Easy read

Not the greatest book I have listened to, but enjoyed the course of it, on the road it kept me interested as it was easy to listen to. A little like a lifetime movie.

Good sleuthing

The whole murder/suspense thing was pretty well done and with lots of plot twists. The art world background was pretty interesting. The "hop into bed as quickly as possible" felt awfully contrived this time. Not a bad tale, and does hold interest through most of the book. See publisher's blurb for more clues.

The narrator did good character differentiation, but the intonation of the MC sounded more like an irritating early teen.

Great story!

This is one of my favorite JAK books. I like everything about it. On the Audible version, the narrator was a little distracting. She made Alexa so shrill sometimes it made her annoying. She could have expressed her indignation in a lower tone of voice. Trask was done very well. But the other men all sounded like they had a sore throat, or were 90 years old. Other female narrators do the same thing. I wonder why they bother to try. Male narrators that Ive heard make little differentiation in their voices for female or male characters and its not a distraction at all. Because I like the story so much I will probably listen again despite the narration issues.

A delightful narrator and a good story

Would you listen to Cat Telling Tales again? Why?

I have already listened to this audio book twice! Why? It is a fun read and a delight for any Joe Grey fan. I am baffled why there are note more of this popular series on audiobook they would be my go to choice for a light, cat loving read.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The listener becomes absorbed in the lives and events of the cat characters who are all portrayed with affection and wit. The sub-story about Pan and Misto will move any cat lover and have them cheering at the end. A favourite? It would be mean to pick one out - the humans and Molena Point are a delight and the cats make me laugh and sometimes hold my breath!

What does Susan Boyce bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

It is, sometimes, simply nice to be read to, and by a voice of Susan Boyce's quality with its gentle characterisation and relaxed manner.

Any additional comments?

PLEASE commission Susan Boyce to read the whole series - there is a huge gap in the Joe Grey lover's library that Auduble needs to fill!

Narrator, not so good

The narration is choppy making a difficult listen. However the story is quirky and fun and would have been rated much higher with a better narrator. It's good to see that future books have another narrator. Thanks

One of the best Cat Mysteries Ever

Would you listen to Cat Telling Tales again? Why?

I will listen to this again for sure. I love the series and Susan Boyce did a fantastic job bringing the characters to life.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I especially like Kit as she has a special wonder about the world around her. All the cats are wonderful characters with individual personalities.

What about Susan Boyce???s performance did you like?

She captures the personalities of the cats and the people so that it all becomes very believable. The focus is on the mystery, not on the fact that the cats are talking to each other and to their human friends.

I have read and love all the Shirley Rousseau Murphy Joe Grey books. I was disappointed with the narrator of the two previous audiobooks and only tried this one because the sample sounded so much better. (The other narrator was just not right for these books, in my opinion). I hope that they continue making these audio versions and that Ms.

Still waiting for a laugh

Would you try another book from Laurence Shames and/or Richard Ferrone?

No, don't think so. This was just not what I was led to believe it would be.

What was most disappointing about Laurence Shamess story?

It is no where close to Hiassen or Dorsey's humor, or characters. The story just rambled, hard to tell who was who. Best part of whole book was when the dog pooped.

Would you be willing to try another one of Richard Ferrones performances?

Hard to say, for free, maybe.....he just did not give the characters real voices.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Sunburn?

The whole book? While the storyline is a good one, the writing just did not follow through.

I have very rarely given a truly bad review. So I hate to write this one. However, I must say this book was nothing close to a Hiaasen or even Dorsey. I found literally nothing humorous in the book at all. The characters all ran together, nothing stood out at all. The narrator either couldn't or choose not to use different voices for each one, so you could not tell who was who.

Do I think I would listen to another Shame's book? I really don't know. This storyline could have, should have been funny. Really. But after this listen, I think I will shy away from another one by this author.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Delightful characters that make me think of Elmore Leonard, Tim Dorsey and Carl Hiaasen. Warm and witty definitely describe the tone of Shames writing.

Laurence Shames and Richard Ferrone are once again a wonderful team. Key West is again the setting. The story centers on Vincente Delgado, the aging capo di tutti capi, and his family. His bastard son Joey Goldman, his full-blood son Gino Delgado, his retired consigliere Bert the Shirt, and more: This world is created and sustained throughout a sustained comic but serious tale of aging, family ties, romance, danger and surprise. Shames is one of the funniest authors in my experience, and one of the few who can create a full-length novel which is a perfect mix of suspense, humor, love for his characters and with no phony deus ex machina artifices. The FBI is involved, but only in a peripheral way. The godfather decides to write a book in his waning years, and he recruits a Key West newspaperman, Artie Magnus, to ghost-write. Gino brings a bimbo, Debbie, down to the keys with him, and everything Gino touches turns to dreck. Everyone gets involved in the dangerous cleanup. The wisdom of the Godfather and of Bert the Shirt are touching and painful: two Sicilian guys who had no real choice but to follow in the path of their fathers and grandfathers. Richard Ferrone once again is spectacular. All of his voicings are consistent with who we think these people might be.

