Adolescent and poorly written

I can't believe this book got so many good reviews. It is awful and, I, who almost always finishes books! stopped reading. The writing is on a junior high level with little sentence variety. The dialogue between characters is unrealistic. The characters have little depth or sometimes depth beyond what is reasonable to expect. Occasionally an SAT word is thrown in to convince the reader the author and/or characters have some intellect but mostly these words just call attention to the rest of the childish writing. I downloaded this and 3 other Eve Duncan books during a sale because there so many good reviews. What a mistake .. I won't even start the others.

Sleep No More (Eve Duncan)

This was another good novel by Iris Johansen.

But far from some of her better story telling.

The character Beth was a bit over the proverbial cliff.

I did like that nasty old grandmother, now that was some character, lol.

I am looking forward to seeing her in further Eve Duncan and Eve's sister novels.

Strong doesn't have to mean RUDE!

I have always liked Iris Johansen's books especially the ones featuring Eve Duncan. This one was a quick read, and overall, I enjoyed it. My one complaint with Ms. Johansen's books is that she seems think the only way a woman can come across as strong is to make her be rude. Eve is frequently rude to new people she meets and her long-time love, Joe. The new women characters in this book, Beth and Kendra, are also rude especially when they first meet Eve. I get that maybe you are supposed to see them as hard and defensive on the outside due to the tough times they've gone through, but once you get to know them, they are loyal and caring. My issue is that I don't think anyone would take the time and trouble to get to know these women after their initial impression of them. I just wish Johansen could write strong female characters without them all being so rude to everyone.

I realize that for some readers the brutality towards and abuse of children may be just too much but the problem unfortunately exists and I believe that Ms. Neuhaus is right that it must be brought to the public in order to be prevented (or at least efforts to be made to minimize it...).

The book was very suspenseful but not as convincing as her other books.

I am a big fan of this talented author but this book was a bit disappointing. I think she tried to pack in so many things that it did not flow well. There were so many characters and I prefer experiencing fewer characters in more depth. And the portrayal of abuse was just too brutal. Very different from her other books, which I thought were excellent.

Difficult subject - great suspenseful thriller

In her latest novel "Böser Wolf", Nele Neuhaus goes one step further than in her five previous novels and lets her main characters investigate a crime which transcends local boundaries and uncovers a large conspiracy so evil that it will sicken and disturb most readers when thinking about these crimes happening to real people, in real life.

Several threads start in the first part of the book:

Pia Kirchhoff has settled into a comfortable life with her new partner Christoph, trying to get used to looking after a small child when his granddaughter Lilly comes for an extended visit from Australia. With Oliver von Bodenstein away on a trip, she is the first person on call when the mutilated body of a teenage girl is found floating in the Main. Despite extensive investigations into the identity of the girl, the team are unable to make real progress in the case, as nobody even seems to be missing the teenager.

cute Canadian cozy

* very cozy formula: village murder with RCMP inspector teamed with local amateur sleuth on both an investigation and blossoming romance. You can guess easily who the killer is, but that's not the point of the listen! --more of a traditional village cozy than whodunit

* captures the rural anglophone New Brunswick setting well -- although an outsider, I lived there around that period (1980s) and I "recognized' the characters and voice

*good, gentle humour; decent writing, especially the dialogue

* Dufris hits the right notes with all the characters - no over-the-top Canucks, but there is some regional inflection respectfully attempted

*another gift from the publishing world of e- and audiobooks - I hadn't come across MacLeod/Craig before. I look forward to more of her audiobooks. This first of a series has me hooked.

At Last!!! A Charlotte MacLeod mystery novel!!!

This is a great cozy mystery written in Charlotte MacLeod's gently humerous way. She wrote around three dozen intelligent, funny, carefully crafted mystery novels in her lifetime, in more than one series, and some stand-alones. I have been hoping for years that Audible would get some of them, and they finally have one. I enjoyed it immensely, and I really hope that the rest of this series (Madoc & Janet Rhys series) will be recorded & be made available on Audible, too. William Dufris did a great job as reader!

And please, Audible, try to acquire Charlotte MacLeod's "Sarah Kelling & Max Bittersohn" series. It was recorded by Books On Tape, and read by Mary Peiffer. (I requested them a few years ago, but no luck so far.)

Performance destroys an already weak book

What would have made A Pint of Murder better?

