It may be flawed, but boy did we quote this movie as tweens. Nora is FIRED up and FURIOUS, Celey loves a sports movie, and Casey loves golf! 

Hoo. Boy. if EVER there was a movie for this podcast. For growing and changing as people and as a society, Shallow Hal is an INTERESTING one. There is so much to say. So much to unpack. We could have done another full hour. Thankfully two gorgeous geniuses--veteran guest Alex Iona and fat actress and fat activist Jen Ponton--joined to help in tackling this one!

Look. You might not like it (you might HATE it) but there's no denying that Baz Luhrmann takes a SWING with this Shakespeare adaptation. Leo made the tweens--and Nora, and Erika--swoon, and Claire Danes seems to be one of the only actors who really knows what the words coming out of her mouth mean. There's a lot to unpack! And yet...it's a tale that's been unpacked for centuries. Is Shakespeare even good?!

For a movie that is kind of riddled with plot holes and just barely makes sense--you can't dig too deep or you'll pull the edgar skin right off--gosh dang it if MIB isn't fun as hell. Will Smith is at his peak charm, Tommy Lee Jones is curmudgeonly in just the right way, and before you realize the nonsense, it's over in 86 minutes! What's NOT to like!?

We. Did. It. The legend, the icon, the absolute FANTASTIC screenplay. Legally Blonde of course still has it, but there is SO much joy to be found in unpacking every inch of this ol' classic. Writer Chrissy Shackelford (Last Week Tonight) joins ACTUAL LAWYER Bram Schumer to get into every bit of this one!

This isn't a UNIQUE take: but DANG Jack Black is so charming. He performs with his WHOLE SELF and if this movie doesn't warm your heart and tap your toes you just may be dead inside. There. We said it. Two wonderful musicians and performers in their own right: Joyah Love Spangler and Patrick Reidy join the ep to really dig into our musical education.

Is it a perfect movie? No. Does it go down like a cool glass of iced tea? Kinda yeah!? Did it raise Celey's brother in his tweens? Wildly yes! Bram Schumer and Nora Wolinsky join in to break down everything from divorcée reinvention, house refurbishing metaphors, and the importance of "the 36-hour boyfriend." Also: some sibling yelling about that time Bram ditched Celey in Germany to go have exactly that secret boyfriend.

Does ALL of it hold up? Not exactly. But does a LOT of it end up being delightfully charming and sweet? You betcha! One of Adam Sandler's better performances if you ask us! Author Laura Hankin joins Celey & Nora to dish about Drew Barrymore, romcoms, whether you can discover you like someone only by kissing them, and cold feet!
