  • The Snows of Kilimanjaro" by Ernest Hemingway (Adventure, American Literature)
"It came with a rush; not as a rush of water nor of wind; but of a sudden evil-smelling emptiness. . ."

A flamboyant, hard-drinking, ruthless, and womanizing world adventurer comes face-to-face with the one antagonist he cannot conquer: his own ignoble and imminent death. . . .

Written in 1938, The Snows of Kilimanjaro is a classic distillation of the themes Ernest Hemingway obsessively explored throughout his writing career. When Harry, the central character, goes on safari to "work the fat off his mind," his ambitions are cut short when a terrible accident leaves him facing his ultimate death and weighing the meaning of his life. Hemingway's brilliant prose is given a penetrating and moving reading by Charlton Heston in audio that only deepens in meaning with each listening.

  • The Last of the Mohicans by Cooper, James Fenimore (Adventure)

A Narrative of 1757 is a historical novel written by James Fenimore Cooper in 1826.

It is the second book of the Leatherstocking Tales pentalogy and the best known to contemporary audiences. The Pathfinder, published 14 years later in 1840, is its sequel. The Last of the Mohicans is set in 1757, during the French and Indian War (the North American theater of the Seven Years' War), when France and Great Britain battled for control of North America. During this war, both the French and the British used Native American allies, but the French were particularly dependent, as they were outnumbered in the Northeast frontier areas by the British.

The novel is set primarily in the area of Lake George, New York, detailing the transport of the two daughters of Colonel Munro, Alice, and Cora, to a safe destination at Fort William Henry. Among the caravan guarding the women are the frontiersman Natty Bumppo, Major Duncan Heyward, and the Indians Chingachgook and Uncas, the latter two being the novel's title characters. These characters are sometimes seen as a microcosm of the budding American society, particularly with regard to their racial composition.

  • The New Corporation By Joel Bakan (Business, Politics & Social Sciences)

“A very important book, an arresting study directed to a central issue of the times.” (Noam Chomsky)

From the author of The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power comes this deeply informed and unflinching look at the way corporations have slyly rebranded themselves as socially conscious entities ready to tackle society’s problems, while CEO compensation soars, income inequality is at all-time highs, and democracy sits in a precarious situation.

Over the last decade and a half, business leaders have been calling for a new kind of capitalism. With income inequality soaring, wages stagnating, and a climate crisis escalating, they realized that they had to make social and environmental values the very core of their messaging. There is just one small problem with their new conscientious pitch: corporations are still, first and foremost, concerned with their bottom line.

In lucid and engaging prose, Joel Bakan lays bare a litany of dangerous corporate actions and documents how increasing corporate freedom encroaches on individual liberty and democracy. Through deep research and interviews with both top executives and their sharpest critics, he exposes the inhumanity and destructive force of the current order – profit-driven privatization subverting the public good, business-pressured governments neglecting duties to protect the environment and citizens’ rights, the increasing alienation we experience as every aspect of life has economized, and how the novel Coronavirus pandemic reveals the unjust fault lines of our corporate-led society.