If a book is to be performed rather than read, it's essential to choose a narrator whose voice sounds something like that of the main character. In most cases, the narrator should be the same gender as the protagonist. Mr. Dufris is unable to make Janet sound anything like an sweet young woman. He does better with the male characters.

comfort food

I have read this book before, so I knew what to expect: a good story, a cozy atmosphere, reasonably gore-free murders, good characters. It's not remotely suspenseful, it's essentially good macaroni and cheese for those days when you yearn for just that. Charlotte MacLeod is always gently funny; this series is set in Canada, in a small community that seems real but not realistic. Other series are different.

Lots of thrills!

Would you consider the audio edition of Invisible Murder to be better than the print version?

Katy Kellgren's reading is AMAZING. She's dramatic without being OVERdramatic, and is easy to listen to.

What did you like best about this story?

I LOVED The Boy in the Suitcase, so was eagerly awaiting this new book. It's as good as everyone says - as good as the first, with more Nina Borg character development. Don't want to give away anything, but there are definite surprises along the way.

Katherine Kellgren's voice is easy to listen to and appropriate for this story, but where the heck was the editing and quality control??? There are many examples of a line being repeated, and at 11:50 of chapter 11 we are subjected to hearing the narrator stumble and exclaim with frustration. DISTRACTING!

Clever story, sloppy production, not a fave

Kaaberbol and Friis are very adept at weaving together the stories of multiple characters and points of view into a story with good forward momentum. I have to say, though, that I find the principal character in this book and the last, Nina Borg, to be fairly unappealing and not at all an individual I can identify with or root for.

The audiobook is sorely in need of editing. The narrator will re-read a section more than once, occasionally interjecting "Oh! He's supposed to be Hungarian!" or something like that. I'm also not fond of her transition from reading to overacting in tense plot moments.

All in all, although the plot is good, I would find it hard to recommend this overall.

Production Values Off Here

I purchased this because it part of the Soho Crime Press catalog and I usually enjoy international stories. The story was a bit confusing and was not helped by what were obvious production glitches. Once would have been ok but they kept happening, as if the editors forgot to delete mistakes of narrator.

So, I have to say up front that I really hate the way this woman performs a book. Her voice is grating and she will suddenly increase her volume the moment anything is meant to be getting dramatic.

Case Number 28 at the 87th Precinct

With many McBain 87th Precinct novels under my belt, I was expecting a little more from Number 28 in the series. With this long a series, I suspect I have taken to comparing each individual book with those that have gone before, so anyone reading my assessment should take that into account. This work opens with six naked bodies found in a ditch. The story line includes the usual McBain elements, namely dialogues that are sometimes humorous and sometimes irrelevant to the plot that make the reader part of the on-going action and Bert Kling in love again. There is a twist, however. There is an after-the-fact confession woven into the on-going story that adds interest.

But, as I said earlier, for me there was something missing in this story compared to those I have read up to now. I was able to put the book down a lot easier. Was it McBain or just me? You'll have to judge that for yourself. As for me, I won't hesitate to pick up the next book in the series when I come across it.

Another great 87th Novel

Going through the whole 87th series sequentially I have had the great luck in reading 3 fantastic entries back-to-back-to-back with this being the first of the 3. First off the cover is completely misleading the main baddy in this novel is a bigoted white guy so not sure why the guy on the cover is black but whatever.

The novel has a pretty gruesome crime at the start with 6 bodies found in a ditch. Essentially the story is about street gangs and is less of a who-done-it mystery and more of a "stay seated and enjoy the ride". The story goes back and forth in timelines with 1 timeline being shown as the crime is being investigated and the 2nd timeline being the final interrogation of the baddy. The buy guy in this is revealed right from the start and the guy is pretty reprehensible/racist/violent. The story is very well written and having part of the story shown from the bad guys POV which is pretty interesting because you see how he is justifying what he is doing.

Overall an awesome book and well worth the money!

The choice of the photo illustration on this particular edition is potentially misleading. The illustration shows an African-American man. In this 1973 novel, all the police officers, villains and victims with substantive speaking parts are white. The titular "chief," a gang leader, is a white racist idiot (and a stand-in for Richard Nixon). The story has many African-American and Hispanic "extras," but unfortunately no genuinely significant roles.

holds my interest

I enjoyed the story, it moves along without becoming boring, I enjoy sewing so the subject of the needle shop does interest me. I like how she puts the pieces together.

