Subtitle: An Inspector Banks Novel, Book 20
    Author: Peter Robinson
    Narrator: Simon Prebble
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 59 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-08-13
    Publisher: HarperAudio

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
A decorated detective inspector is murdered on the tranquil grounds of the St. Peters Police Treatment Centre, shot through the heart with a crossbow arrow, and compromising photographs are discovered in his room. Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks is well aware that he must handle the highly sensitive - and dangerously explosive - investigation with the utmost discretion.
Because the case may involve police corruption, an officer from Professional Standards, Inspector Joanna Passero, has arrived to work with Banks and his team. Though he tries to keep an open mind and offer his full cooperation, the dedicated Banks and his practical investigative style clash with Joannas cool demeanor and by-the-book professionalism. All too soon, the seasoned detective finds himself under uncomfortable scrutiny, his methods second-guessed.
As Banks digs deeper into the life and career of the victim, a decorated cop and recent widower named Bill Quinn, he comes to believe that Quinns murder may be linked to an unsolved missing persons case. Six years ago, a pretty 19-year-old English girl named Rachel Hewitt made national headlines when she disappeared without a trace in Tallinn, Estonia. Convinced that finding the truth about Rachel will lead to Quinns killer, Banks follows a twisting trail of clues that lead from England to the dark, cobbled alleys of Tallinns Old Town. But the closer he seems to solving the complicated cold case, the more it becomes clear that someone doesnt want the past stirred up.
While Banks prowls the streets of Tallinn, DI Annie Cabbot, recovered from her near fatal shooting and back at the station in Eastvale, is investigating a migrant labor scam involving corrupt bureaucrats and a loan shark who feeds on the poor. As evidence in each investigation mounts, Banks realizes the two are linked - and that solving them may put even more lives in jeopardy, including his own.

    Procedural With Depth
The mysteries I enjoy most are those with an intricate plot, an absence of graphic violence, and character development. This book has all these elements.
Simon Prebble is one of the best narrators I've heard. He adds much to the story without doing anything distracting.
I enjoy "police procedurals" and this author is one of the best at the genre.
Banks, Annie and Simon Prebble All In Top Form
Could not stop listening to this and almost stayed up all night. I've been a dedicated fan of Peter Robinson's Inspector Banks series from the beginning. About three books back, I sensed that perhaps Robinson (and Banks) were losing their way a bit. I am glad to see that in this book Robinson returns to tight plotting, great detective work and perserverence separately by Banks and Annie, interesting secondary characters, fascinating locations, contemporary and believable crimes, nasty as well as conflicted villains, and wonderful, chilling location vignettes. Add to this the always superb Simon Prebble as narrator and it's hard not to overdo the superlatives.
    Internationalional Special.
I found myself looking up a bit about Estonia. I was surprised to realize just how very far outdated at best and just plain ignorant. A lovely country most excellent economy and progressive government and social programs.

    A fun cozy series
I love cozy mysteries with a lot of humor, and this series has that in spades. Skye is funny, and compassionate, and I love that mix. I've downloaded several other books in the series and look forward to them.
There are a lot of mispronunciations, though, and they are jarring, because they make no sense in the flow of the story. Editors, you need to be catching these!
    Love this Series!
I'm so excited that Audible is going to put the first books in this series online. They are a fun light listen and I really like the characters. The narrator is great as well. They aren't deep and engrossing like some books but it's great to listen to something that can make you laugh and just enjoy the act of listening!
Glad to get the beginning of the story.
I had listened to several of the later books in the Scumble River series on audible and was very pleased to see the earlier ones start appearing. This series provides a lighter mystery that I enjoy.
Fun to learn how it all started, love this seriers
If you could sum up Murder of a Small-Town Honey in three words, what would they be?
    Mystery with a kick
What was one of the most memorable moments of Murder of a Small-Town Honey?
Skye and Simon's first encounter, too funny and all too real to many of us.
What does Khristine Hvam bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I love audio books so I can do something else while listening, consummate multi-tasker. Khristine is easy on the ears, especially when they are old ears. Easy to understand her and good tone and inflection while reading.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Can you believe this town is close to Chicago?
    Any additional comments?
Light and entertaining. Skye never thought she would have to eat those words so carelessly said at her graduation, lesson for all of us. Loved the interaction of all the characters and will be fun to see how they all develop. (I started listening towards the end of the series.)
Having a hard time making it through this
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This book is seriously dragging on. Its spending so much time on small town drama and background information that there is no Mystery to this mystery
What was most disappointing about Denise Swansons story?
    an actual mystery
How could the performance have been better?
i felt no connection to the chracters voices were drab
What character would you cut from Murder of a Small-Town Honey?
    skye

