  • Strung Out Episode 178: PART TWO. INTERVIEW WITH KENNY PHEASANT

    Send us Fan Mail

Anishinaabemowin, the language of the Anishinaabe nation, is one of the oldest and most historically important Native American languages in North America.  It is the native toungue of the Great Lakes Region of North America.
But it is in danger of becoming extinct if not passed on to a new generation. In earlier times, the language was passed on orally from a tribe’s elders to its younger members, but in more recent times, this practice has fallen victim to outside influences.
The word Anishinaabe translated means a good person.
And Kenny Pheasant is a good person, who has been working hard to preserve Anishinaabemowin. Kenny has approached the preservation and proliferation of the language by skillfully using modern social media to help bring it to not only native listeners but to non-native people who are interested in learning the language. His website and YouTube videos has brought together people of all cultures and has also brought new attention on Anishinaabemowin. You can learn about the language camp that has been established so people can meet, camp and practice speaking the language that has been held every summer. The camp combines eco-activism as well as learning to master the Anishinaabemowin.

  • Strung Out Episode 175: PHILOSOPHY OF ART. PART TWO INTERVIEW WITH REBECCA JASSO ON ART

    Send us Fan Mail

Part one of our series with Rebecca Jasso explored her music.  This part is about her passion as a visual artist.  Rebecca uses computer-generated watercolor programs to help illustrate an eclectic variety of art: from musical posters to work on children's books.   The result of such computer-generated watercolors is a piece of art that is almost indistinguishable from conventional watercolor.  The implications are amazing for those who wish to pursue art in all its forms.   Rebecca describes what motivates her to explore her visual artist side and has sound advice for aspiring visual artists everywhere.  Listen in!

  • Strung Out Episode 174: WHAT COULD BE SCARIER THAN HALLOWEEN?

    Send us Fan Mail

Halloween comes to us this year with a world that is far scarier than anything that can be conjured up on October 31.   Martin looks at what is happening between the State of Israel and the Hamas Extremists and draws a correlation between that, the recent mass slaughter of people in Lewiston, Maine and the upcoming election cycle in the US.   The common thread is of narrow interests versus that of the innocent and many.  In each of these situations  what to do is matter of what is morally right, even when financial, theocratic and extreme interests are working hard to block and obfuscate such a direction.   Let's make the world safe for Halloween again.

Next week we return with Rebecca Jasso and her discussion about Art.

  • Strung Out Episode 173. PHILOSOPHY OF ART. SINGER-SONGWRITER-ARTIST REBECCA JASSO ON HER MUSIC.

    Send us Fan Mail

Chicago native Rebecca Jasso is a singer/songwriter who playfully writes around the themes of love, loneliness, and fantasy, skillfully weaving her melodies into the harmonic fabric of her fingerstyle guitar playing.

Music has had a strong hold over Rebecca since childhood. At age 10, she took up the guitar, and since the very beginning, sought to write good songs. Despite learning at this young age, it wasn’t till after college that she worked up the confidence to take her music to the stage. For years, she oscillated between playing solo and in bands, with each wave bringing her closer to chiseling out a style that would be her very own.

A visual artist, Rebecca conjures images with her lyrics to insert you into pictures from her own imagination. From soft, autumnal landscapes, to dark, Narnian scenes, each song is a journey into a new story. Her honest voice and beautiful songs will absolutely charm you.

  • Strung Out Episode 172. THE PHILOSOPHY OF ART SERIES: AN INTERVIEW WITH SINGER-SONGWRITER RACHEL DREW.

    Send us Fan Mail

Rachel Drew grew up the daughter of folk-musician-sweethearts, who met in 1972.  They played the old venues such as No Exit in Chicago's Roger's Park neighborhood.  As a kid, she knew she had the music within her, her mind spinning melodies of her making and lyrics to boot.  Finally, Drew took that step into the world of singer-songwriting, taking up where her parents left off.
One-on-one, Drew and her guitar create an image of a great singer-songwriter.  Her lyrics thoughtful, wistful and full of imagery.   Her voice is pure and emotive.  The guitar, simple and supportive.   But this is only one side of her.  Backed by some well-known Chicago musicians, the Rachel Drew Band reveals that other side, one in which Drew can hold her own with such contemporaries as Anna Fermin and Neko Case.   There's that certain Chicago-Americana sound in the band.  Where pop sensibility meets the edgy Americana established by such bands and artists as Wilco and Langford.   The razzle-dazzle as straightforward as a no-nonsense Chicago red hot from Super Dawg.
Drew is the ringmaster of this band, and her interview reveals her thoughtfulness on lyrics, motherhood, the music business and making soup.

  • Strung Out Episode 171: PART TWO. INTERVIEW WITH MOVIE MAKER AND ARTIST DAVID ROCCO FACCHINI.

    Send us Fan Mail

David Rocco Facchini is an artist's artist.  He's at once a visual artist, making amazing sculptures out of found objects, such as bits of old movie equipment, he's a storyteller, a stop motion movie maker whose most recent film was featured at the Cannes Film Festival, and also an adventurer of sorts.  He recently set out in a Sprinter Van to explore the psyche of America.  The result is a new film, USA2Z, which is in the final stages of production.   Facchini has a fun website with a lot of examples of his film and art and interviews.  Check out www.dellaroccostudios.com.

This episode continues to delve into the complexities regarding community.  As Facchini did his social experiment of word association, he became aware of how people percieve themselves.  That community, government, religion and other social gatherings are somewhat skewed in this era of sound bites, social media, talking points and anger.  People seem desperate to hold onto something as their very sense of self is under attack from variety of sources, all intent on making that self, theirs.  Tune in to a wonderful insight to the state our human condition--now.
