Starlight Thursdays Episode 140 welcoming Crank Zapppa back to our air waves with his Return To Breakbeat Mountain Mix! I couldn’t be more stoked to have his sound back in the series. I always dig the vibe he creates.

A few words about the mix-

This mix is heavily inspired by what I would call the “Golden Era” breakbeats.  It was a unique sound around 2000-2010 that we just don’t really hear a lot of anymore.

How long have you been DJing? 

Sporadically for 6-7 years

Why did you get into it? 

I was introduced to the rave scene in Denver 20 years ago and was fortunate to see so many amazing performances by DJs like Sasha and Digweed, the Crystal Method, etc. The vibe was warm and inviting; based on the principles of PLUR - Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect. Before being exposed to electronic music in its various forms, I was (and still am) a hip hop head. Back then everyone was touring through Colorado so seeing my favorite artists live cemented my love for beats. Those club and warehouse experiences as a partygoer, along with underground hip hop, formed my desire to DJ one day in some way. Then I met Mike Stolin a long time ago here in Missoula, I owe a lot to him as he had the equipment, skill, and patience to teach me how to beatmatch and mix. 

What events have you played? 

I played the first Forest Creatures with you folks, and played there this year… I played the Badlander a few times for the defunct I’ll House You and Drop Culture nights. I’ve also played at Suite 2 a few times for the house music night there. 

Where are you from? 

I’m from a bunch of small towns in Wyoming and Colorado.

What inspires you? 

New music of many genres, snowboard and skateboard videos new and old, the outdoor world we live in, the strength and resilience of my beautiful partner, incredible sound designs and scores of films, and people that are unapologetically themselves. 

What genres are in your mix? 

A bunch of house… Some jackin house, tech house, afrobeats, and one old school dance track from the late 90s. 

Can you tell us few words about your mix? 

It’s a little raw but there are some cool tracks in there, especially some of the afrobeats and world stuff from The Deepshakerz. I dug most of these up a few months ago. It intros with an old Four Tet tune that just has so many cool sounds in it… it’s not a house track but I love it, so why not?

Who are some of the artists in your mix? 

Four Tet, The Deepshakerz, Pancho Piedra, Hyper Go Go, Lucati, Roger Sanchez, Sage Armstrong, Steady Rock, Ricky Bobi, and a cool remix of Childish Gambino’s Redbone by Vin Potéga.

Starlight Thursdays Episode 138 Featuring Lab Grade. We’re super stoked to share this fresh mix with y’all. Lab Grade has been at it for nearly a decade. Between their great live sets, amazing tracks they produce and the recorded mixes they release its no wonder they’ve caught my attention and intrigue as I’m sure he’s capturing yours. I’m really digging his latest work and I’m sure you will too.

Starlight Thursdays Episode 137 Featuring Mixtress Pendula with her warm beats for cold streets! This will be Her 3rd mix in the series and we couldn’t be more stoked to share it with y’all. This nearly two hour recording is full of tracks by Oliver Tree, Valentino Khan, Sam Smith, David Guetta, Tiesto, Apollonia 6, Jack Harlow, and a ridiculous number of other artists, packed with that Mixtress Pendula style we love so much!

I love blending music, presenting music, and music in general. This is a warmer softer mix. It's meant to make you move at a party or get together and remind you of good times and heartfelt emotions.

Starlight Thursdays Episode 132 featuring BK Love with a Burning Man inspired mix.

When people ask me “What’s Burning Man?” … like many others Burners I answer similarly….. first off 2022 was my first burn. I’ve been asking the same questions many others who haven’t been, ask. It’s a tough question to answer. It’s like asking “what’s New York City?” Like any other place you just have to experience it for yourself. Some of those experiences are predictable. I was warned not to make a bunch of plans, they wouldn’t happen, so what’s the point? I made a few plans nonetheless. One of which was to DJ a set at the camp I was staying at FunkyTown. Also to record that set and share it here. It was around 11am Wednesday when I woke to the sound of my alarm. I popped out the van grabbing my toothbrush along the way. As I brushed my teeth I took a walk through camp to catch up on what the vibe was. Full on dust storm. Wind was blowing shade sails up and down as clouds of dust whited out everything once seen on the outskirts of camp. Our sound system was bumping nonetheless. A few with true grit we’re enjoying the beat and dramatic atmosphere. I plugged in hit record and embraced the chaos. One of my friends GRUV42 appeared out of the dust to catch my set. It’s hard to express the gratitude I experienced. As a DJ it’s hard not to fantasize about what your next set is going to be like. Especially your first set at burning man. The last thing you want is ferocious weather. Embrace the chaos.

My selection and mixing slowly became one with my surroundings as I lost myself in the music. The recording embraced the chaos as well. It recorded through a mic instead of through the system and came out very hollow and distant sounding. So I pulled up the tracks from that set and recorded a mix in the studio. This recorded instantly takes me back to the dust to a moment I got to share with amazing friends and wild weather.