    Title: A Quiet Vendetta
    Author: R. J. Ellory
    Narrator: Donald Corren
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 20 hrs and 55 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-01-12
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 12 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Written by award-winning thriller heavyweight R. J. Ellory, this ambitious crime novel takes the authors skill for suspense to a spellbinding level.
When Catherine Ducane disappears in the heart of New Orleans, the cops react fast - after all, she is the governors daughter. But the case gets very strange, very quickly. Her bodyguard turns up horribly mutilated in the trunk of a beautiful vintage car, and when the kidnapper calls, he doesnt want money; he wants time alone with a certain government functionary.
Dragged down to the deep South from the New York district attorneys office, Ray Hartmann puzzles over why he has been summoned and why the mysterious kidnapper, an elderly Cuban named Ernesto Perez, wants to tell him his life story. But by the time the pieces fall into place, its already too late.
A Quiet Vendetta is both the epic story of one mans life in the Italian Mafia - a story ranging from Cuba to Chicago - and a thrilling tale of rage, love, and loss. With tension to match the best of Cussler, Patterson, and his own best-selling work, A Quiet Vendetta confirms R. J. Ellorys place at the forefront of the genre.
    R. J. Ellory, orphaned at the age of seven and sent to prison for poaching when he was seventeen, immersed himself in literature and set about learning the craft of writing fiction. He now divides his time between writing and volunteer programs in drug rehabilitation and youth literacy. He is married with one son.
    Critic Reviews:
An engrossing tale about organized crime from the perspective of a kidnapper whose agenda will keep you guessing until the end. (Entertainment Weekly, Must List)
As in the very best of thrillers, A Quiet Vendetta has the ring of truth and real research behind it all. With exquisite pace and perfect timing, R. J. Ellory has given us a piercing assessment of the nature of love, loyalty, and obsessive revenge, not to mention a deep understanding of la cosa nostra. (Guardian, London)
    R. J. Ellory proves himself a leader among the royalty of crime writers with this five-decade-long saga of Mafia history forming the framework for an exciting, well-constructed tale that ultimately becomes one of two men attempting to redeem themselves for their many individual sins against humanity. (New York Journal of Books)

or the life of a killer
Although one is fiction and the other is not, I found great similarities between ÂA Quiet Vendetta and ÂI heard you paint HousesÂ. The leading protagonists of both books, Ernesto Âthe Cuban Perez and Frank Âthe Irishman Sheeran are non-italian hitmen working for the Cosa nostra. Both are ruthless killers, aging men who tell the story of their lives. Both books are fascinating, but ÂI heard you paint Houses is the stronger book if you want to learn more about the inside story of the Mafia and especially about the events leading to the death of Jimmy Hoffa. I thought R.J. Ellory's epilogue was very apropos. In it, Perez remorselessly tells of a particular vicious and unfair murder he was a part of. While we may feel empathy at times for hitmen like this Mr.

A cracking good reada solid, suspenseful, swiftly-paced story. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
    Members Reviews:
An okay story about a murder, but only okay - a long step down from his best.
This book, like the last book I read in the series ('Snow White And Rose Red'), didnât seem up to McBainâs usual standards.
It was an okay story about murder, but only okay. It didnât have the sparkle that most McBain novels have. Even the long narratives that he normally writes so well are flat here.
Morris Bloom, Matthew Hopeâs best friend comes across as long-winded â far different from the character I remember from books in this series I read years ago. And one character was a caricature of a small town southern lawyer. McBain is normally so much better than that.
I donât know if McBainâs heart wasnât in this series at this point or if he just hadnât found his stride with the characters yet, but if I hadnât read the later books in the series before reading this one, I wouldnât have read them.
    Four Stars
I enjoy all of Mr. McBain's creations. Taken too soon.
    Cattle Country Murders
Sometimes a simple real estate deal can turn bad, and this one led to murder. But with many twists along the way. Interesting, but not as involved as the 87th precinct.
    Five Stars
    Great book.
I liked this series years ago
It feels dated, now, and Hope can be stupid. In this one, here ally made some silly moves and lost all credibility.

