    Publisher's Summary:
Bernie is seriously considering retiring from his life of crime, now that his used bookstore is finally turning a small profit. Then his nasty new landlord raises the rent - by $10,000 a month - and Bernie is hard pressed to resist the temptation to supplement his income. But when a dead body turns up, and an invaluable baseball card collection is missing, who will believe that Bernie had nothing to do with it? Narrator Richard Ferrone's deadpan delivery offers the perfect contrast to Bernie's giddy misadventures. It would be a crime to miss this fabulous performance.

    Sue Grafton fell over laughing!
bad puns, Bernie Rhodenbarr, snarky, amateur sleuth, murder, NYC, law enforcement
I laughed myself silly over the mangling of Sue Grafton titles! Bernie really tried not to go back to burglary, but it happened anyway. And I got to learn more about used book pricing and the insane prices of some vintage baseball cards. The publisher's blurb gives hints and there is no need for spoilers, just enjoy the unraveling of the mystery!
Richard Ferrone continues to be perfect as narrator for this series.
This is my favorite Bernie Rhodenbarr
This is my favorite of this series, not because the mystery is any better -- and let's face it, we really don't read Bernie for the mysteries. I love it because the introduction of Raffles the cat adds a whole new dimension to the characters of Bernie and Carolyn. As well as some really funny bits about cat owners in general and women cat owners in particular!
I read all of the Burglar books a number of years ago, and like many fans of this series, always hoped that Lawrence Block would write at least one more. Now a new one is coming out, so I thought I would listen to them all this time around. Block used to narrate these himself, but I definitely like the new narrator's voice. He does great character voices, which is so important for this series, which is all characters.
    Well done!
This is simply an awesome Series
Would you listen to The Burglar Who Traded Ted Williams again? Why?
Absolutely. It is a great performance
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Bernie, he is funny
What does Richard Ferrone bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Just a great performance hits all of the beats
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It gave me that big a hah! moment
    Any additional comments?
    Great series read them all.
Not bad. A decent rainy day beach read
It's a short book with a somewhat dated (early 1990s) and average storyline. The dialogue is good, but there's a bit too much of it ... it distracts from the story. At the end, the lead character 'Bernie' has everyone in the room and explains/unravels the mystery. It reminded me of an old Agatha Christie book, that stuff just isn't done anymore, and for good reason.
    Very good!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
yes, keeps you intrested all the way.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
    mostly, intresting well ploted
Have you listened to any of Richard Ferrone???s other performances before? How does this one compare?
    yes
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    do not know
    Any additional comments?
I have always liked the authors books!

She forgot to tell him she was getting married?!
Bernie Rodenbarr, bed-and-breakfast, puntastic, snarkfest, murder, amateur sleuth
I'm reading my way through the series in order this time and finding that I missed some. As always, this has me giggling and snurfling my way through the book. The publisher's blurb gives hints and there is no need for spoilers, but there is so much more to the fun and mayhem. Simple adjustments for inflation and telecommunications make this a timely tale instead of a historical one,so locate a copy and enjoy!
Once again Richard Ferrone gives an excellent tongue in cheek interpretation of the characters and their awful puns and snarks!
    Love that burglar
Always terrific stories. bernie is great and Richard Ferrone is an exceptional generator.
    Please give us more Bernie
    Not Bernie's Best
What did you like best about The Burglar in the Library? What did you like least?
I liked the English house setting. I liked all the book talk. I thought the book was a bit tedious.
Would you recommend The Burglar in the Library to your friends? Why or why not?
I would recommend the early Burglar books.
Would you be willing to try another one of Richard Ferrones performances?
I would. He is good as Bernie but weaker with the other characters. His little girl voice was awful.
Do you think The Burglar in the Library needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I will read any book about Bernie Rhodenbarr. I wish there were more.
    Any additional comments?
Clever idea but just didn't hold my attention.

