This is a story about a near tragic event in which has a happy ending and life long bond thanks to Texas high school football. Texas High School Coaches Association
On April 7th in 2005, a young quarterback at Canton Eagle Football by the name of GJ Kinne experienced a life changing moment. He was informed while in class that someone shot his head football coach, his dad, Gary Joe Kinne.
The shooting occurred in the football coaches' office at point blank range. A disgruntled football parent was the shooter. Kinne's dad miraculously & thankfully recovered and returned to the sideline that fall to coach.
Canton experienced one of the best seasons in program history with GJ Kinne as the quarterback. In fact, the Eagles defeated state power Gilmer Buckeyes, coached by Jeff Traylor, in the area round of the state playoffs.
During the off-season, Gary Joe Kinne received a coaching opportunity at his alma mater where played college football, Baylor Football
His son had a tough choice to make. Dad made a call to the only coach he wanted his son to play for, Jeff Traylor.
GJ made the 67 mile trip to Gilmer and moved in with his mom and step dad, transferred, and became the Buckeyes quarterback.
Prior to the Kinne's senior season at Gilmer he was part of the cover of Dave Campbell's Texas Football and ended his high school career as one of the most prolific quarterbacks in Texas high school football history.
Kinne signed with the Texas Longhorns but ended up transferring to Tulsa after his redshirt season in Austin.
After a stellar collegiate career, Kinne bounced around as a pro but was mentored by brilliant offensive minds as coaches.
Kinne launched his coaching career after retiring from football in 2017 and worked with Traylor at SMU and at Arkansas before making coaching stops in Philadelphia, Hawaii, and UCF before landing his 1st head coaching opportunity.
In 2022, Kinne became the head coach of UIW Football and led the Cardinals to the FCS semifinals. Then, the big break. Head coach of FBS program,

Kinne achieved a first in Texas State program history last weekend, the program's 1st win over a power 5 conference program beating Baylor in Waco.
Meanwhile, Jeff Traylor's rise as a college football coach has moved swiftly. After retiring from high school football to accept a spot on Charlie Strong's staff at Texas, Traylor receieved a high honor back in Gilmer, the stadiumw as named after him.
After the Strong era at Texas concluded, he had opportunities at both SMU and Arkansas before earning his 1st head coaching gig at UTSA Football
Traylor has elevated that program since taking over in 2020.
30-wins in three seasons.
Now, he faces his former quarterback in a non-conference game. That former quarterback is like family to Traylor and his family.
