Next time on State of Belief: Christian nationalism expert Dr. Andrew L. Whitehead is back. The title of his new book, due out later this month, is American Idolatry: How Christian Nationalism Betrays the Gospel and Threatens the Church.

We’ll get into some of the ways he sees this movement, which poses a very serious threat to American democracy, being just as toxic to the ideals it purports to defend and represent – Christianity and organized religion. And I’ll ask him about some of the hopeful expressions of Christianity he offers in this book, stories describing a faithful way forward on this treacherous path.
