It is no secret that the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago is home to a lot of artists.  Musicians, painters, sculptors, theater companies and the people who make them happen.  So it is not surprising that Nicholas Barron has an art studio just this side south of the Evanston border.  In this 2 part series, we meet Barron the musician.  His unique fingerpicking style, accompanied by percussive hits on the guitar and even the beat-box style of early rap artists creates a textured, full sound.  This is rounded out by an extremely versatile voice--warm at times and full throated New Orleans shout at other times.  Watching him perform his well crafted lyrics is a show.   No small wonder that James Taylor tapped him in the New York Times as a musician to watch.  For all his talent, he has the artist passion that goes with it.  He started a campaign back in the '80's to protect the rights of street performers in Chicago.  The fact that many artists can make a living performing legally on Chicago streets can be traced back to Barron's efforts.   He is a complex, humble and engaging musician.   Part 2 will take us into the visual art world of Nicholas Barron, one that he inherited from his parents, both successful artists themselves.

It was a hot week in Chicago and yet, Chicago was tepid compared to the rest of the news from other parts, which really were burning!  From the Fulton County Jail to landing a rover on the south pole of the moon.  There were assassinations, insinuations, and altercations this past week that came fast and furious.  Listen in for the expert take on the current events with Sandeep Gopal and Martin McCormack.

Martin spent a week over in Ireland on tour and shares some of the conversations he had with people from Northern Ireland, particularly the town of Enniskillen in County Fermanagh.  Change is slowly happening in Ireland and the day of an united Ireland is not that far-fetched or far-off.   Listen to the reasons given and you may be surprised.

Jenny Bienemann is a powerhouse.  She works at fundraising for the Music Institute of Chicago, a job that requires a great deal of patience, communication and passion.  She is a mother; she is wife to fellow singer-songwriter Robin Bienemann.  She gives songwriting workshops.  She publishes haiku poetry and has sessions in which artist carve songs from the haiku she creates.   She has helped struggling songwriters get in touch with the muse, which from her songs, seems like they are on a name to name basis.  She is poised, elegant, witty and serious at the same time.  And, she manages two websites: www. jennybienemann.com and www.haikumilieu.com.  Oh, she also is an artist and has a weekly newsletter.  No moss grows under this rock.  Enjoy meeting and hearing the wisdom of Chicago singer-songwriter Jenny Bienemann.

Softspoken, funny, a natural storyteller.  Those are the first words that come to mind when talking to Ron Lazzeretti.  But he is a hard-working songwriter, crafting lyrics and biting down on each word to see if has gold, or fool's gold.  Ron Lazzeretti is an artist. And like so many singer-songwriters around Chicago, feeds that habit by working "side gigs." He is a filmmaker, an advertising executive, a writer.  His movies have been directed by such notables as Michael Keaton.   But, to draw those accomplishments out is something that takes a bit of coaxing.  Lazzeretti is also one of these rare humans that treasures the now of making music.  He recalls situations and people with such joy that one can visualize each experience as a well-thumbed and worn leather bound book.  Lovingly pulled from the shelf and read again for the pure pleasure of it.   Check out some of his work at his website or see and hear the upcoming tracks of his album coming out in September of 2023, Fat Head Sunday Paper on his YouTube channel.