Meanwhile, the brass have partnered him with Lisa Delorme, newly shifted to homicide from the Office of Special Investigations, and Cardinal can't help but wonder if she's been sent to keep tabs on him. A guilty conscience makes him think so.
Superbly paced, with fully-fleshed characters and utterly convincing police detail, Forty Words for Sorrow is also a novel of place that transcends the genre. Blunt puts us in a small Canadian town in the dead of winter and makes us feel the cold, then turns the cold into a metaphor for the destruction of young lives.
    Critic Reviews:
"Blunt has done for Canada's north what James Lee Burke did for Cajun Louisiana." (Margaret Cannon, Toronto Globe and Mail)
    Members Reviews:
    Bad narration
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator drove me crazy with his weird British/Scottish/Irish-like accents for Canadians. I have NEVER heard any Canadians speak with this kind of hybrid accent, and certainly not French Canadians. He would have done better keeping to one voice.
    Material outweighs average narration
The accents used were atrocious and not even close to the average speaking voice in the real North Bay.
    Canadian Cop a Winner
This was my first experience with this author and the novel is toward the end of the series. However, this didn't diminish my overall enjoyment of the plot, the characters and the pictures the author paints of a demented pair of killers in a cold and desolate landscape. A child is found buried in a slab of ice and from there, a grisly tale of madness and obsession unfolds. I'd be happy if Audible carried more of this series.

  • Murder in Foggy Bottom Audiobook by Margaret Truman

    Title: Murder in Foggy Bottom
    Author: Margaret Truman
    Narrator: Alan Sklar

Length: 9 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-20-08
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 34 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Firmly ruling out coincidence, investigators seek means and motive. The means are soon apparent: small-scale weaponry with large-scale impact. Their country of origin? A place where nearly everything - hardware, information, love - can be found for a price. Max Pauling, a State Department investigator, seasoned, good-looking, and hard to fool, quickly takes off on a trail still as warm as the smoking wreckage.
A host of vivid characters people the narrative, including a lovely State Department analyst who finds herself attracted to undercover types; a militia leader in Idaho who leads his people into gunfire; a reporter at odds with his boss but not with a good story; and a secretary of state who loves baseball slightly more than her job.
Fast-paced and informative about flying, food, statecraft, and the violent "wetwork" under the dryly elegant exterior of diplomacy, Margaret Truman's Murder in Foggy Bottom is another winner in the Capital Crimes series.
    Critic Reviews:
"A first-rate mystery writer drawing on an I-was-there expertise that makes the Washington scene clang with credibility." (Los Angeles Times Book Review)
"She can write suspense with the best of them" (Larry King)
    Members Reviews:
    Great book, okay narration
I've read most of Margaret Truman's books and this one is just a good as the others. It could be happening in real life today and her insight of the inner workings of the government make it even more interesting.
This is my first time listening to one of her books. Alan Sklar's voice just didn't have enough range for me. Many of the characters sounded similar. I noticed my attention wandering and I would even lose track of who was speaking.
I will continue to read Margaret Truman but I'll stick to reading them to myself.
    Captivating
If you could sum up Murder in Foggy Bottom in three words, what would they be?
    Missiles, Russians, FBI
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes, the comparison between the two sources of information about the missiles had me going for a while. Good plot and sub-plots.
Have you listened to any of Alan Sklars other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, never. Not a bad job.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No extreme reaction just liked the book. Great detail makes you be part of what's going on.
    POLITICAL INTRIGUE
Margaret Truman was the daughter of Harry Truman. Harry Truman was the 34th president of the United States, in office from 1945 to 1953. Her mysteries take place in Washington, D.C.
This book centers on a terrorist attack, and the mysteries surrounding what group was responsible. I found it interesting, and rather surprising, that the book was copyrighted in 2000, the year before the attacks on the World Trade Center towers in New York City. To avoid "spoilers" I won't make any additional comment about that.
There is a fairly large cast of characters, since several government agencies are involved in finding the perpetrators of the attack. I had no trouble keeping track of the characters.
If you have read and enjoyed other Margaret Truman mysteries, I believe you will enjoy this one.

