Wall: History Sluiswijk and the biscuit factory

Sluiswijk is not named after a lock, but after Biscuit Factory Sluis, and it’s a great story everyone should know, which is why street artist Shortlife guides you through the history of this place, using his illustrative style to revive the old biscuit factory. Based on old camera footage, he brings typical factory elements back into the streetscape such as: the large chimney with the company name, the sloping factory roofs, and the name that used to appear in large letters on the roof. In the spirit of yesteryear, a female factory employee smiles at you, with a biscuit in her hand, as the treats are being distributed across the country with the Sluis transport truck. The eagle was watching and saw that it was good.

About the Walls and Neighbours project

Local residents of Sluiswijk knocked on Rentree housing association's door in 2020. The bright white painted walls in the neighbourhood were not particularly attractive to them. The neighbours had a much better idea for those walls: street art! Rentree approached Street Art Streets, the collective for street art in Deventer, and together with the neighbourhood, Kunstcircuit, Kunstenlab and Voor Elkaar-Teams , they developed the amazing street art project: 'Walls and Neighbours'.

Stichting de Tijdmachine (The Time Machine Nonprofit)  travelled around the neighbourhood to collect and organise neighbourhood stories into various themes -from heroes to animals and from history to city pride. These themes were then translated into murals by nationally and internationally renowned street artists.

The murals can be seen around the Gooijerstraat in Deventer. From there, you can easily walk from artwork to artwork. Want to know more about this project and other street art murals in Deventer? Then visit:  streetartstreets.nl.

The name, Sluiswijk does not refer to a lock (sluis in Dutch) but to a local biscuit factory, Sluis, that was previously located in this neighbourhood.  The artists have all included a biscuit or cookie somewhere in their murals.  Can you find them?  Give it a try!

This mural by painting collective De Strakke Hand pays tribute to Deventer's rich market past. In the Middle Ages, five annual markets took place in the city, sometimes lasting up to two weeks. Merchants from home and abroad offered their wares and the famous stockfish and Deventer Spiced Cake were traded in large numbers.  Well, usually traded... this mischievous boy cannot hold back and, despite his mother's stern gaze, takes a few big bites of that delicious spiced cake.

As the Bergkwartier (Berg Quarter) and Bergkerk (Berg Church) shine in the background, a red and yellow football scarf suddenly catches the eye; a subtle nod to the present. And do the faces look familiar to you? They just might. After all, you might just run into the woman and boy in the painting today in Deventer.

Hanseatic cities cycling route

De Strakke Hand creates murals in a dozen Hanseatic (merchant trading) cities as part of the Hanseatic Cities Cycle Route of #discoverhansa. The municipality of Voorst was looking for a creative way to make the cycle tunnel near Twello blend into its surroundings. They were looking for a design with colour, space for nature, and a connection to the history of this place. Because this municipality is special. Voorst is the green oasis between three (medium-sized) cities. This spot once formed the natural border between all these areas. After all, the river IJssel flowed here for centuries. It is now no more than a ditch, but this 'Oude IJssel' is still the official border between the Gelderland and Overijssel provinces, which inspired Deventer artist Margot Olde Loohuis to create the mural 'underwater world'. With this mural, Margot takes you underwater in the old IJssel River. Cycle under the water's surface, see the waterlilies and enjoy this innovative perspective, the alienation and wonder it creates. An ode to the place, the history and the water that brought so much to this area.

Entrepreneurship, growth, crisis, war and casualties: this area has been through everything over the past few centuries. What began with the oil and hulling mills of Noury and van der Lande in 1838 grew into an area full of energy, innovation and renewal now known as S/park. Artist Johan Moorman has brought this eventful history together in his colourful mural.

Johan Moorman finds inspiration in retro-futuristic images, architecture, music and technological innovation. With his distinctive illustrative style, he leads the viewer from the Noury and van der Lande windmills and the historic building known as the “The Three Herrings” to the chemistry of AkzoNobel (now Nouryon) and further through the open doors of the innovation incubator S/park: a place for start-ups, students and researchers.

The mural is a colourful illustration of the chemistry happening at the Zutphenseweg.  It’s a chemistry between people, where different groups are connected, and innovative minds work together on chemical and technological innovations that prepare us for the future. The mural lets us see that exciting and interesting things are happening at S/park, while, at the same time, the safety of people and the environment always comes first. The mural was made possible by a gift in connection with the 50th anniversary of the Wesselings-Van Breemen Foundation.

