Stop the Killing

WHAT’S GOING TO KILL YOU WORST AND FIRST?

Understanding School Safety and Emergency Response

This episode of Stop the Killing features Chris Joffe, author and the CEO of Joffe Emergency Services, an organization that makes communities safer by providing training and emergency concrete responses for schools in about 34 states. His book, ALL CLEAR, gives important lessons from a decade of managing crises in schools.

He shares insights into the headspace of parents, students, and staff in emergencies and reflects on need for effective communication and preparedness. He also stresses the relevance of making progress rather than denying or downplaying the potential for catastrophe. Moreover, Chris emphasizes the valuable role of first responders in emergencies and the realism behind response times. He leaves the audience with his marathoners approach to take one step at a time when navigating emergencies.

SWATTING THE NEW THREAT

S4E34

Katherine and Sarah discuss the issue of swatting, a criminal harassment tactic of tricking an emergency service into sending a response team to another person's address. Katherine and Sarah discuss how swatting has evolved over the years, moving from school bomb-threat pranks to a more dangerous, sophisticated level, potentially orchestrated internationally. They also highlight how swatting creates a climate of fear and affects perceptions of school safety. The discussion includes various aspects of swatting, such as its categorized actions, examples, motives, tracing strategies, and potential impacts.

OVERALL DYSFUNCTION - VIRGINIA BEACH REPORT

Welcome to the Stop the Killing podcast, where we look into the findings of the Virginia Beach shooting report. On May 31, 2019, a disgruntled employee walked into his workplace and opened fire, killing 12 and injuring 4. There are some unbelievable findings that will leave you floored.

Here are some key takeaways from our review:

• The Virginia Beach shooting was a devastating incident that changed the lives of many families in the city1.
• The shooter used a silencer and high-capacity magazine, which may be among the issues that Virginia lawmakers consider when they meet for a special session on gun control2.
• Independent investigators say they have turned up no clear motive for the mass shooting3.
• A report on the Virginia Beach mass shooting recommends more training for police and a fund for victims5.