    Above-Average Detective Story
If you like your detective fiction hard-boiled, you might want to stick to McDonald, Hammett, Chandler and Cain, but if youâre willing to take a step into the world of medium-boiled detectives, than youâll probably like Wall of Glass, the first of the Joshua Croft series by Walter Satterthwait.
Joshua Croft is an associate of the Mondragon Detective Agency, run by Rita Mondragon. In what is a shift from the more macho hard-boiled detective fiction is that in this novel, the brain of the operation is a woman: a very savvy, smart woman. Sadly, we donât get to see much of Rita in this first installment. The story, in traditional detective style, is told in first person, through the eyes of Joshua Croft, the brawn to Ritaâs brain. Heâs the one who runs all over Santa Fe, New Mexico tracking down suspects, getting shot at, beaten up, and has his Subaru chased down a slick, muddy mountain road. Rita is there to offer advice, and, in the end, is the one who actually solves the crime â one of them, any way.
The story revolves around a couple of different crimes: a jewelry theft, a murder, another murder, possible insurance fraud, selling cocaine, and one final murder. As the story moves quickly along, Joshua and Rita work to unravel the traditional tangled web, and to determine if all the crimes are connected (and if they were carried out by the same person).
Joshua Croft is the typical detective: flawed yet endearing, charming but sarcastic, brave but still slightly foolish. Heâs presumably handsome as the women flirt with him, though in contrast to many of the early hard-boiled detective novels, the women in Satterthwaitâs book arenât all bikini-clad seductresses. While there is a subplot involving some rather kinky sex (none of which is described in great detail), and one of the main female characters does try to seduce Joshua, the female characters are strong and not relegated to sexual objects. In fact, most of the characters in the story are quite realistically fleshed out. Even the minor players are given some dimension rather than just being cardboard cutouts standing at the bar.
Interestingly, the book, which was written in 1987 doesnât feel dated.

The crooked, the greedy, and those with a checkered past - they all came to Leadville with the same purpose: Get in, get rich, get out.
As 1879 draws to a close, silver fever burns hot in the Rocky Mountain boomtown of Leadville, Colorado. Unfortunately for Joe Rose, an assayer of precious metals, death stakes its own claim. Joes body is found trampled into the muck behind Inez Stannerts saloon.
Inez already has much more to deal with than pouring shots of Taos Lightning. A lady educated on the East Coast, she has a past that doesnt bear close scrutiny, due in part to her elopement with a gambling man who has recently disappeared. Most of the townsfolk, including Inezs business partner, Abe Jackson, dismiss Joes death as an accident. Death, after all, is no stranger in Leadville. But Inez wonders why this loving husband and father was carrying a brass token good for one free screw at the parlor house of Denver madam Mattie Silks.
When Joes widow Emma asks Inez to settle Joes affairs, Inez reluctantly agrees and soon uncovers skewed assays, bogus greenbacks, and blackmail, leading her to believe that Joe was murdered. Was he killed over money or for purely personal motives? Its up to Inez to find out.
Ann Parker, a science writer by day, is the author of the Silver Rush historical mystery series, of which Silver Lies was the winner of the Willa Cather Award for Historical Fiction and the Colorado Gold Award for Best Mystery.
    Critic Reviews:

Meet Inez Stannert, the poker-playing, straight-talking, gun-toting owner of the Silver Queen Saloon and the heroine of Parkers excellent debutDrawing on historic facts and figures of 1870s Colorado, Parker tells a gripping tale of love, greed, and murder in the Old West, with a cast of convincing, larger-than-life characters, including a brief appearance from Bat Masterson himself. Crime Loaded Mystery in Silver Rush of Colorado
This story is set in a mining town in Colorado during the 1870's. Filled with atmosphere and history of daily life in the post Civil War world of silver mines and money. So many twists and turns before it all becomes clear in this award winning first book in a series.
Kristen Potter read in such a silky smooth languid voice that at times I had trouble telling characters apart. Most of the time she just read the book with an occasional accent--probably for the best. Her voice had a mesmerizing quality.
Often while listening I thought that the character development was too minimal. Some characters became nothing more than names that were hard to place. In the end I thought this lack was part of the author's build up of intrigue and suspense--creating a feeling of not knowing what people were about. Not knowing who to trust, who the good guys were and who to watch out for.

