In today’s episode we go over a question we received from a listener. They asked us “What do you think about intermittent fasting?” Fasting has been around for a very long time and was usually centered around a religious activity. Anytime the body is told that it can’t do or have something it becomes obsessed with finding a way to do, or get, that thing. Digestion is a muscular practice, if we don’t use those muscles, they will become sluggish and will slow down on doing digestive processes. One of the big functions of our digestive systems is to produce blood and other substances that are important for your blood. So, limiting digestion also is limiting the body from getting something that it 100% needs. 

The human body is not perfect, it’s full of things that go wrong. We don’t believe in fad diets and always stress giving your body all the nutrients/water/fats that it needs to thrive.

We are Finishing off our “custom fit suit” series with today’s episode. The purpose of this series is to advocate for our children and utilize the wisdom of other parents to be able to help us discover the gifts and talents our kids have and how to help them utilize those gifts.

Today we are going to talk about the need of taming our passions and why it is so important. We need to be a good role model to our children when it comes to having a reasonable response to dealing with emotions, and returning our bodies to rest and digest. How we choose to parent our children determines how they will handle these emotions throughout their lives. It’s important to have respectful conversation in your household even if it leads to a disagreement. Lori, Laura, and Bob share their wisdom in this episode on how to have these conversations especially when they are in front of your children.  

Forgiveness is not a feeling; it is a choice. The sooner a child can understand this choice/passion will help them better understand conflict. Set time aside each month with your spouse to talk about your children and speak about their strengths and weaknesses. Make a plan to help them work on themselves.

Welcome back! We are continuing our “custom fit suit” series with today’s episode. The purpose of this series is to advocate for our children and utilize the wisdom of other parents to be able to help us discover the gifts and talents our kids have and how to help them utilize those gifts.

Today we are going over children’s mechanical brain functions and development. A very important concept is understanding how a child accepts discipline. How well they can handle and process the consequences to bad behavior is a great signal for mental maturity. It is normal for humans to cry and be upset when something has happened to us. There also needs to be a concrete understanding that after we do something wrong there will be a punishment or consequence and then accept it and learn from it. 

Laura and Bob both share a lot of wisdom they learned through experience or through mentorship on how to understand children’s emotions and different ways to deal with it. As the adult in the relationship, we also need some training and reflection on how we handle our emotions. We have to parent our children and cannot let their emotional outbursts sabotage our emotions. We must learn and grow in the parent role.

 Today we start a new series to really help you ask some questions about your children over the summer. We are calling this our custom fit suit series. Lori is very passionate about the concept of apprenticeship for your children. It’s best to begin by thinking backwards…  What do we want our adult children to look like? Their work ethic, how they interact with their community, etc.

Our education system has failed our children for too long. When we graduate from high school we leave with very little real-life experience. The apprenticeship model is designed to be more hands on to allow our children pick up needed life skills. This helps them when they enter the adult world be prepared to work, understand time management, be respectful, and appreciate their work. The apprenticeship model is the responsibility of the parents to find the right help for their children. 

Bob shares his experience as a father of 3 kids who have just gone through our education system and what he learned in the process.

It’s so important to develop healthy sleep habits from a young age. Not learning good sleep habits as a child can literally mess up your sleep for the rest of your life. Preparing for sleep is an important wind down process in the evening. This includes not doing things that are energizing or giving your mind too much input. Including cell phone usage or any type of information input going into your brain. You don’t want your body to have to spend all night trying to problem solve vs going into REM sleep.

 Our brain wants us to stay up and stay stimulated. When we enter into REM sleep it doesn’t receive the same levels of glucose that it does when it isn’t in deep sleep so it is fighting to keep that supply level high. Not getting enough sleep will make you less productive throughout the day and increase the chance of making wrong decisions.

 Children rarely let their bodies just rest without stimulation. It is the parents responsibility to train them to have a good wind down and sleep routine. Don’t start a routine with your kids that you don’t want to keep. In example Bob had a friend whose kids “would only fall asleep by driving around the block.” But that routine is not sustainable and it is a bad habit. Today we go over some tips on how to start a healthier sleep routine for your kids.

Today is a continuation of last episodes topic of what is healthy exercise. 

 In society today a lot of us like to join groups to apply some competition and community to our fitness journey. An example of this is camp gladiator. Lori goes over the impact things like this have on women’s bodies. The main issue with these programs is they only offer one side of the homeostasis equation. After a lot of Aerobic exercise, it is important to do Anerobic exercises to bring your body back into homeostasis.

 Lori gives some examples of aerobic and anerobic exercises to help our listeners be able to understand both. Lori’s Stretch 4 Life course has a section called Stretch 4 Sports that has guided videos of stretches and exercises that will help you get your body back to homeostasis.  Have you ever noticed when you injure a part of your body it’s hot and swollen? That means you have an infection and uric acid. We need to do something to drain these away. That’s why it’s important to make sure your body is back in homeostasis to rebalance. Skin is the key here!

Today is sort of a controversial episode. Lori goes over what our body needs for healthy exercise vs what society (the fitness industry) tells us is a healthy exercise to be “skinny and beautiful”. Your body views almost every activity as repetitive and if it feels it as repetitive it will quit and preform what Lori calls the “muscle shuffle”. During this shuffle your body goes from the primary movers (bigger more endurance muscles) to a secondary set of muscles which are more of a twitch type of muscle that adds in strength when you need it then quits.

 Injuries occur more often when these secondary muscles step in for repetitive muscle activities. An example of these are sit ups. Sit ups can cause us to herniate some part of the abdominal muscles and can also hurt the neck. Following the fitness industry that dominates our culture doesn’t understand how to properly exercise the body the way it needs. We need to understand the movements that are beneficial to our bodies and what aren’t.

Find exercises that you find fun! If your brain is telling your body that this is fun you will have those primary muscles showing up to work for you. Some examples are dancing, ping pong, skiing, ice skating, and anything physical you find fun that involves shuffled movements!

Lori is adamant about stretching. You have to stretch! If you do not stretch, you will not correct your posture and your posture will hinder your body’s ability to make blood. While sitting, you are lessening your body’s ability to make blood. One example is travel. Why is traveling so exhausting when most of the time we are either sitting in an airplane or a car? Our bodies need to stand and move around to keep itself hydrated. Lori developed an entire course to help teach how to properly stretch to help the body correct posture. Link down below.

 Lori goes over the science of why you should not make a habit of crossing your legs while sitting. Walking is an important function for our body to help it eliminate lymphatic waste.
