Another remarkable visit with Andy Dalziel

Hill is simply amazing. Each novel in this series is an adventure in shifting perspective and innovative technique yet the characters remain as comfortable as a well-loved pair of Nike trainers. I hope Mr. Hill lives - and writes - forever!

Meh......rather cliched

This is my first Dalziel and Pascoe story, and I think it stands on its own and I didn't feel I needed to have read the others beforehand. And I'm glad I didn't, I guess, because they seem rather cliched. The characters and the story aren't bad, but not terribly novel or interesting either......the best thing about the book was the creation of the overlapping time frames to illustrate how everything happened in a single day.

Probably good for fans of these characters, but I thought it was just OK......I certainly didn't like it as much as I enjoyed The Woodcutter.

Too urban

I do not like gangster mysteries. I guess I like my mysteries driven by other things besides urban gangsters, because, like the stupid vampire mysteries , it is too easy to throw in any resolution to problem and not develop characters.

I do not like any of the characters in this book.

Excellent

I never fancied the television series and so I would probably never had read this had I not read The Woodcutter by the same author . Now I'm hooked. I found it difficult to stop listening to, loved the characters and the storyline and thought it had a very satisfactory ending. Perfect in fact from start to finish.

If you liked The Woodcutter, you'll love this

An excellent book with the same narrator as The Woodcutter. Fast paced and well written. You do not have to have any prior knowledge of Dalziel to enjoy it. I would definitely recommend it.

A Fun Read

Susan Kandel brings the Nancy Drew collecting world to life in a funny and engrossing mystery set in Southern California. Cece Caruso writes about dead authors and when she's invited to be the keynote speaker at the annual Nancy Drew fan convention in Palm Springs, Cece jumps at the chance. Cece is writing about the corporate authors of the Nancy Drew series, but her real fascination for the biography of Nancy Drew, is with Grace Horton, the young woman who was the model for Nancy Drew in the original book covers. Edgar Edward, world famous Nancy Drew collector, invites Cece to stay in his house for the weekend. Unfortunately, when Cece and her friends Lael and Bridget arrive at the house, they find Edwards behind his Palm Springs house with a bullet in his forehead and his current live-in boyfriend has disappeared. The Palm Springs police are eyeing Cece with suspicion, so Cece feels obligated to find the killer before she becomes the next victim. She has her own ideas about who could have murdered Edgar and why, and she's determined to make her case and get her murderer, just like Nancy Drew did. Man crazy, Lael and Bridget, her two friends, lend support to Cece's investigation along with Cece's boyfriend, detective Peter Gambino. It's evident that Kandal did plenty of research for all the Nancy Drew information in this book, but it doesn't intrude into the crisp narration. The mystery was not easy to figure out, and it galloped along to a satisfying conclusion. I didn't figure it out until the end.

Kendal has a good series going here and I really look forward to reading about the next mystery author that Cece decides to write about.

Awesome Book

This book is so good, I bought all the rest in the series. The story is a mystery but also is chock full of information about Nancy Drew era of writing. If you grew up reading Nancy Drew then this is a must read. You won't be able to put the book down plus will enjoy the trip down memory lane as you solve the mystery.

Favorite detective stories. Detective/Investigator Timothy Coyne is one of my favorite characters.

I wish that this series had been continued. However I am happy that two books were written.

I'm a huge fan of all of Lawrence Sanders' books --the Deadly Sins, the Commandments, and the Timothy Files series -- and finally purchased them all for the Kindle, and am re-reading them all again.

Enjoyable Story

I enjoyed the Timothy Cone series. He and his companion are likable flawed characters and I enjoy the story line. Fast paced and interesting.

What did you like best about Vanishing Act? What did you like least?

I have enjoyed the Sisterhood stories until this one! I felt the author was in a rush to finish the book. No follow through with some of the story lines. I was very disappointed!

Always good for a laugh

I just can not get enough of these books. I always laugh out loud at some point when I am reading them. They become somewhat easy to figure out after reading a few but it never disappoints in the funny department.

Best Series

Love Stephanie Plumb. These books are filled with a lot of action, plenty of humor and total mystery as to rather Stephanie will pick Joe or Ranger.

Excellent Thriller/Mystery, Flawless Narration

Ordinarily, I am leery of historical settings but this novel was an absolute joy. The story moves fast, is filled with interesting and believable characters, and thrilling action. Our hero's playwright brother is mostly refreshingly absent and the Elizabethan setting serves as the perfect backdrop for this gritty spy novel.

Great Entertainment

This ripping yarn is a first-rate historical novel and a gripping mystery, read by the excellent Simon Vance. Usually, I don't care for blending fact and fiction, but this one pulled it off through a complex, tangled plot and expert storytelling. I couldn't recommend it more highly!

Great entertainment!

My favourite reader on Audible, and he delivers a great story - a thriller set in Elizabethan England. The hero is the older brother of William Shakespeare (who makes a cameo appearance in the story). John Shakespeare is a spy for Secretary Walsingham, attempting to foil a plot to assassinate Sir Francis Drake on the eve of the Spanish Armada. Some wonderfully evil villains, a beautiful heroine, lots of action and intrigue and a touch of romance. I enjoyed every minute of this novel.

