I have a book. It's called "Compost Everything," and the author argues that anything could be composted. I mean, theoretically. Actually, of course, you wouldn't want to throw an aluminum can in there. It would take longer than your life to actually go back into the earth. However, almost everything else organic is compostable. And he argues that it's just how long you want to wait. Even a piece of a log you could throw in wood. If you go to the forest, which we did recently, you look around, and you see the tree. A huge tree, lying there long enough, just deteriorates and goes back into the earth. So you can compost anything.

There's only one thing you can't compost: the soul. Because, as Krishna mentions in the second chapter of the Bhagavad-gītā, it's not compostable. You can't cut it, you can't dry it. It can't wither in the wind. Put it in water, it doesn't get wet. It's impervious to material nature. In fact, he mentions in the 13th Chapter, it never mixes, kind of like oil and water. They don't mix together, and air, although it may go into mud, doesn't actually mix with the mud. There are two substances side by side. So the soul is not compostable, and it's not subject to the changes of material nature.

So this is one of the first and much-needed points for souls in this world about what death is. We're in this existential situation where we're not compostable, but everything around us is, and it is constantly getting composted. And so Kṛṣṇa talks about this in the Gitā when he says, "dehi no ‘smin yathā dehe kaumāraṁ yauvanaṁ jarā tathā dehāntara-prāptir dhīras tatra na muhyati," that we're changing. The compostable world is changing around us. It's always changing.

Can somebody look up the word compost? I want to get a clear idea of what it means to compost something. Everything's being composted except for us. We're non-compostabl, if that's a word. And so he says, you can observe how the body we've been given, the present body we have, is going through these constant changes, but we don't change.