Unusual for Shames: kinda boring.

This is Shames's last book in the Key West series, and he shoulda quit while he was ahead. The protagonist, Pete Amsterdam, is a reluctant detective, a reluctant lover, and generally a reluctant human being. He plays tennis with the most obnoxious character Shames has ever created. There are a couple of deaths, of course, but the solving of these crimes is slow and lugubrious. Shames just seems to have run out of steam. There is absolutely no humor or wit in the entire book. Shames's fans will be sorely disappointed, as his prior ability to create truly funny people and amusing situations has vanished. In its place is a vacuum, not to be too harsh about it. Certainly there is some good writing. The love affair between Pete and Maggie is tender and halting. Way too halting. There is a truly unbelievable so-called nymphomaniac. There is highly improbable digging in the ground, which Shames has described many times as hard coral, which fills up with liquid whenever you dig in it. There is a nifty funeral in which the dead man is hauled up about five stories into a family crypt, because you really can't bury a dead body in solid coral. Still, we are used to so much more from this writer. Don't go for it.

I thought it might be funny the way it started out but it turned out to be tedious and predictable.

What could Laurence Shames have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Wouldn't dream of telling a successful author what I think, He doesn't need me and doesn't care.

The narrating could be better

The narrator makes the love scenes seem comical. I read the first part of the book and it did not seem ridiculous yet when Justine Eyre reads it, I laughed. I like her reading the rest of the book but the love scenesnot so much.

Terrible Narrator

I am abandoning this half way through - I just can't get past the narrator. She sounds like an elderly lady and this book calls for a younger sounding voice. The story sounds like it could be good but I can't concentrate on it because of the narration.

Pretty Good Book

This was an interesting book. I loved the action and the plot. The mystery was in depth and full of twists and turns. I didnt see the end coming, and I was a little surprised by who the killer was. I had my eye on two different people for the fear induced murders, but I was wrong. I was intrigued and full of anxiety for the people involved. I kept thinking, no, not this person, or the person, and was really glad to have a good ending even though some of it was a little messed up at the end. I was like really, this happened, and then I was relieved when it all turned out well.

The only complaint I truly have about this book is all the sexual action. I dont usually have trouble with sensuality and sex in novels, but it seemed like this book and the others after it was full of sex. Its kind of hard to accept a sexual relationship between people who dont really know each other. I think the problem was the fact that there was no build up, no real tension, no relationship building until after the characters had engaged in the act. Not to mention, I like to get to know characters well before all the intimacy starts. It makes me understand the interplay and the interest that is there. It also makes me understand why a couple begin to care for each other and share an act that I often associate with caring if not love. Maybe Im a little naïve and old fashion, but I think thats the way it should be even in books :).

Not the Riordan I love

I am an adult, but I love Riordan's youth novels. This is too heavy, but I would not slam it except for the language. I get very tired of hearing the same word over and over.and over.

THE BOOK WENT ON AND ON AND NOTHING WAS HAPPENING. THINGS WERE NOT EXPLAINED PROPERLY. EX: A PHONE CALL THAT CAME IN IN THE BEGINNING OF THE BOOK AND THEY ANSWERED IT LIKE THEY WERE A LOOKING FOR CREDIT INFORMATION. THEY WERE INVESTIGATING A CRIME.

THE FACE OF FEAR BY DEAN KOONTZ. READ IT YEARS AGO WHEN I WAS ABLE TO READ BOOKS. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE AUDIO VERSION. I WILL LOVE IT I AM SURE.

Laugh Out Loud Funny

I must repectfully disagree with the other reviewers. I found the concept and story outstanding! The back and forth between the two authors was fresh and funny. Their reactions to each others chapters were some of the funniest things in the book. The concept of two authors taking turns writing chapters is awesome. I love the way the story changes depending on which one wrote the chapter. I looked like an idiot while grocery shopping because I was laughing so hard! The narration was perfect. If you only like traditional mysteries then skip this, If you want something new new and different try it. I hope this is only the beginning!!

The Bickersons write a murder mystery

Leaving in the unvarnished authors' notes to each other is certainly original, but I'm not sure that in the end it was such a good idea. It doesn't show either one in the best light, and perhaps is proof that reconnecting with exes is a bad idea. The story itself ended up being passable, despite the fact that you get to see Lutz and Hayward wrestling over everything throughout. But the Spellmans series is better.

The inflections used make it obvious that the bickering back and forth is good natured

The story itself isn't anything spectacular but the comments and reactions that the authors have to what the other one is doing are priceless. Lisa is especially brutal. :)

Too much sniping

The "mystery" part of this book ranges from the absurd to the merely predictable, but what's truly annoying is the sarcastic and mean-spirited tussling between the two authors. I'm not sure why this book saw the light of day, and I trust Lisa and Dave are now done with each other. I know I'm glad to be done with them.
