    Review Amazon Rita F.

This thorough book was exhaustive but extremely well-researched. The oft-repeated facts were all there, presented in a most convincing manner by the author, backed up by endless testimony, much of which was either omitted or bridge over by the Commission's interrogators, but brought to light by McLaren. Well-done!

  • Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams by Matthew Walker

    Narrator Steve West

The first sleep book by a leading scientific expert - Professor Matthew Walker, director of UC Berkeley's Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab - reveals his groundbreaking exploration of sleep, explaining how we can harness its transformative power to change our lives for the better.

Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

But an explosion of scientific discoveries in the last 20 years has shed new light on this fundamental aspect of our lives. Now, preeminent neuroscientist and sleep expert Matthew Walker gives us a new understanding of the vital importance of sleep and dreaming. Among so many other things, within the brain, sleep enriches our ability to learn, memorize, and make logical decisions. It recalibrates our emotions, restocks our immune system, fine-tunes our metabolism, and regulates our appetite. Dreaming mollifies painful memories and creates a virtual reality space in which the brain melds past and present knowledge to inspire creativity.

  • Formula The Universal Laws of Success - by Albert-László Barabási

In the bestselling tradition of Malcolm Gladwell, James Gleick, and Nate Silver, prominent professor László Barabási gives us a trailblazing book that promises to transform the very foundations of how our success-obsessed society approaches their professional careers, life pursuits, and long-term goals.

Too often, accomplishment does not equal success. We did the work but didn't get the promotion; we played hard but weren't recognized; we had the idea but didn't get the credit. We convince ourselves that talent combined with a strong work ethic is the key to getting ahead, but also realize that combination often fails to yield results, without any deeper understanding as to why. Recognizing this striking disconnect, the author, along with a team of renowned researchers and some of the most advanced data-crunching systems on the planet, dedicated themselves to one goal: uncovering that ever-elusive link between performance and success.

Now, based on years of academic research, The Formula finally unveils the groundbreaking discoveries of their pioneering study, not only highlighting the scientific and mathematic principles that underpin success but also revolutionizing our understanding of:

Why performance is necessary but not adequate Why "Experts" are often wrong How to assemble a creative team primed for success How to most effectively engage our networks

  • The Evolution of Beauty: How Darwin's Forgotten Theory of Mate Choice Shapes the Animal World - and Us - By Richard O. Prum

A major reimagining of how evolutionary forces work, revealing how mating preferences--what Darwin termed "the taste for the beautiful"--create the extraordinary range of ornament in the animal world.

In the great halls of science, dogma holds that Darwin's theory of natural selection explains every branch on the tree of life: which species thrive, which wither away to extinction, and what features each evolves. But can adaptation by natural selection really account for everything we see in nature? Yale University ornithologist Richard Prum--reviving Darwin's own views--thinks not.

Amazon 5 Star Review - R. James Tobin

Darwin is best known for On the Origin of Species, (1859), which argues that biological evolution is the result of natural selection or survival of the fittest, thus determining future generations. Later Darwinists stressed the genetic basis of this. Darwin is less known for his later book, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Reference to Sex (1971). Even less well known is his 1872 volume, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. Contemporaneous with Darwin was Alfred Russell Wallace, who came to pretty much the same theory of evolution as Darwin in his Origin.

Wallace, and others at the time and since strongly rejected Darwin’s later views about sexual selection. Richard O. Prum has written The Evolution of Beauty in defense of Darwin’s idea of co-evolution from both natural and sexual selection, the outstanding element of which is the female choice in mating. Like Darwin, he writes about both animals, most specifically about certain species of birds, as well as humans, from an avowedly feminist point of view, in contrast to Victorian patriarchal views denying personal autonomy to women.

  • American Indian Fairy Tales (Fiction, Myths, Legends & Short Stories)

Author Henry R. Schoolcraft, William Trowbridge Larned

    Narrator Chip Doc

With no written language, Native Americans living in the Lake Superior region passed their cultural identity down through the generations by way of stories. Far more than mere tales to amuse children, they passed along the collective wisdom of the tribes.

In the 1830s, government Indian Agent and ethnologist Henry R Schoolcraft learned the language of these people and went out to collect and preserve their stories before the tribes disappeared under the westward rush of American civilization. Though these stories were recast as children’s fairy tales in the 1920s, they contain much of the old wisdom of a culture that has largely disappeared.

  • Bad Samaritans - The Myth of Free Trade and the Secret History of Capitalism -by Ha-Joon Chang

One economist has called Ha-Joon Chang "the most exciting thinker our profession has turned out in the past fifteen years." With Bad Samaritans, this provocative scholar bursts into the debate on globalization and economic justice.

Using irreverent wit, an engagingly personal style, and a battery of examples, Chang blasts holes in the "World Is Flat" orthodoxy of Thomas Friedman and other liberal economists who argue that only unfettered capitalism and wide-open international trade can lift struggling nations out of poverty.

On the contrary, Chang shows, today's economic superpowers-from the U.S. to Britain to his native Korea-all attained prosperity by shameless protectionism and government intervention in industry. We have conveniently forgotten this fact, telling ourselves a fairy tale about the magic of free trade and-via our proxies such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and World Trade Organization-ramming policies that suit ourselves down the throat of the developing world.
