The portrayal of Leeds in The Last Kingdom has always interested me, it  seems so sparse. I decided to scour my bookshelves to try and find out  what the land in and around Loidis would have been like as Ragnar The  Fearless arrives on the scene in the 9th Century......according to the  fictional tale The Last Kingdom of course. There are a few minor  spoilers so I would avoid viewing until you have watched the first  episode of the show.

Whilst I struggle to access the material I need in order research my historical stories I have found  some interesting texts that give us a small insight in to life in the Medieval times. This episode all centers around the Byzantine city of Constantinople and contains a siege, a sacking and another sack....of sorts.

Some time after the germanic pagan Ida claimed the kingdoms of Deira and Bernicia from the Brythonic people of the north, the ruling families briefly stopped murdering each other for just enough time for someone to rule in the way their subjects truly deserve.
