March 10, 2020Matthew 27In Matthew 27 we see Jesus is crucified. This chapter is filled with activity. Judas hangs himself in verses 3-10. Jesus is delivered over to Pilate in verses 1-2 and verses 11-14 In verses 15-23 the crowds choose Barabbas. In verses 24-26 Pilate delivers Jesus to be crucified. In verses 27-31 Jesus is mocked. In verses 32-44 Jesus is crucified. In verses 45-56 Jesus dies. Notice in verses 51-54 we see strange events happen at His death. The temple veil was torn in two, from top to bottom. The temple veil was thick. I believe 4 inches or more. It was 60 feet high and 30 feet wide (ESV Study Bible). This was a big deal. The temple veil separated people from God. But in Jesus’ death we now have access to God. Notice the other events, the earthquake and the people brought back to life. The latter is only recorded in Matthew. It seems that when Jesus died there was a holy dose of resurrection power causing miracles to happen. There are extra-biblical references to strange events happing at this time. They are recorded in 1st century Jewish sources. In verses 57-61 Jesus is buried and in verses 62-66 Matthew records the guard at the tomb....more12minPlay
