Starlight Thursdays Episode 132 featuring BK Love with a Burning Man inspired mix.

When people ask me “What’s Burning Man?” … like many others Burners I answer similarly….. first off 2022 was my first burn. I’ve been asking the same questions many others who haven’t been, ask. It’s a tough question to answer. It’s like asking “what’s New York City?” Like any other place you just have to experience it for yourself. Some of those experiences are predictable. I was warned not to make a bunch of plans, they wouldn’t happen, so what’s the point? I made a few plans nonetheless. One of which was to DJ a set at the camp I was staying at FunkyTown. Also to record that set and share it here. It was around 11am Wednesday when I woke to the sound of my alarm. I popped out the van grabbing my toothbrush along the way. As I brushed my teeth I took a walk through camp to catch up on what the vibe was. Full on dust storm. Wind was blowing shade sails up and down as clouds of dust whited out everything once seen on the outskirts of camp. Our sound system was bumping nonetheless. A few with true grit we’re enjoying the beat and dramatic atmosphere. I plugged in hit record and embraced the chaos. One of my friends GRUV42 appeared out of the dust to catch my set. It’s hard to express the gratitude I experienced. As a DJ it’s hard not to fantasize about what your next set is going to be like. Especially your first set at burning man. The last thing you want is ferocious weather. Embrace the chaos.

My selection and mixing slowly became one with my surroundings as I lost myself in the music. The recording embraced the chaos as well. It recorded through a mic instead of through the system and came out very hollow and distant sounding. So I pulled up the tracks from that set and recorded a mix in the studio. This recorded instantly takes me back to the dust to a moment I got to share with amazing friends and wild weather.

This is a post-recording of a live mix I played at Drum & Bass Nite _1 in Missoula. I was inspired to organize a DnB focused event after going to Denver last year to see Noisa play their final tour. Being in that gigantic room absolutely packed with DnB heads was a communal and connecting experience. Much later on, I met another DJ named Pandaura at a party in a quarry. We got to geeking out about DnB and it all fell into place for me – how many more of us are there in Montana? So I organized the DnB thing to lure the DnB heads, and crafted a mix that I’m quite proud of. I invite you to enjoy its re-creation. :3

His name popped up on our radar by request of the community. I personally couldn’t wait to hear to hear him mix, so I reached out and The Plant Daddy delivered this rad mix and a little interview.

Can you tell us few words about your mix?

This was a mix I made for a dance party I Djed at Suite Two! It was for a plant party they put on, and it was incredible! Ripped some nasty tech house alongside some fun house groovers. I hope everyone enjoys!

Starlight Thursdays Episode 129 Featuring Kris Moon.

This mix was recorded live at Hendawg’s birthday party in the Cymatic event center. It's always a pleasure to get an exclusive mix from one of the longest running resident DJs in the state. You can find him entertaining the dance floor at The Badlander and more recently at The Legacy Lounge during after hours parties his been curating.

Roughly 12 years Pandaura set his sights on DJing. Originally from Helena MT, now residing in Missoula. He’s been playing tons of parties over the years and has developed a style and sound that I personally admire and tune into whenever I get the chance. He’s put together a fantastic Deep House mix for us and a little Q and A.

Why did you get into it? The first reason I ever mixed two songs together was because I was really getting into/discovering house music, specifically Kaskade’s first couple albums, and I wanted to listen to my favorite songs without the intro and outro, so I pirated virtual DJ and started mixing with a mouse and keyboard and recording them for myself.  I knew like two people who even knew what house music was at the time, one of whom was my brother Beav, I showed him some of my mini mixes and he said “you know there’s parties out in the forest where people DJ and dance to this stuff right?” Rest is history.

What events have you played? My first show ever was at the Broadway Bar with like 6 people there (who were all involved with the show).  I had what you could call a residency with my music crew’s monthly show at the Badlander called Foxxy Friday, it went for 5 or 6 years in a row.  I’ve played at Burning Man both years I’ve gone (2012, 2022).  I played at Love Your Mother Earth out at Ryan Creek Meadows before that got shut down.  Many Shines, Pirate Party, Fairy Tale, Neon Forest (I think that’s what it was called? The first one was my first festival DJ performance), Forest Creatures the past two years.  DAT was a really memorable/special event, I did not play all of them but some.  Opened for Absolutely once, I’ll House You, Travis’s Monday local DJ thing that used to be at the Palace, Queer Rodeo (part of pride in Helena).  Various shows in Bozeman at the Zebra and Colonel Blacks (can’t remember what the events were called).  Funk Yer Burn at the Quarry.  Several Disco Blood Baths.  I’m sure I’m missing some haha.

What inspires you? Friends and family, hardship, friendship, love, creativity, music, art, and advocacy.