    Publisher's Summary:
The welcome return of C. C. Benison's delectable series featuring Father Tom Christmas - "an irresistible addition to the ranks of clerical sleuths" (Julia Spencer-Fleming).
Father Tom Christmas, the recently widowed vicar adjusting to life in the English village of Thornford Regis, would do almost anything to avoid attending the annual Robert Burns Supper at the local hotel. But as chaplain to a traditional Scottish pipe band, Father Tom must deliver the grace - and contend with wailing bagpipes, whiskey-laced parishioners reciting poetry, and the culinary abomination that is haggis.
As snow falls to unprecedented depths, the revelers carry on - briefly interrupted by an enigmatic stranger seeking shelter. Then Will Moir, proprietor of the hotel and a dedicated piper, inexplicably goes missing - only to be found later in the hotel's dark tower, alone and dead from what appears to be a heart attack.
Father Tom's own heart sinks when he learns the actual cause of Will's demise. When word gets out, the flurry of innocent speculation descends into outlandish gossip. And, for all its tranquil charm, Thornford Regis has plenty to gossip about - illicit trysts, muted violence, private sorrows, and old, unresolved tragedies. The question is: Who would benefit most from the piper's death? Suspicion swirls around many, including Will's beautiful widow, their shadowy son, Will's obnoxious brother-in-law, and even the mysterious party crasher, who knows more than she lets on about the grudges she left behind - but never forgot.
Brimming with wit, full of genuine surprise, and featuring one of the most memorable (and unlikely) detectives in mystery fiction, C. C. Benison's second Father Christmas mystery will delight listeners with a puzzle that truly defies solution.

    Multi-layered, character-driven mystery
    Any additional comments?
This is a "village cozy" in the tradition of classic British mysteries. It is well written, with fully developed characters in a wide variety of personalities and tones. The plot is complex and even a touch bizarre, but all the dots connect at the end. I highly recommend this for people who enjoy Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers. The narrator is top notch.
    Fabulous winter mystery
If you could sum up Eleven Pipers Piping in three words, what would they be?
    Entertaining, atmospheric, engrossing
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Unlike other mysteries where someone dies (is killed) in the first ten pages, this author takes time to develop the surrounding characters (and eventual victim.) By the time the victim is killed, the listener/reader already has suspicions about what actually happened.
Have you listened to any of Steve West and Jean Gilpin s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No - but this one is great.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A snowed-in Rabbie Burns dinner in a quaint English village goes terribly wrong when a reveler is found dead in the hotel watchtower: heart attack or poison?
    Any additional comments?
I never read (or listened to) any works by this author before but I was looking for a UK-setting for a Christmas/winter mystery. So glad I stumbled upon this.

Too much going on and not alot of investigation. Three separate cases, but the solutions to two were as obvious as neon signs. The main case had a confession out of the blue that didnot match the evidence or crime scene.

    Complicated story
Sarah is caught in a museum mishap that keeps her and Max guessing who killed two guards and why. They use her crazy cousin to help them figure out if paintings were being replaced and if so, why. They hide and watch and go on searches while in disguise. This book has a great plot and interesting characters.
    Excellent!
This is the second book in the series. Start reading this series with "The Family Vault", and continue in order, if you can. The characters develop along the way. There is tragedy, comedy, adventure, and romance - what more could you want? Some of Sarah's uncles, as well as her butler and maid, are "a hoot and a half"! This series is one of several by Charlotte MacLeod, and I love her writing!
    heart-warming crime fiction
All the Charlotte MacLeod books are such fun to read and this is no exception. Real life? Maybe not but such a delightful world to immerse yourself in. Sarah and Max plus the various members of the Kelling clan make you long to meet them and I would loved to have stayed at Sarah's boarding house. The values the main characters portray, and indeed live by, are heart warming. The denouement in this particular book is hilarious. Definitely a book for curling up with under grey skies (emotional or in the skies).
    Art Museum to Die For
THE PALACE GUARD is the third in the Sarah Kelling and Max Bittershon series by Charlotte Macleod. Add a few more of Sarah's hilarious cousins to the mix and murder is fun.
Sarah and Max attend a concert at the Wilkins Museum and while resting their ears from a well-meaning recital on a balcony, a body falls from the 3rd floor to the courtyard below them. Is the guard's death an accident while taking a leak in a famous fountain or murder.
A second murder leads the landlady and her tenant on a infamous chase of a thief who has stripped the museum of 30 of its masterpieces and substituted excellent copies in their place.
Sarah's cousin Brooks Kelling finds the love of his life in Sarah's boarding house and helps the duo solve the crime.
This one has all the wit and verve you'd expect from Charlotte Macleod.

Charlotte MacLeod was such a wonderful author. Naturally, I found my missing copy of the book before this copy arrived.
