The topic of this episode of the Start With A Win podcast is the traits of high-performing leaders and how to incorporate them into your work. Adam will be discussing the first three traits in this episode and the final three traits in the next episode. Be sure to catch both episodes!
The first trait is mindset. Your mindset is made up of your attitude and your values, and this provides you with your leadership foundation. If you have a negative attitude and no articulated values, your foundation will be shaky and destined to fail. However, if you have a can-do attitude, approaching each day as a new opportunity and pivoting when obstacles come your way, you can’t go wrong. This attitude is influenced by your guiding principles or values, the standards of behavior that drive your life and business. It is crucial that you effectively communicate your values and that you have an abundance mentality, rather than being discouraged by difficulties.
Second, Adam discusses emotional intelligence. EQ comes down to how you recognize and leverage the emotions of yourself and others. A big part of this is regulating your own emotions, which Adam breaks down into five parts:
1. Self-awareness – Take notice
2. Self-regulation – Assess and align
3. Motivation – Channel your energy to reach your goals
4. Empathy – Watch for a reaction
5. Social Skills – Communicating and setting expectations
The third trait of high-performing leaders is emotional maturity. This gets into your choice management and being intentional about the things that you will say “yes” or “no” to. Emotional maturity means that you have specific, calculated goals and plans in place. It also means you practice discipline in working towards and reaching those goals. You will seek to fix problems and accept accountability for future decisions, whether they align with your chosen areas of focus.

On this episode of the Start with a Win podcast, our guest is Carl Carter of RE/MAX Elite in North Little Rock, Arkansas, who is also the founder of the Beverly Carter Foundation. Carl’s mother, Beverly, was a realtor who was tragically kidnapped and killed in 2014 during a house showing. After her untimely and violent death, Carl started to share his mother’s story and realized that many other real estate agents had experienced dangerous circumstances or assaults. This led him to start the foundation as a nonprofit to provide resources and education to the real estate industry. Over the past few years, countless individuals have reached out to Carl with their own stories.
Carl and the foundation advocate for policies that will provide agents with safeguards. These policies range from requesting identity verification before taking on a new client, initially meeting in a public place, or scheduling a virtual meeting. When it comes to changes that Carl would like to see in the industry, he points out many leaders are afraid to bring up safety for fear of litigation, but that leaders instigating a safety culture from the top down is crucial to the safety of their agents and clients.

On this episode of the Start With A Win podcast, our guest is Brad McCallum of the McCallum Group in RE/MAX First Calgary. Brad started in renovation and design, but he pivoted about three years ago to get his GED and his real estate license and has never looked back. Entering the Calgary real estate industry, which is comprised of more than 5,000 agents, Brad knew immediately that he needed to find a way to differentiate himself in order to generate leads.
Brad knew that clients expect a high level of service as well as superior value and that he would need high exposure to rise above the other agents in the area. He soon found that publishing video content was the most personal way to connect with prospective clients and gain referrals because of the level of authenticity he was able to provide through this medium. Video provided Brad an avenue for reaching beyond his sphere of influence and to gain followers who became fans, people genuinely excited to work with him who would tell their friends to work with him too.
When it comes to creating the type of content that is engaging and could help drive business your way, Brad recommends that you document your day. He recommends you practice by recording videos on your phone and then watching them back to see how you need to improve and then post the content, pushing past the fear. Know that you have knowledge that needs to be shared and by publishing video content, you are making personal connections to people who feel like they know you before they ever pick up the phone to give you their business. Brad says that the keys to effective videos are to be, "you times two," when it comes to your excitement level, and to commit to learning one new video skill per week. He also recommends posting good content on multiple platforms: Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and LinkedIn, but with different focuses and/or captions based on the audiences.

Our guest on this episode of the Start with a Win podcast is Aaron Walker (“Big A”), Founder and President of Iron Sharpens Iron Mastermind groups. Big A started his first business at age 18 and sold it 9 years later to a Fortune 500 company, essentially setting him up to be retired before most people have even found their careers. In the 42 years since, he has launched 14 businesses and attempted to retire 3 times, all the while participating in mastermind groups.
After his most recent unsuccessful retirement attempt, Aaron was encouraged by the members of his mastermind group, Dave Ramsey in particular, to launch his own coaching platform to help ordinary people become extraordinary. And Iron Sharpens Iron was born. The goal of any mastermind group, but specifically ISI is to buy into a group of unbiased and trusted advisors who can provide encouragement and accountability. This is not a place to come to be comfortable and sip coffee, but rather a battleground intended to eliminate your bad ideas, shape your good ideas, and be spurred on to pursue new ideas. Big A believes that if you are breathing, you belong in a mastermind group. He says that the structure provided in these groups thrives on authenticity and transparency and cultivates a willingness to learn and listen to different perspectives.
When you are looking for a mastermind group to join, Aaron says that it is of utmost importance that you vet and research the leader of the group as well as the stated mission and format of the group before committing to applying or becoming a part of it. Don’t rush into this decision but wait for the group that is the best fit for you and then commit to it fully. If you are interested in starting your own mastermind group, listen to Mastermind Playbook podcast as you walk through the process and you can find out more about the Iron Sharpens Iron Mastermind groups on his website.

