporter trick).
How will they break the time loop and save the day? Why with the power of love of course, as a loopy Stamets "Doc Brown"s to the rescue by teaching Burnham how to talk to a boy.
We don't fight with each other too much in this one! We're too busy rolling our eyes to a party in the future they will remember Haiti's greatest humanitarian's contributions to music and some of the more flimsy plot machinations. But hey, we're all in for the next episode of "Galaxy Fight"!

Did we forget anything?
Is Star Trek Discover trying to provoke us?
We take your messages and see how we feel about this episode after sitting with it a few days.
Tom remarks on how big the bridge is.
Stefan is a little confused about Burnham's parents. Actually we are too. Is this show "um, actually"-ing and daring us to get upset over canon? Why not ... you know, just not go there?
Lane defends the show against the critiques we made earlier. Wade agrees but Hugh and James defend their hatred for the episode. What happens when Jason Isaacs gives you whiskey?
Eric has his own Lorca theory/prediction. What about the Cornwell/Lethe/Dagger of the Mind theory? Why is the show obsessed with rehashing TOS instead of working with what we know from the TNG era?
Carly agrees with James on how much she's disliking the show, but hey, it's Star Trek so we're still watching it. What about the rest of those paying for the app?
Kristin is trying to hold out hope for the show, and brings up a "rule of three" that CSI relies on to... not the greatest effect.
Is "Transformer directing" ruining this? Who should be brought on as showrunner for season 2? James has an inspired choice!
