An incidental week long hiatus resulted from discussing the french zombie film "La Horde". A group of rogue police officers hell bent on exacting revenge for the death of a fellow officer form an unlikely partnership with criminals they intended to kill after the zombie apocalypse breaks out during the siege. Proving that fear or lack thereof transcends cultural barriers "La Horde" introduces every character and situation you would expect to find in an American zombie film but with the added bonus of having to read subtitles. Though competently made, this film suffers from similar pitfalls to it's international counterparts as it retreads ground well worn by numerous and arguably better films before it. If you've seen a zombie movie within the last decade then it will be impossible for us to spoil it for you.

This week we travel back to the era of sweater vests and white privilege to discuss the 1958 classic "The Fly". After Andre Delambre is heinously murdered by his wife the police give her a week or so to calm down before demanding the truth. What they hear is an unbelievable tale of science fiction and horror as she describes the chain of events leading up to his untimely demise. As Mad scientists do Andre, (after vaporizing the family cat) sets his sight on using teleportation to transport a human subject. His plans are foiled when a fly enters the machine during a live trial combining their DNA and transforming Andre into a horrible monstrosity. Be prepared for horror!! Be amazed by the stunning visual effects!! See the whitest family known to man frolic together to a soundtrack ripped straight from the set of "Leave it to Beaver"!! Or just listen to us struggle to delineate Vincent Price from Peter O'Toole and say to hell with the spoilers...you like the shirtless Goldblum version better anyhow.

Taking inspiration from enumerable 80's monster flicks, our film this week is "Nightbreed: The Director's Cut". Aaron Boone is your average 80's horror movie protagonist; feathered hair...leather jacket...you get it. When he's not walking around shirtless Boone has dreams of a fictional monster world called "Midian". Convinced his dreams have somehow transformed him into a serial killer Boone goes in search of "Midian" to live amongst the monsters. Part monster movie, part slasher flick where this film excels it makes you miss the practical movie effects and overall feel of 1980's monster movies. Where it falls flat, you have a story with too many themes and subplots, cliche characters and comedy relief that's neither effective or necessary. Full story spoilers, but story isn't what you should judge this film on.

Exuberant over actor Nicolas Cage stars in this remake of a 1973 classic of the same name. Edward Malus is placed on leave after witnessing a horrific traffic accident that presumably leaves two dead. Malus is then commissioned by his former fiance to put his highway patrol detecting skills to work to find her missing daughter on an isolated island of twisted feminists. What next ensues is responsible for...I'm going to say about 1/3rd of all Nicolas Cage meme's including such classics as "Not the bees!!" and "How'd it get burned?!". If you would like to see a man in a Bear costume kicking Leelee Sobieski into a wall or would just like to watch Nicolas Cage freaking out then watch the last 15 minutes of this film. Everyone else check out the podcast and revel in the sea of memes later.

Our month of horror continues with a film about the terrors of Hollywood, Starry Eyes. Aspiring actress Sarah has a terrible job, serious emotional issues and awful friends. Things begin to turn around however when she auditions for a role in an upcoming horror picture and receives a callback after the casting agents witness her bizarre mental breakdown. The auditions begin to take a more sinister turn as Sarah learns just how far she will go to be famous. With some really spectacular gore and decent performances all around we were happy to be able to once again discuss a good film. This is one we highly recommend watching first as we delve into spoilers right away!

We decided to celebrate the month of October with all horror movies and Dead Silence is certainly horrific...in a manner of speaking. The town of Ravens Fair has long been haunted by the shadow of former resident and ventriloquist Marie Shaw. Long thought buried with all of her dummies one mysteriously arrives at the door of Jamie Ashen, whose wife's death is the inception of this film's horrible plot. Several other characters exist as a reminder that there's supposed to be a murderous and supernatural evil behind all of it. The truth is far less thrilling however and the plot devolves into the base notion that dolls = scary. There's a crazy lady with a stuffed bird, a cop who can't stop shaving and a lot of plot points so bad you'd be reluctant to call them cliche. This podcast might be the most entertaining way to experience this story but obviously if you haven't seen it we reveal the whole shitty tale.

Our film this week is a sequel to the now 23 year old movie Hard Target. MMA hero Wes Bentley becomes an underground fighter in Bangkok after beating his best friend into a body bag during a title fight. Overcome with grief and a shack full of pigeon shit Wes is offered the opportunity to partake in a fight with a million dollar payday. After being flown to the jungle of Burma and introduced to a group of requisite survival movie stereotypes Wes learns that his next "fight" is going to be a fight for his life. Featuring all of the obnoxious action movie tropes you've come to expect and a cast fit for a straight to video sequel!! If you're new to this rodeo be advised....the bull's milk is sour (full spoilers...also....bull's don't make milk).

Back to form this week as we present another Streaming Pile which comes in the form of "Jaws The Revenge". This notoriously panned entry into the the Jaws franchise centers around the Brody family as they struggle to thwart the murderous intentions of a shark who has marked their family for death. Vicious murder, bloody dismemberment, brutal decapitations...are nowhere to be found as we are instead forced to watch Senior Citizens fall in love, Biologists collect sea shells and flashbacks of more exciting moments in previous Jaws movies. It all culminates in an epic showdown between father and daughter as they engage in a ruthless battle of stupid, contorted faces. If this sounds like your idea of excitement then tighten the chin straps on your helmet because "This time, it's personal".

Our film this week is the coming of age story "Dope". Three loser friends obsessed with 90's hip-hop have a tough time navigating life in Inglewood until a chance encounter with a neighborhood drug dealer changes everything. A birthday party turned night club shootout sees protagonist Malcolm and his friends Jib and Diggy placed in a precarious position and tests their will to rise to a new challenge. This film prompted a great discussion about 90's hip-hop, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas and Wes Anderson. As always we thoroughly spoil the film so if you've already seen the film or don't care...press play now.

We all needed a Palate Cleanser following last week's atrocity which came in the form of "The Voices". Likable weirdo and matricidal schizophrenic Jerry has an apartment full of talking pets and a date with the office hottie. The night doesn't go as planned however when Jerry is stood up and sort of...accidentally commits a horrific murder. At least Mr. Whiskers (the cat) is on hand to give Jerry some pointers on disposing of the body. Deciding Jerry is a natural Mr. Whiskers (aided by the severed head in Jerry's fridge) does his best to convince Jerry that serial murder might just be what his life is missing. Spoiler warning: Forrest Gump gets shot in the Buttocks.