This episode of the Start With A Win podcast might as well be a masterclass taught by RE/MAX Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Abby Lee. Abby is an industry leader not only due to her experience and vast knowledge but also because she is not insulated from what other companies are doing. She is constantly learning by watching others and shifting RE/MAX’s approach to fit the market.
Reports have shown that 75% of businesses stopped marketing altogether after the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Meanwhile, a large portion of organizations that continued to market delivered tone-deaf messaging to its audience. Both of these are the wrong responses. RE/MAX’s consumer research early in the pandemic found that people want to hear comforting messages from the brands they support during this time. The goals of marketing have never changed — to differentiate your company and communicate with empathy to your customers. This empathetic communication requires a feedback loop with your customers, finding out how they are doing, what they need from you, and how you can provide them with more value.
When looking at marketing campaigns during the summer of 2020, some businesses are not making use of their feedback loops. They are putting out very tone-deaf messages, focusing solely on sales or getting people into their stores. They say things like “don’t worry,” or do not mention any precautions they are taking to keep customers safe. People want to know, first and foremost, that you are there for them and that we are all going to get through this together, and a great platform to convey this message is video content in the digital space. Everyone is craving a personal connection rather than social distancing, and video is the next best thing to face-to-face interactions.

Gary Vaynerchuk (Gary Vee) has built his personal brand on authenticity and industry knowledge that has brought him unparalleled name recognition and opportunities to share his insights in the business world. It is an honor to have him here on Start With A Win to discuss his perspectives on leadership during a pandemic and beyond.
Gary has been leading by example during COVID-19 when it comes to being present, providing valuable content, and being transparent even in the midst of uncertainty. Many leaders across the industries have backed away from sharing their thoughts publicly or with their internal teams because they just don’t know what they should be saying. However, Gary emphasizes the importance of being visible, being transparent, and being consistent. Even if you feel like you don’t have anything to say, be present, encourage your people to stay safe, and keep up hope. Reaching out for help if they need it is enough for your employees, customers, and other stakeholders to see you as an authentic leader.
A key component of this transparent leadership is emotional intelligence, particularly awareness, empathy, compassion, and humanity. Many leaders have been hesitant to say anything regarding the pandemic or the recent racial justice uprising because they don’t feel like it is their place. However, your followers appreciate contextual messages that tell them how you feel about important topics, and this will likely lead them to become more brand loyal in the future. While Gary recommends LinkedIn as the best platform to garner organic reach that will spur on the most engagement, he points out that every leader should be self-aware enough to choose the platform that will be best for their personality. How do you work best? Which medium is the best host for this method? Choosing the right platform will allow you to be your best self and promote consistency.

In this episode of Start With A Win, Adam is joined by Chris Ronzio, Founder and CEO of Trainual, a software that allows businesses to document their policies and procedures. Chris started his first business – a video production company – when he was 14 years old and sold it a few years later. By that time, they had contracts to produce videos for athletic groups all across the U.S. He was able to manage this business remotely because of his established and articulated processes and systems. After he sold this company, he was asked by several of his friends and colleagues for help with creating and documenting their businesses’ policies and procedures, so he launched a consulting firm that offered this service.
In 2017, Chris realized many people who were contacting him about his consulting services were really interested in the software that had been developed to support the creation of procedures and training practices, which was called Trainual. He transitioned his business to being solely focused on Trainual at that point. The software is now used by over 10,000 clients. Over the years, Chris has found the reason most businesses don’t have documented processes for business operations and training is that they are inconsistent. There is no uniformity in onboarding, continuing education, soft skills training, sales, client communications, follow up, and so on.
Trainual helps business leaders figure out the processes and systems they want to have in place. For example, it helps with documentation and delegation. Delegating to other team members enables them to focus on other projects. It is difficult for everyone to delegate, but if you hire the right people and provide them with the right information, you can empower them to perform. This software can be used for employee onboarding, as well as communicating updates to all staff in real-time. The software is continually being improved based on feedback from its users.