Deventer would not have become the city it is today without the cooperative power of the Hanseatic League. To bring this message creatively to young people, artist Hedy Tjin designed this "Wake Up Wall". In total, the artist created four of these murals for the new Canon of the Netherlands.

The text on the mural reads ‘Wij vermenigvuldigt de kracht van ik’ which translates to 'We multiply the power of I', a testament to the former Hanseatic League, a commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and market towns in Northern Europe. The painting also shows a cog ship being loaded or unloaded by two people carrying bags and barrels, with a cityscape in the background.

The Canon of the Netherlands introduces young people to the history of our country from different perspectives. With creative street art, young people are encouraged to think about and discuss the significance of our history. Hedy Tjin incorporated the Hanseatic history into a colourful artwork with empowering statements that help young people realize they are in charge of their own future. Lessons from the past serve as wake-up calls for the present. The four wake-up murals in honour of the Canon of the Netherlands can be seen in Deventer, Amsterdam, Groningen and Nijmegen.

This halftone portrait by Egbert.EGD is an ode to a pioneer, a man who fought against the tide for an industrial area in the Havenkwartier (harbour quarter).  He became a catalyst for the Deventer economy and the namesake of this street: Mr. H.F. de Boer.

De Boer was an alderman at a time when Deventer was a fairly poor city. Every penny counted and not everyone saw the need for creating an industrial area. It was H.F. de Boer, in particular, who fought for the realisation of the port facilities. His idea was that the government should invest in the necessary infrastructure, and entrepreneurs should build for their own use. It turned out to be a move that would greatly improve the city’s industriousness.

The spirit of De Boer still lives on in the harbour area. Since 2012, it has once again been given a new lease of life, now boasting a hip and gritty area for creative entrepreneurs and residents. Once again, the government has invested in the infrastructure, and entrepreneurs and residents  have (re)built for their own use.

Thanks to Egbert.EGD the former alderman looks onto the area with satisfaction. The viewer, however, may have to look twice. Up close, the mural seems to be a play of lines because of the half tone effect. But if you take a photo or a step back, the pieces will fall into place.

Artist: GOMAD (Marcus Debie)

Artist GOMAD used the passage to the Adwaita courtyard as a canvas for this unique mural. The namesake of the courtyard, the poet Adwaita, is the focal point. He is surrounded by flora and fauna, a nod to Brahmanism, an Indian philosophy from which Adwaita drew inspiration for his poems.

GOMAD held onto his unique style, in which eyes, plants, animals and organic colour forms play an important role, but also crawled into Adwaita's head. He delved into a text about the Hindu God Brahmâ, who, as the story goes, created a woman, with whom he himself fell in love. She tried to escape his lovestruck stares, but each time Brahmâ grew another head so he could keep looking at her.

GOMAD draws the viewer into the story with piercing eyes looking anxiously at the courtyard. What else is there to see?  Come take a look for yourself. Once inside the courtyard, the portrait of J. Dèr Mouw (Adwaita) will gaze upon you with a look of satisfaction.

This mural was created in March 2020 at a time when everything seemed to stand still.  Homebound residents saw a work of art coming alive right in front of them.  It has given a bright spot for the residents, a more beautiful entrance to the Adwaita courtyard and positive energy for the city.

Project: #SAS1250 / Deventer 1250 Street

The 1250th anniversary of Deventer in 2018 was an excellent opportunity to be inspired by our city’s past, present and future, which is exactly what Rotterdam illustrator and street artist Joren Joshua achieved with this mural.

The artist tells the story of this unique location in the Sluiskwartier, a former millworks that in the 19th century sat at the corner of the former city moat and the inner harbour, which has since been filled in. This location, where the lock was located, formed an important gateway. Next door the Raambuurt emerged as one of Deventer's first industrial areas.

Joren Joshua hopes you will see what you want to in his work. For one person, it might be an homage to our past as a port city with two docker workers busy carrying freight. The other may see the imprint of industry and workers in an old steamship and a red cogwheel. And the observant viewer will recognize the colours that perfectly suit Deventer and its birthday -the red and white of Deventer's coat of arms and, of course,  red and yellow, the colours of our jewel, the football club - Go Ahead Eagles.