    Title: Blacklist
    Subtitle: V. I. Warshawski, Book 11
    Author: Sara Paretsky
    Narrator: Sandra Burr
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 42 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-17-08
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 115 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
This is a story of secrets and betrayals that stretch across four generations - secrets political, social, sexual, financial: all of them with the power to kill. Eager for something physical to do in the spirit-exhausting wake of 9/11, V.I. accepts a request from an old client to check up on an empty family mansion; subsequently surprises an intruder in the dark; and, giving chase, topples into a pond. Grasping for something to hold on to, her fingers close around a lifeless human hand.
It is the body of a reporter who had been investigating events of 45 years earlier, during the McCarthy era, and V. I.'s discovery quickly sucks her into the history of two great Chicago families - their fortunes intertwined by blood, sex, money, and the scandals that may or may not have resulted in murder all these years later. At the same time, she inadvertently becomes involved in the story of a missing Egyptian boy whose possible terrorist connections make him very much sought after by the government. As the two cases drive her forward - and then shockingly tumble together, pushing her into situations more perilous than she could have imagined - she finds that wealth and privilege, too, bear a terrible price; and the past has no monopoly on patriotic scoundrels. Before everything is over, at least two more people will lie dead...and V.I. might even be one of them.

    A Great Story Teller
I had read this when first released, but with Audible, I was listening anew. Loved the story and as always, a great cast of characters.
    Overwrought and Underwhelming: Too Bad
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Economize the story. Felt like ten pounds of potatoes in a five-pound bag.
What was most disappointing about Sara Paretskys story?
No wonder was V.I. so exhausted and exhausting in chronicling the roman a clef historical overlay with this narrative of class struggles, confused family org charts and dubious foul deeds. The material from which it was drawn held some interest, but the shuffling of characters resembled more of a game of three-card-monte than a well plotted journey. While I understand the device of the teen Egyptian refugee's dilemma, I wanted to slap Benjy's characterization bow-legged. What an annoying little twerp.
What does Sandra Burr bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Hers was a Herculean task to help match the characters voice and personality and emotions with the need to shepherd the reader through the dramatis personae. I think she was able to the task as challenging as it was.
Did Blacklist inspire you to do anything?
I stuck with it as I've read a good many of Paretsky's works (including listening to other audiobooks) and while there were many points I say "this is a hot mess". I was looking for redemption by the book's end. Not terribly satisfying, but did appreciate Sara's earnest effort and cloaked "then and now" comparisons with the HUAC cum Patriot Act's darker underpinnings. She made her points.
    Any additional comments?
I hope V.I. was to sleep this one off as it was a dozer for the listener/reader.
    Hated it.
Couldn't even finish it. Unresearched. Boring. Repetitive. Don't waste your money.

    One of the Best
This work focuses more on McCone's assistant Rae Kelleher and her soon to be ex-brother-in-law country music star Ricky Savage. For the first time Ricky and her sister Charlene's children other than Mick are detailed. The war zone atmosphere in the Savage household including Charlene's boyfriend and Ricky's numerous past infidelities are exposed. One of those past infidelities leads to a series of threatening notes and suspicious incidents and accidents. Included in those are a bullet through the window of the Savage house coming quite close to the music star. The tension builds; as does the close relationship between Ricky and Rae. the climatic scene comes as surprising both as to the perpetrator and his actions.
    Couldn't finish this soap opera!
After nearly 5 hours of listening, I quit. Seldom do I not finish a book but I just lost patience. The writing is best when it is descriptive, but the dialog is often trite and clichéd. I could almost predict the next phrase. I really did not sympathize with the characters--a popular country singer on the verge of a divorce by his mercurial wife. How original! The mystery takes a back seat to relationships among immature adults, at least up to this point. It reminds me of a soap opera like "As the World Turns" or "Days of our Lives." Sharon McCone does not compare favorably with Kate Wilhelm's Barbara Holloway or Laura Lippman's Tess Monaghan, for example. I see that there are 30 books in the McCone series, and this is #17, and apparently one of the most highly rated. So the author clearly has a following, as do the aforementioned soaps. Just not for me, I guess. I have no complaints about the narrator. She did as well as can be expected, even did a good job with male voices.
    Not very good
This was like listening to an episode of "Murder She Wrote". The reader even sounded like Angela Landsbury. There were about 200 characters and none of them were very memorable. And I need to check the publication date because the characters were talking about getting a car phone in addition to their "Cellular Phone". Just and out of date and out of touch snooze fest.

