    Quotes:

    • 1. When it comes to sustainability initiatives,
if you make them accessible they become more sustainable,
Because you have a larger audience.
So, the larger the audiences the more participation is available.- Donna Herrington

      2. I think if we address barriers that exist for people with disabilities,
whether they be physical barriers or attitudinal barriers,
stereotypes that people have of people with disabilities, we're looking at a lack of digital access.
We're looking at a lack of accessible communication. If we start to look at how does someone who cannot hear or
see or walk access my products and services, then you start to think of it in a more inclusive way.- Donna Herrington

      3. As we develop healthier communities, this is going to be so much more sustainable that
everybody is included, everybody feels that they have a role to play, everybody plays their role
and when we all come together amazing things happen.
It's only a win-win for everyone.- Debbie Van Grieken

    Quotes:

    • 1.Participants had a total savings of 940 million kilograms of plastic waste each year. ( plastic free foundation website)
That is mind blowing. Just think if you can contribute to this number to what a big impact that has
on our planet 8.5 out of 10 people made changes that became lasting habits.( plastic free foundation website)
And that's really what needs to happen here.

      2. So why plastic free July? Well, virtually every piece of plastic ever manufactured still exists in some form today.
Single use plastics are not being recycled effectively.
And we're seeing the damaging effects on our environment, especially in our oceans and our wildlife.
This will have catastrophic ramifications. ( Plastic Free Foundation

      3. I love that the campaign really aims to empower us.
And that reassures us that you don't need to strive for zero waste right off the get go.
Because overwhelming us will just create a lot of stress.
And if it's too difficult to sustain, it will make us feel like failures and cause us to give up.
This is the last thing they want. Remember what I always say if you're feeling overwhelmed, start small.

    Quotes:

    • We talk about how for us saying that we're all sustainable and ethically made,
unfortunately that's an an anomaly, you know we would love get to the point one day when this isn’t a feature or nice to have
and that us saying "we verified that all of this people that made this product are paid for a wages",
that should be just a standard, We shouldn't have to make this a big deal that We are making sure that this happen. Alora May

Being sustainable also means being sustainable to us. So, if It’s not gonna work for you, it's not sustainable.
So, you really need to look at your habit and look what you already have. Debbie vanGrieken

So these women that are starting these companies that are helping communities and empowering people around the world are doing it all out of pocket.
They're reinvesting all these funds back into their companies and helping on other people.
So when you support a woman owned company, you are directly supporting their dreams supporting all the good that they're doing within the world- Alora May

We voted with our dollar and our power is in our purchasing power.
So if we're not purchasing those items, they're not going to make them anymore.
So if we're spending all of our times and efforts on zero waste, low waste, sustainable products,
fair trade, that's where they're gonna start putting their efforts which is what needs to happen.

I feel like this small things where all about taking small steps and if every small business,
every medium, large business actually did this thing, we will see a huge impact.

When you look at everything you have, everything is packaged in plastic.
So to think that you've got to replace pretty much everything in your house it's really scary.
So the best way to approach it is just going room by room, product by product, and just start small.
Pick something and find the replacement for it.

What was supposed to be just a bucket list item of hiking an area of Spain with her dad, turned into a thriving business and meeting an important need in the world.  In this episode,  I sit down with  Terri-Lynn Woodhouse who saw a need, knew she could help make a difference, and boldly stepped into it.

Terri-Lynn now runs a successful online and storefront business where she offers sustainable products from many different countries.  But more than that, she provides fair wages to everyone who is involved in the process.  She works closely with the local artisans to make sure they are taken care of.

Terri-Lynn also offers us some advice if we are just starting out on the journey of more sustainable living, from reading labels on the products we buy, to seeing what things we can refill in our house instead of throwing away, and how getting out in our community and asking questions can lead to so much knowledge.

  • Sustainable Swimwear with August Dyrberg

Have you ever been frustrated at the pollution of our oceans, the waste that gets dumped into our beautiful bodies of water?  Well, that’s exactly what happened to August Dyrberg.

An avid adventurer and scuba diver, as August learned about the mass amount of plastic waste in the ocean he decided to do something about it, and thus Marda Swimwear was born.  Using recycled plastic bottles August worked with other experts in the clothing industry to use the bottles to create a luxurious and one-of-a-kind bathing suit.

MARDA is a modern men’s swimwear brand obsessed with creating a better world by using plastic from our oceans and landfills to make premium swim shorts that are made to last. Our philosophy finds the harmony between plastic and design to create highly sustainable swim trunks brought to life with the best in Japanese fabric technology.

August also shares with us what it was like to begin such an arduous task with no background in business, and how he figured out the process and built such a successful business in the process.

    Topics Discussed:

    • Making fabrics from recycled plastic bottles.
    • Going into business without a business background.
    • Making sustainable clothing that is high-end and functional.
    • Ensuring the quality of the product and those making it from start to finish.

  • The Industry of Chocolate with Tye from Seek 4 Fair

Have you ever been having a rough day and you think to yourself, “I could really go for some chocolate.”?  Yeah me too.  But did you know that the chocolate industry as a whole is involved in so much human slavery and trafficking?  That thought kind of takes away the sweetness and leaves a bitter aftertaste.

But there are many fighting to bring fairness and ethical responsibility to this industry.  In this episode, I sit down with Tye of Seek 4 Fair, who is on a mission to change the way the chocolate industry works.  She works diligently to provide chocolate that is made fairly and gives everyone involved in the product creation what they deserve, all the way down to the farmers.

Through her research, Tye offers you access to these ethically made chocolates and works to eliminate poverty from the cocoa communities.  I think you are really going to love this topic as we dive into it.
