Stein Monogastric Nutrition Lab Podcast

Minoy Cristobal is a Master's student in Poultry Science at the University of Illinois and former visiting scholar in the Stein Monogastric Nutrition Lab. In this presentation, he discusses two experiments in which he evaluated the concentrations of digestible and metabolizable energy and digestibility of phosphorus in a new source of high-protein DDGS called ProCap fed to growing pigs.

Carly Rundle, Ph. Dr. Charmaine Espinosa, a post-doctoral research fellow in the Stein Monogastric Nutrition Lab, shares the results of her research on the effect of a feed sweetener and a feed flavor added to diets on average daily feed intake, average daily gain, final body weight, and diarrhea scores in weanling pigs. Carly Rundle, Ph. D. candidate in the Stein Monogastric Nutrition Lab, reviews the effects of supplementation with isoquinoline alkaloids on digestibility of crude protein, amino acids, starch, and acid hydrolyzed ether extract in growing and finishing pigs. Isoquinoline alkaloids are phytogenic compounds with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. They are believed to improve nutrient digestion and absorption by reducing intestinal inflammation and improving intestinal barrier function. Dr. Su A Lee, a recent graduate from the Stein Monogastric Nutrition Lab, talks about how dietary amino acid concentration affects the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids in feed ingredients, and demonstrates that AA SID can be determined in pigs fed diets below, at, or slightly above crude protein requirements without affecting the result. Hannah Bailey, a Ph. D. student in the Stein Monogastric Nutrition Laboratory, discusses an experiment she conducted to determine the protein digestibility corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS) and the digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS) for raw and roasted pistachio nuts fed to growing pigs. Another objective of this study was to assess the effect of roasting on these measurements of protein quality.
