  • STEM Everyday #193 | The OurEcho Challenge | feat. Philippe Cousteau Jr. & Stacey Rafalowski of EarthEcho

    Send us Fan Mail

EarthEcho International, the global nonprofit founded on the belief that youth have the power to change our planet, is accepting submissions for the 2021 OurEcho Challenge until April 22, 2021.  The STEM competition is designed to engage young problem solvers in studying, respecting and protecting the diversity of species and ecosystems that make life on earth possible. Teams of middle school students, guided by a teacher or mentor, are challenged to address the decline in biodiversity by identifying threats to natural resources in their communities and developing innovative solutions. The competition is made possible through the support of Aramco Americas. To learn more, please visit ourechochallenge.org.

“During last year’s inaugural OurEcho Challenge we were blown away by the ingenuity, passion and determination of young leaders ready, willing and able to take on the growing global decline of biodiversity,” said Philippe Cousteau, Jr., founder of EarthEcho International. “The Challenge provides students with a platform to turn their love of nature into a plan of action to support the diverse native species and habitats that exist in their own communities and to inspire others to do the same.”

This spring, EarthEcho will select 10 finalist teams to compete for three project grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to turn their ideas into reality.

  • STEM Everyday #189 | Superhero STEM from DC Comics | feat. Shari & Matt Brady

    Send us Fan Mail

Kids love superheroes. They know that superheroes solve big problems, and they want to solve big problems too.  Shari & Matt Brady are super educators who contributed to DC Comic's first STEM themed comic book Flash Facts!

Flash Facts—DC’s newest middle grade graphic novel—takes readers ages 8-12 on 10 thrilling adventures, mixing heroic tales of DC Super Heroes with valuable lessons in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The anthology is curated by Big Bang Theory star, author, and scientist Mayim Bialik, PhD, and is written and drawn by some of the biggest names in middle grade and comics publishing!

A first of its kind for DC, Flash Facts is a unique pairing of STEM, comics, and DC Super Heroes. The book provides a helpful bridge between lessons taught inside the classroom and our everyday lives by demonstrating some of the most kid-approved subjects like virtual reality, 3-D printing, forensics, space and so much more, through iconic DC characters like Batman, the Flash, Supergirl and Cyborg who use STEM as part of their hero identity.

In the age of at-home learning, parents and teachers can feel at ease giving Flash Facts to their aspiring superheroes knowing the book was vetted by a team of educational experts to ensure scientific accuracy. After reading, kids and families can put their newfound STEM knowledge to the test with a collection of fun, super-heroic science experiments at the back of the book.