Its pretty easy to figure out the murderer early on, but she does move along Godwins story in this book and provides tons of information about needlecrafts. Im not a needlecrafts person, but the discussions of that craft in these books are fascinating even to me. The comic thing to me about these books is that each one starts by stating that Excelsior Minnesota is a quiet town where murder never happens, and in these books, murder happens every time, mostly in Excelsior. In fact, Excelsior is a quiet town along the shore of Lake Minnetonka.

Irish speaker adds authenticity

loved it. bittersweet story though. can almost feel myself experiencing his life. never sure how it's gong to end.

predictable ending

written in the first person, the main character tends to repeat himself and his feelings quite a lot. it is a bit rambling, and by the time it gets interesting, you`ve very likely managed to work out the guilty party for yourself. also, the story and the cast are not coherent or harmonious. I would not recommend buying it, although i liked tana french`s "in the woods" a lot.

Fabulous

I listen to a lot of crime/thriller books on here and I suppose I am always drawn to authors that are well reviewed and notable, therefore for me this was a risk...but I am so glad and so thrilled to find a book that was entertaining and with believable characters and brilliant dialog. It's a must and I will definitely seek out more by Tana French and anything read by Gerry O'Brien will get my vote...he is nothing short of excellent!! Thank you !

Pacey and Irish

Being from Dublin, I probably enjoyed this book more than someone who is not. But its such a buzz after years of listening to American murder mysteries to hear one in local accents based on totally believable, dysfunctional stereotypical characters. The book itself gets straight to the point and packs more than a few punches. Thoroughly enjoyable escapist stuff.

More than a crime novel

Having enjoyed the author's excellent crime novel, Broken Harbour, I hoped this would be as good: and it is. Although the narrative is carried along by the investigation of a crime perpetrated 20 years earlier, the book offers much more. It is highly evocative of Dublin life and its inhabitants of different generations. The listener is drawn into the lives of the characters such that I felt I was hearing about real people. A feeling reinforced by the immediacy of the dialogue given different voices by the excellent narrator.

A visit with Mrs Murphy

I have always enjoyed this series. I feel like I just stopped by and had a visit with old friends. Mrs Murphy and Pewter were at odds with each other in this book. This story was a bit different as it had more to do with cars and mechanics than other books. Even though the other books remarked that Harry and Boom Boom were "gear heads". I could just picture the scene where Tee Tucker was pulling Harry's hand and the two cats were standing on their hind legs pushing Harry's back legs trying to get her to go where Pewter had found a dead man. I enjoy the animal conversations but at times I feel as if Rita Mae Brown is preaching at me but I started to pay attention to see just how often people make comments about or against the government or some law. I found at least in my circle we do not make as many comment at they do in the book it was more frequent than I had thought, therefore I will give her more lee way in her story. I disagree with some of the other reviewer, I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to more. I one does not like animals this series is not for you.

Would you listen to The Big Cat Nap again? Why?

Yes I would I enjoy the animal chatter and Harry always confuses me with the way she thinks. But she does solve the case. I also enjoy the friendships between all the women in the book.

If youve listened to books by Rita Mae Brown before, how does this one compare?

Yes, I will listen to this again in the future sometime. I figure this one out way before Harry did and I usually don't.

What does Kate Forbes bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

She just has all the people down. You know as soon as she starts to talk who she is.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I think when all the animals were trying to get them to follow them to the body. We so often dismiss our animals, when they really have something to show or say.

Any additional comments?

I have love this series from the begining, also Sister Jane and her new series is good too. Rita Mae Brown I don't think she writes these as deep thinking (even though some have made me think hard) but for our entertainment. And I can truly say I have always been entertain.

Disappointing.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I LOVE the Mrs Murphy novels. This one, however fell way short of the rest. Much of the time it seemed that the characters lacked any emotional caring for each other. Even the cats and dog didn't really come across as liking each other. Many of the long standing characters are barely mentioned and it leaves you to wonder just what is going on. Found this book to lack the fullness and color that I have liked so much in Ms.

Really Good Book

This book was well written and the story line good. It held my attention from the first and I was sorry when it was over.

Terrible narrator

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator is awful. He sounds as if he is a bad actor reading a script out loud. He also does a horrible female voice and it's creepy when he talks from Karina's perspective.

I wish there were more books in this series. The relationships between the main characters and their internal struggles make this much more than a standard crime novel.
