The left. They wanna be the angry party. They're the ones that come down from the mountain on high, full of righteous anger. They're gonna right all the wrongs. They're going to invoke the French Revolution trilogy of liberty, equality, and fraternity.

And wherever there are restrictions, even legitimate ones, the left calls for liberation and license. There should be never any any restrictions where differences appear. Even if it has to do with talent or effort, the left denounces them as injustice and demands absolute equality. They're always looking for a good revolution to incite or a crisis not to waste. But that's in trouble now.

The angry party image because there is no cause for the left at the moment. They're like a rudderless ship. Can't turn, can only go whichever way the tide's pushing. They're disoriented. They're uninspired.

No motivation. They've gone from being the party of clamor to that of the whining. No more thunder, just some incoherent rants and also, you know, rushing to do things like get arrested. And this lack of direction is a sign that something major has gone amiss. No longer is it just simply a matter of tweaking or framing or remessaging.

The problem here is that the world is transitioning from one historical point to another. The debate has shifted and the left did not shift with it. Which brings us to David Brooks, a New York Times editorial writer who himself shifts from left to right depending on his mood and he describes the current phenomenon as a world shifting political movement affecting both the left and the right. He compares it to the communist revolution, the new deal, the sixties, feminism, the LGBTQ plus revolution and other key movements that marked modernity. He calls this massive shift the global populist movement, which is characterized by general distrust of social structures, government programs, and institutions.

People consider everything to be rigged, corrupt, and malevolent probably because everything seems to be rigged, corrupt, and malevolent. They question everything. They harbor social resentment and they demand something to trust. Now, Brooks thinks that the conservatives took note of this new movement so they began to adapt to it because well, because they needed to. But most rank and file leftist did not get the memo and are clinging to old exhausted models and rhetoric that no longer reflect how things have changed, which is the craziest thing I've ever heard.
