June 21 They're Lying to You About AI (And They're Not Even Wrong)

Everybody keeps telling you the same story. Every time a machine showed up, people panicked, and every time there were more jobs on the other side. The plow. The steam engine. The printing press. They line them up like dominoes and say "see, this always works out."

They're not lying. The pattern is real. But they're betting your future on the assumption that a true pattern still applies, and this time it might not.

In this episode I walk through five lies hiding inside the comfortable AI story:

The jobs lie. Every machine before this one was a tool. A plow doesn't decide what field to plant. AI is not a hammer. It's a candidate to replace the hand that holds the hammer.

The genius lie. They tell you the machine does the thinking and you bring the ideas. Watch Move 37 in AlphaGo's 2016 match against Lee Sedol. The human commentators called it a mistake. It won the game. That was human creativity dying on camera ten years ago.

The access gap. The strongest models are not on a price list. The fence that protected the small operator (you can't be everywhere at once) is coming down. Agents don't sleep, don't quit, don't ask for a raise.

The endgame. The darkest version isn't extinction. It's the museum. A remnant kept safe, comfortable, and completely without point.

The mind changer. The most powerful thing this technology does is not take your job. It changes what you want, one person at a time, in real time. That's not science fiction. That's the feed in your pocket right now.

The one move that's yours, no matter which way this breaks: see the strings. Know the mechanism. Ask the question that breaks the spell. Who pointed this at me, and what do they want?

Connor MacIvor talks about whether the war in the Middle East is behind high mortgage rates. He explains that it is hitting fuel, food and mortgage costs, and buyers are pulling back because they can no longer qualify, not because they have stopped wanting to buy.
He says California prices are seeing 2% and 3% reductions, while Texas and the Midwest are dropping more. Sellers who do not get offers will face price cuts, a delicate spot.
His advice for sellers: price right at market value or a little below, check which homes you compete with, and have your agent pull active lists and notice of default properties, which he sees creeping up.

They pulled Anthropic's Fable 5 model for safety, and it quietly made the locked-up enterprise version look priceless while erasing its only competitor. So here is the question that will not leave me alone: what if the danger is the marketing? In this one I recap the Fable 5 kill switch, the Mythos model that went to the banks, the jailbreak and the Amazon snitch, and the Her movie parallel of a tool people loved getting taken away overnight. Then the bigger idea: the whole "it is so dangerous and so amazing" narrative sells the same way scripted playoffs and if-it-bleeds-it-leads news sell. We also hit the climate-to-AI narrative switch and the railroad and dot-com parallel, where the original investors got crushed and the buyers who picked up the wreckage for pennies on the dollar got rich. Is AI the same, or does intelligence make it compound forever? Nobody knows. I close with where AI actually pays off inside a business: missed calls, dead databases, reviews, and after-hours customer service.
