The Highway of Tears is an infamous location where countless Aboriginal women and girls have mysteriously vanished, or have been murdered, along the Prince Rupert to Prince George corridor. The horrors of the highway have, in the past and in present day, continued to haunt the British Columbian population. We have discussed heartbreaking cases from the Highway before, and will continue to in future episodes. The voices of these women need to be heard. Today we discuss not one, but two disappearances linked to the Highway of Tears; two cousins, who left their families heartbroken and without answers.

On Christmas Day 1996, 24-year-old mother-of-two, Joanne Ghostkeeper, had plans to meet her parents in Edmonton, Alberta, for Christmas dinner and to open gifts with her two children, however, she failed to show up. Joanne's parents, Daniel and Mary, became concerned for her welfare, and as a result, police were sent to her apartment on 34th St. Within the apartment, authorities found Joanne's dead body; she had been strangled to death. No arrests or charges have ever been made, and this case remains unsolved.

Ashley Mariah Loring Heavy Runner was a 20-year-old environmental science student from the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, USA, who disappeared in very mysterious circumstances in June 2017. Many rumours started swirling around Browning where Ashley lived, with some theorizing that she vanished following a party she attended, others speculating that an older crowd were involved, though the true circumstances surrounding her vanishing remain unknown. Her family have spent countless days using all the resources possible to find her, but unfortunately, Ashley remains missing to this day.

On June 11th 1994, 16-year-old Ramona Wilson of the Gitxsan First Nation planned on travelling from her home in Smithers, British Columbia, to Hazelton, some 75 kms away, to meet up with her best friend to go to a graduation party, however, Ramona never showed. By the following morning, friends and family became concerned for Ramona's welfare as she failed to return home. A search ensued for the teen, however, tragically, ten months later, her body was found under some trees behind Smithers airport. Foul play is suspected, but unfortunately, her killer has never been brought to justice.

16-year-old Selena Not Afraid, a Native American teen from the Crow and Nakota tribes, living in the Crow Reservation, Montana, USA, disappeared on her way home from a New Years party on January 1st 2020. She was left at a rest stop along I-90 with another woman, the pair having been left behind by four other adults who attended the party who agreed to give them a lift home. For reasons still unclear, Selena took off into a nearby field and walked towards some trees, never to be seen alive again. Her body was found 19 days later in a field less than a mile away from the interstate. Cause of death was determined to be hypothermia, however, some aspects of Selena's case simply don't make sense. A teenage girl doesn't just walk into a field and die. Some suspect that there is more to this case than first meets the eye.

On June 24th 2008, 21-year-old mother of four, Claudette Osborne-Tyo, checked into the Lincoln Motor Hotel located on McPhillips Street in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Whilst there, Claudette met a male trucker who she became scared of after he tried to force himself on her. Claudette managed to flee the motel towards a phone booth located at the intersection of Selkirk Avenue and King Street, where she made a number of desperate phone calls to relatives in the early hours of June 25th, asking them to come and pick her up, but unfortunately, nobody answered. Claudette left a disturbing voice message for one of her sisters which was received three days later, however, this was the last time that she ever made contact with her loved ones.

On June 30th 2002, 21-year-old Lisa Marie Young, an Indigenous woman from Nanaimo, British Columbia, went missing after attending a house party. A man, whom Lisa had just met, offered to drive her to a sandwich shop, only he took Lisa to another house party in an unknown location instead. Lisa called her friend in a panic, asking for him to come and get her because she was told that she wasn’t allowed to leave. Lisa Marie Young has never been seen or heard from again, and nobody has been charged in connection to her disappearance.

On May 31st 2002, 17-year-old Elena Assam-Thunderbird went for a night out in Ottawa, Ontario, with her best friend. During the early hours, the pair met two strange men in Primrose Park, one of whom offered to walk Elena to a nearby bus stop by LeBreton Flats, however, he took advantage of Elena's trusting nature. The following day, the teens body was found in the Ottawa River, having been bludgeoned over the head and sexually assaulted.
