Starlight Thursdays Episode 151

Featuring BRKN VSN recorded live at Suite Two for a benefit party raising funds for Blue Mountain Clinic. This is the 4th BRKN VSN mix in the series and my favorite one yet. I’ve appreciated each one she’s sent us and listing to them all, I got to say, to me this mix is a testament to who she is as an artist and how far she’s come. I dig the gradual build up and genre bending peak moments as well as the ear opening selection.

Starlight Thursdays Episode 150 featuring Brassica (Chandra Brown) comes from Alaska but dreams of the Playa. She and her brother, Bear, grew up playing brass and bass instruments, exploring the depths of Northern winters, and growing State-Fair-prize-winning zucchini beneath the Midnight Sun. Her music celebrates the deep roots and brilliant progenitors of house and disco, and traverses the space between then and now. She has a Widespread Panic tattoo on her shin, but no one should ever hold that against her.

Starlight Thursdays Episode 149 featuring HNNH.

We’re always stoked to get a visit from HNNH. They constantly pack a punch out the sound system with their wide range of eclectic music and seamless mixing style. Whether at the club, house party, festival or burning man they bring the vibe. I personally love their stage presence and the connection they have with the dancers. I’ve seen HNNH hypnotize the crowd into a swaying groove to full on jumping hands in the air time after time.

This was their first time at Suit Two. If you’re not familiar with the space, it’s a Missoula basement art spot in a big old warehouse. There’s often parties and art shows hosted by Mark Myriad featuring a huge variety of local talent. It’s definitely worth checking out. This particular event was a fundraiser for blue mountain clinic in Missoula which provides abortion and gender affirming care, at a time when access to these services are under attack. HNNH reached out and invited me to come and record their set. Really glad I did and appreciate the invite. Capturing live recordings from parties are always great and it’s amazing how well they take us back to that moment. In this case dancing with a bunch of familiar faces, close friends and the chance to get to know some rad people I hadn’t met before. I love that these parties have a way of bringing us together. A shared moment of dance, an inspiring conversation on the couch, bumping into your friends for a smoke… HNNH knows this environment very well and has often set the soundtrack of my evening in a direction I truly appreciate.

Starlight Thursdays Episode 148 featuring a freshly recorded House mix by Born aGreen. He’s been kicking it behind the decks for the last year. I had the pleasure of hearing his sound at Neon Night and found it super danceable, housey and fun. If you haven’t heard of Born aGreen perhaps you’ll recall a Cowboy with a green hat and beard, probably green vest and pants at the parties… this is the sound of our Green Cowboy.

He followed his brother DJ Chachi into the depths of the party scene and found a long term home for him to find comfort in. He got inspired to get into DJing after years of attending Burning Man and a ton of local Montana festivals. If you haven’t figured it out already, his favorite color is green.

Starlight Thursdays Episode 147 featuring ATMOS BLUE. We’re so stoked to have him in the series for the first time. He’s been DJing for around a year and has performed at The Furnace, Squish, and more. Originally from Santa Cruz and producing music for 5 years bringing the House, deep house, some techno, funk, and disco vibes. Packed with tracks from Don Carlos, Thomas Crown, DJ Deeon, and DJ DAN.

Starlight Thursdays Episode 146 featuring GETDOWN, Back again with some different sounds in his “RUSHMOOMS” mix.

I'm really enjoying this new organic house sound these days. Fun, intricate, and easy on the ears with an uplifting vibe from Be Svendsen, Serious Dancers, dreamAwken, and others. I methodically and slowly build this set into some of my more party time indie house tracks from the likes of Organisim, Far&High, Alt Control, and others. It's a longer recording but worth the investment. Enjoy!

Starlight Thursdays Episode 144 featuring BK Love with A live recording from Neon Night

I believe house parties are the staple of the electronic music scene in Montana.

Outside of our venues and mountain parties, often hidden out of sight from the public view, small sound systems bump providing all that’s needed for a living room dance session. These are my roots. If I had to guess there your roots too and perhaps the birthplace of party culture in general. Inside the comfort of home we explore the elements and fundamentals that make up the foundation for large scale gatherings. We engage in conversations that sometimes require a intimate space to explore. We connect with one another often building deeper relationships.

It’s at these kind of parties I feel extra comfortable and inspired to be experimental with mixing music. It’s a treat to feel like there’s no pressure, to let go in the moment, explore the tracks and gear. I find myself getting pretty lost sonically. Layering track after track, looping and bending sounds with fxs, finding new ways to make transitions and selecting on the fly.

This recording is from Neon Night. A house party by the newly formed crew “Mega Camp.” Behind the helm of the collective you have Angela, Juan and John often sharing their space and philosophy with the intent on having a great time. I think it was really successful. Lots of black lights, UV Reactive tapestries, comfortable cozy places to chill and a floor to bust a move. Delicious snacks and consistent PLURR vibes… Ah… I’m still glowing. They set the stage for beautiful conversations and a sense of togetherness that just leaves me feeling pretty warm and fuzzy.

Being in a safe place where you're loved, accepted and appreciated truly brings out the extrovert in you that you didn't know existed. Starlight Thursdays Episode 143 Featuring Buddah with this epic Melodic Techno Mix!

Based in Bozeman, MT and being influenced from 90’s hip hop and reggae, Buddah has persisted as a leading purveyor of authentic bass weight for nearly a decade and has received high acclaim within the scene for his duo sets with Forrest on Subtle Radio based in London, UK. In addition, Buddah has been known for sharing his tastes in the lighter sounds of house/techno.

He’ll be playing Jan. 28th at the Club Zebra in Bozeman, MT with The Living Room, which is a collective of Buddah, Red Velvet, and Forrest. Featuring a special guest DJ from the Fox Den, DMJ.

Starlight Thursdays Episode 142 Featuring Gruv42 with Her Funkin Gruvin Mix! We couldn’t be happier to share this amazing mix with you all. Happy New Year!

When I was a kid (maybe 9 or 10), there was a band that played jazz standards at the beach near my house. This was a group of older people (maybe in their 40s or 50s but they seemed really old at the time) that just really enjoyed playing jazz. They let me stand in as their drummer on occasion and it fueled my love of rhythm and improvisation. I never became a drummer because I just loved melodic things a bit too much, but that drummer will always be a part of me. It’s mixes like this that honor my inner drummer, moving away from the melodic and progressive and just plain embracing some funky, nasty breakbeats.
