  • STEM Everyday #199 | Project Invent | feat. Connie Liu

    Send us Fan Mail

    Any student can invent.
    Any student can engineer.
Any student can make a difference.

Project Invent is a nonprofit organization that trains high school educators in design thinking, engineering, and entrepreneurship. After their training, educators use their knowledge to empower high school students to invent new technologies for social good.

Project Invent empowers students with the 21st-century skills to succeed individually and impact globally, through invention. Their goal is to create a generation of fearless, compassionate problem solvers.

For example, one of the Project Invent teams invented a belt for a blind man in their community. After hearing about the dangers he faces when walking along the sidewalk, the students created a belt that warned him when we began to veer.

Project Invent founder Connie Liu created Project Invent after using her MIT engineering degree in the classroom. She was recently named to Forbes' 30 Under 30 list of education leaders!

  • STEM Everyday #197 | Code Breaker, Spy Hunter | feat. Laurie Wallmark

    Send us Fan Mail

What if kids, especially girls, really believed they could grow up and be anything? Laurie Wallmark was one of those kids, and so are the women she’s written about.

Laurie is a full-time, award winning children’s book author, and she “loves it.” Some previous jobs she’s held are software engineer, owner of a mail order company (she had a bookstore on the Web before Amazon did!), and computer science professor.

Laurie's latest book CODE BREAKER, SPY HUNTER: HOW ELIZEBETH FRIEDMAN CHANGED THE COURSE OF TWO WORLD WARS tells the exciting story of how a cryptographer helped capture rum runners and break up Nazi spy rings. The back matter shows kids how they can crack the code and exchange secret messages with their friends. Scattered throughout the book's illustrations are hidden messages for kids to find and decode. For those who want to learn more, the back matter also includes a description of how codes and ciphers work, as well as information about cryptography today. Readers will learn how to keep their information safe, whether shopping online, surfing the web, or simply texting.

Her other #WomenInSTEM picture book biographies are:

  • STEM Everyday #196 | Read, Write, Code | feat. Jeremy Keeshin

    Send us Fan Mail

Code is the new literacy. Six hundred years ago, most people couldn’t read. In 1440, the invention of the printing press laid the groundwork for massive increases in literacy and ushered in the modern era. Today, computers and the internet are causing a similar tectonic shift. Reading and writing are foundational skills, and in our digital world, coding is too.
But coding can be intimidating to learn. What is code? Where do you even start?

    In
Read Write Code, Jeremy Keeshin demystifies the world of computers, starting at the beginning to explain the basic building blocks of today’s tech: programming, the internet, data, apps, the cloud, cybersecurity, algorithms, artificial intelligence, and more.
    As CEO and Co-founder of
odeHS, Keeshin has helped teach coding to millions of students over the last decade. Complex concepts are explained in friendly and engaging ways, with interactive examples and practical tips. This book is a must-read for modern educators and anyone who wants to understand why code matters today.

Jeremy Keeshin is the CEO and Co-founder of
CodeHS, the leading coding education platform for schools used by millions of students. He is an expert in computer science education and education technology, and he has visited hundreds of schools all over the world. Prior to starting CodeHS, he taught computer science at Stanford.

  • STEM Everyday #195 | Cybersecurity & STEM Education | feat. Kevin Nolten

    Send us Fan Mail

Cybersecurity is more than just stopping hackers. Adding cybersecurity learning to a classroom can help kids experience more practical hands-on learning and expose them to careers they never dreamed of.

A new report reveals that cybersecurity is a growing issue for K-12 schools around the country, with about 19 bills introduced in 2020 to help schools with issues related to cyber.
With millions of children across the country learning online and schools being a top target of cyber-attacks, now is a critical time for cybersecurity education—for teachers on down to kindergarteners. A recently released benchmark report on the state of cybersecurity education in K-12 schools, shows that less than 50% of students in the U.S. have access to cybersecurity education today.

Kevin Nolten, the director of CYBER.ORG, a cybersecurity workforce development organization, shares why it's vital for K-12 schools to get cybersecurity education in the hands of more teachers and students. He also shares the importance of basic cyber skills for all and how cybersecurity education can fill the growing cybersecurity workforce gap (expected to reach 1.8 million open jobs by 2022). The free resources available on CYBER.ORG are tailored to help any age student learn more about the challenges of cybersecurity.