    A story with beautiful history
Vicky and Father John investigate the murder of a student that finds something that he knows validates his research. Many people are not happy with what it proves and are willing to do anything to stop it. One of the more difficult Margaret Coel stories of the Arapaho Nation to stop reading once you start.
    Margaret Coel
I have really enjoyed the books by Margaret Coel. The stories she tells about Indian life in the present day is most informative and keeps my attention. She tells a great story and always has some surprises in her stories. That's a part that I really do enjoy. Her characters are realistic and most believable. If you like books about Indian life on a reservation, you would most likely enjoy Margaret Coel's books.
    Always a good read
Again, historically interesting -- and accurate. Coel is a fine writer and more than competent researcher. Her readers can learn a great deal
about the Arapaho as they enjoy the plot unfolding.
You may like these Indian Reservation / Catholic Mission novels
Have liked all of her stories about the Wind River Reservation near Lander, Wy. Very easy and predictable read. However I must admit that I try any novel that is about American Indians. Loved Tony Hillerman's older books.
    Fabulous
I've been reading the entire wind river reservation series and this one is by far the best and there are many more to read. I recommend the entire series

Taut, Complex in Every Way Fantastic Listen
Peter Temple knows how to write characters, deep, with history yet brevity of prose, the plot is multi-layer, reminding me of "The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo". I loved the narrator, taking a bit of time to get used to the Aussie accent and colloquialisms. Short sentences, searing scenes, this book was gripping until the last sentence. Highly recommend.
    Dripping With Local Color
Superb. Beautifully written noir detective yarn set in Australia that is wonderfully read. Hearing it in the colorful accent of an Australian enhances the book and adds to the local feeling. The writing is wonderful, with a lot of snide, dark humor. I've gone on to read two other books of Temple's and enjoyed them both.
Great Narrator Enhances a Terrific Story
Would you consider the audio edition of The Broken Shore to be better than the print version?
Yes. The narrator brought so much to the table. I really loved his work. That said, Peter Temple is a true prose master and anything he writes is a pleasure to read. But Mr Hosking really brought it to life. I will be on the lookout for more audiobooks read by him.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes! And I rewound many times to savor Hosking's reading or Temple's lovely prose.
    Any additional comments?
Really confused as to why some other reviewers claimed the Australian accent was hard to understand. I am American and I completely disagree. There was some Aussie slang I didn't know and had to look up, but it had nothing to do with Mr. Hosking's reading. He was a joy to listen to.
    authentically Australian
What did you love best about The Broken Shore?
An excellent story, a sympathetic and intriguing main character, and authentic Australian atmosphere - well written and well read.
    Great characters
This is a good book. Warning the mystery centers around sexual abuse of children. The abuse happens in the past and is not graphically talked about. The narrator is great. It is an interesting police procedural

    Enjoyable English Romp
I enjoyed this murder mystery although at times it was annoyingly read (a mentally ill woman in the book is portrayed in whiny girl tones throughout) A good mystery and I am looking forward to listening to more from Ann Granger.
Not the best of Ann Granger
I love Ann Granger and I have listened to as many of her books on audio as I could find. However, I found this book a genuine disappointment. It felt very disconnected and choppy. Also, the ending was, IMO, very far fetched. Granger has written many, many other books that were far better than this one.
Another good story from Anne Granger
Anne Granger's stories are not grittily realistic, like Ian Rankin's or Peter Robinson's, and are more like a modern-day Agatha Christie in that multiple murders are committed in English villages and amateur sleuthing contributes to the final resolution. If you like that genre you'll enjoy this book (and her others) as she produces well-crafted stories and creates characters you can see in your imagination. The writer is well-served by the excellent reading by Judith Boyd.

Treat yourself to a wonderful read.
Lew Archer, our hero, is the tough PI with a soft spot for the underdog and an eye for the ladies. This character is now well-develop and, multi-dimensional as are the other players introduced in this tale. Ross Macdonald is a wonderful writer who provides entertainment and describes the people and places of Southern California in the early 1950's. Treat yourself to the entire Lew Archer series.
    Five Stars

    Good Story, Good Pace
This a good read. One of Macdonald's best in my opinion.
    Early Lew Archer, foreshadows Bosch.
Still a great writer after 60 years.