Please tell us a little bit about this mix?

This was a one-shot, unplanned, impromptu mix.  BK asked if I wanted to do a mix for the series and that night I just hit record messing around and it turned out great to me.  There’s imperfections for sure, but I was also taking way more risks than if I sat down and curated/planned a mix.  To me it feels way more alive than my planned mixes.

Starlight Thursdays 127. We have a very special mix for you this week. Our very own Gruv42 put together a mix that a lot of us DJs and Producers dream about. A 100% original mix, meaning she produced all these tracks and mixed them in a DJ set. I personally would consider this a crowing achievement, especially being that the mix Is really good and the individual tracks are amazing as well.

I had a goal at the beginning of this summer to create a mix of all original tunes. The summer kind of got away from me, but fortunately, Starlight Reunion gave me a reason to revisit this idea and make it happen (I made it on September 20th, so still technically summer, right?)! This mix of 18 original tunes spans about 70 minutes. It’s a little different mixing my own tunes - I don’t like to mess with them quite as much as I would someone else’s music, I just like them the way I wrote them. Some of these tunes have been released, some are tunes that I’m still tweaking for release and some will probably only ever be played by me (unless you ask me for a copy). Lately, I’ve really enjoyed writing songs that have half time components and some of those really wubby sounds that make bass music so incredible. I’ve been getting better and better at bringing the bass and creating space for all of the elements in each track. These tunes have been written over the course of the past year and together, they represent my journey to relearn production software and updated production techniques after a very long break from making music. For me, progress is the most important part. I am always learning, always getting better. I hope you enjoy these tunes, straight from my heart. This is absolutely me in audio form.

Starlight Thursdays Episode 126. Featuring one of our all time faves Carr Tell! If you haven’t already noticed Carr Tell has a knack for changing it up… House, Techno, Breaks…. In this mix he showers us with the beauty of Indy Dance.

With summer coming to an end I wanted to slow it down and play some tunes I’m sure everyone will be grooving and shaking to. Just like we all know we want to do one more time before the cold weather turns.

Both of these Starlight Reunion artists pack a punch in the dj booth. Paired up as a duo they move the dance floor with a culmination of Latin, Afro, deep house, and melodic techno.

Going B2B with CMO always makes for a great time and fun set. Our different styles and taste in music makes the experience new and interesting for me every time. There’s something about having your close friend right there doing inspirational things with you, dancing and sharing music. Finding ways to make these different tracks mesh well on the fly is so enjoyable. I think we’ve been doing back to back’s for a while now. It’s become our go to for Zen Medicine neighborhood gatherings and random pop ups in the Senvion… it’s just more fun!

My favorite thing about Forest Creatures is the unexpected, an art installation in the trees, a costumed dancer ghosting in out of the darkness, the look of someone walking into the meadow for the first time, a live electronic set that draws hundreds to a stage as night falls, a late night chef that feeds the tribe. I love that feeling of raw, true, honest, genuine unexpected beauty.

Getting the chance to play a set with BKLove is one of those things. Always unplanned and totally freestyle, it usually starts with one of us calling the other person up on stage, then it is suddenly two hours later, a dancefloor is full of smiling sweaty people and you have bacon grease on your shirt. It doesn't get better. I have shared the stage with so many musicians, and BKlove is one of the most genuine, natural, honest, humble and creative artists I have encountered. Thanks, my brother, for reminding me of how important art is.

BRKN VSN (formerly VSN) has been mixing music for under a year. Getting her start in November 21. She’s played house parties, a few club/bar sets here and there as well as Tickle my Fancy. Montana born and based, she’s catching the eye and ear of underground party goers.

Why did you get into it?

To share my feelings in a healthy way. And to try to connect to those around me in a new way.

What inspires you?

My loved ones. Nature. Peaceful conversations. Memories. And expanding the mind from normal. Sometimes just being silly. Or catching a vibe. Whatever it is, it's a part of me that just comes out. That feeling of release. It's what really keeps me going in my arts.

What genres are in your mix?

Bass, dubstep, experimental, electronic, lofi.

A few words about your mix?

I used to download music before I even started mixing. So my sound was all over at first. Overthinking everything I did. This was my second mix settling into a sound direction I'd like to go. In my other mixes you'll hear accents of latin, or old school hip hop. I definitely love throwbacks from my youth. Even DNB and bass house. This one focused on lofi and current pop culture..in a deep low tempo way. No matter what it is I just love a good bass though. This one really leans into it.

Who are some of the artists in your mix?

Kirbybright provided the lofi vibes. Along with smith. a majority of these artists I just discovered however. So that's all I can tell you from memory haha

Anything else you want us to know?

The hardest lesson I've learned in the last 8 months. “Don't overthink it”