Blood and religion

It sometimes seems as if all the authors responsible for the recent plethora of novels set in Tudor England feel obligated to include a scene involving drawing and quartering (the gruesome fate of non-noble traitors). When "Martyr" started out with a totally gratuitous detailed description of this horrific form of execution, I almost didn't continue, thinking the book was just going to be a clich??d catalog of titillating tortures.

There is plenty of torturing and plenty of bloodletting and plenty of suffering as the book goes along, but the story picks up pace and gets more interesting (if only barely plausible). I always enjoy Simon Vance???s narrations, and have listened to so many of them that his voice makes me feel right at home. If you like Vance's voice and you???re not yet tired of the Tudors, you???ll probably enjoy this one.

Another choice, if Audible ever gets a chance to offer them, would be Edward Marston's Nicholas Bracewell novels, especially the first one ("The Queen's Head"), which covers similar territory to "Martyr." Like "Martyr," the Bracewell novels have a Shakespearean theater connection, but they are more original (or maybe just seemed that way when I read them back in the 20th century) and less sensationalistic.

Love this series!

The Irene books are a light, easy read that can at times be predictable, but are always enjoyable. I picked up one of the series by accident and have been hooked ever since. I love to read them in print and listen to the audio version as well. In my opinion the narrator is the perfect voice for Irene and reminds me of a smoother version of CJ Critt's narrations. The relationship between Irene and her husband, Frank, is a great addition to the series. I love that he is from Bakersfield (my hometown) and it was really fun to hear some of their back story in this one. I can't wait to start the next one in this series. Definitely would recommend this book, and the series to anyone who likes mysteries.

Loved all the new and further developed characters

I love characters and evolution of characters. Burke succeeds at that, and with each book, her story telling improves. I can see huge strides in Hocus. In her next book, she's over the top with her story telling. If you want to know people that her star Irene Kelly knows, this is for you.

Another good one ... but ....

Still enjoying this good series. Love the characters and all the storylines surrounding the large Knott family. Excellent mystery in this story. My only criticism comes regarding the snide political remarks starting to creep in. I appreciate that the author has her views regarding past and present politicians, as we all do. But, if I wanted real life politics thrown in and her views, I'd read a book on politics instead of a mystery fiction book.

A wholesome mystery

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It is a great breakout story from the usual inspector Pitt series. The despicable grandmother has a chance to become known to the reader. She has a chance to show her metal as an investigator and maybe Charlotte isn't the only one in the family with a brain. It is a great listen especially if you know Pitt but stands quite on its own, too.

I liked it because it gave me a chance to know another member of the "Pitt" family.

Transformational Learning

The most fascinating aspect of this book was the inspiring transformation of the heretofore least sympathetic character among the Pitt family relatives, Mariah Ellison, into someone with courage, curiosity, and compassion for herself as well as others.

Great series book. Terrence Harriman is an excellent narrator who gives each character a personality that is quite easy to imagine.

The horror! The horror! (The narration, that is)

My God, what an awful, awful listening experience. My ears are burning. Please, never, never let Dick Hill narrate ANYTHING again. He is beyond awful. He slurs, mumbles, drags through his words and sounds positively geriatric. Absolutely dreadful.

It was only my sheer commitment to the story and wanting to know what happened that kept me going through these last two books. I can only assume there must have been a very good reason to switch narrators this late in a series, but please NEVER do this again!

Anyway, back to Christopher Price now so I can enjoy the conclusion of the series. But I needed an ear enema and a good lie-down after listening to the last two.

Horrible narration

While I love this series i couldn't stomach this one. This Dick Hill fellow in my opinion is horrible. I barely made it through the previous book he narrated, but I cant finish this one. Total letdown.

I would definitely try another book from Wilson, he is a master story writer however Dick Hill is not my favorite narrator.

Since I am listening to the series in order I will be starting Ground Zero this afternoon.

If given a choice, I would prefer not to. I did not much understand a lot of what he said...I understand there was an Asian motif bit I kept nodding off and I don't usually do that with Wilson's books.

Of course it had redeeming qualities, the master wrote and I listened, regardless of how disappointed I was in this book I will continue to listen to his stories, they are fascinating.

I Love this series, BUT, and that is a huge BUT, never think you can bring on a new narrator in a series. Rick Hill is good in his style, BUT he IS NOT, even e n close to making me want to listen. I feel cheated now. I bought 2 books. #11 and 12 thinking it would not be so bad. O M G, I was so wrong. Rick Hill tried, he really did but after reading 10 books or listening to them, I was totally thrown off. His voice for His was nowhere near Prices narration. It was broken, and just not right. I figured after that maybe the next book would be better as it also was narrated by Mr. Hill, but I swear it said Chris Price. Abe w a s not even r e recognizable. I returned both as I could not get through them with this narration as Jack and family. If you know Jack, ( no pun intended) either 're a d the actual story or skip them.
