  • Loidis - Before The Last Kingdom

The portrayal of Leeds in The Last Kingdom has always interested me, it  seems so sparse. I decided to scour my bookshelves to try and find out  what the land in and around Loidis would have been like as Ragnar The  Fearless arrives on the scene in the 9th Century......according to the  fictional tale The Last Kingdom of course. There are a few minor  spoilers so I would avoid viewing until you have watched the first  episode of the show.

Below are the links mentioned in the video.

  • Lockdown Lounge - Episode 1 Constantinople

Whilst I struggle to access the material I need in order research my historical stories I have found  some interesting texts that give us a small insight in to life in the Medieval times. This episode all centers around the Byzantine city of Constantinople and contains a siege, a sacking and another sack....of sorts.

I hope you are safe and well.

    Enjoy.

The text was taken from A Medieval Miscellany, Selected by Judith Herrin.

  • Grace Darling and the SS Forfarshire

Follow the SS Forfarshire on it's fatal, final voyage from Hull to Dundee and hear of the daring rescue by Grace and William Darling. From old newspaper reports and interviews, I have managed to put together a story which includes details of the deeds and words of the crew and passengers who so often get left out of this tale. .

  • King Alfred of Northumbria

Some time after the germanic pagan Ida claimed the kingdoms of Deira and Bernicia from the Brythonic people of the north, the ruling families briefly stopped murdering each other for just enough time for someone to rule in the way their subjects truly deserve. It's just a shame no one has really heard of him. This is an effort to rectify the situation. He may not be Alfred the Great but he was a Great Alfred.

  • Brunanburh - The Battle by the Humber?

One of the great mysteries in the history of the British Isles is where exactly was the Battle of Brunanburh fought? How can the skeletons, weapons and armour of one of the most almighty battles of all time still elude historians and archaeologists alike?  Despite having no evidence or answers I have decided to wade in to the debate anyway armed with nothing more than an old and interesting source, detailing the histories of the East Riding of Yorkshire. Could this shed new light on an old conundrum? Was the East Riding of Yorkshire really where the great battle took place?

  • Celtic Britain - Deira and the Parisi (Longplay)

A Celtic weapons cache was uncovered dating back to the Roman invasion. This surprising journey in finding out who these people were and what happened to them takes me from the Iron Age to 600 years after Boudicca's revolt.
